Hello and welcome to Autoline Daily. I’m Christie Schweinsberg from WardsAuto filling in for John who is out in California for the LA Auto Show. But now let’s look at today’s top stories.

Hyundai is using social media techniques to keeps its dealers on their toes. In other words, you can friend them or flame them. They call it Hyundai Reviews. It allows Hyundai owners to rate their dealership experience when it comes to servicing their cars. Every single review gets publicly posted on Hyundai’s website and the dealer’s website, where other owners and dealers can read them. If an owner complains about his dealer, that dealer then gets a chance to rectify the situation, and then the owner is asked to re-score their experience. To prevent competitors or trolls from posting nasty reviews, and to prevent the dealers from posting fake glowing reviews about themselves, Hyundai verifies that the person posting is indeed a legitimate customer. So far 435 Hyundai dealers, or about 63% of all of them, have signed up to participate in the program. And 373 of them have an active Hyundai Review page.

As you know the European car market is going through a slump but for the second consecutive month sales were up in the region. That’s the first time that’s happened in two years. Sales in October hit just over a million units, a gain of close to 5% compared to last year. Overall sales in Europe are down about 3% through the first ten months of the year.

Daimler and its Chinese partner BAIC just strengthened their tie-up. The Chinese government just gave the green light for the German automaker to take a 12% stake in BAIC for about $845 million dollars. The move will help Daimler better compete with BMW and Audi in the market. The deal also opens up the door for BAIC to launch an IPO in the near future.

Honda just introduced three new VTEC Turbo engines for its global line-up, a 1.0 liter 3-cylinder, a 1.5 liter 4-cylinder and a 2.0 liter four-cylinder. All three are gasoline engines that feature direct-injection and variable valve motion technology. The first engine to come out will be the 2.0 liter which will debut in Europe to power the Civic Type R.

Back in July we gave you a look at where MINI’s design direction is heading, and now the brand is showing off the 2015 Cooper Hardtop. Despite being longer, wider and taller than the previous model, the new one is unmistakably a MINI Cooper, but does get a massaged front and rear fascia. For the American market it’s available with two new engines, a turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that cranks out 134 horsepower and a 189 horsepower turbo 4 that will go into the Cooper S. It’s also available with a 3-cylinder diesel for other markets. The interior got massaged as well. The instrument cluster on the steering column will now show road speed, engine speed and fuel level, the center stake gets a standard TFT display or an optional 8.8 inch unit and the power window switches have also been moved from the center stake to the door panels. No word on pricing for the American market just yet, but it starts out in Europe at nearly 18,000 euros or a little over $24,000. The 2015 MINI Cooper hits the market in March of 2014.

    On the cost of the 2015 Mini Cooper, 18,000 euros is not $13,000. More like $24,000.

    The CTS styling looks much better than what I have seen on the road. The rear-end seemed to be the largest area that still needs improvement.

    The profile of the midsection looks a lot like Gen1 Acura TSX, a car I really like.

    I have always disliked the taillight/brake light and turn signal being integrated in a single red lens. Cadillac has done this for what seems to be decades-too me. It is cheap and a cost saving measure.

    Even my inexpensive, eco, compact, bare bones, vanilla, appliance like Yaris has a separate yellow turn signal. Heck even the Sportswagen does?!?! Maybe that is my sole requirement for choosing a car. :P

    The CTS is the epitome of pastiche design with a complete disregard for the driver as well as for those condemned to look at one as it ‘ drives ‘ down the road

    John: I would ask Hyundai about truck plans. If they build it they will come. A true compact truck that can seat four adults. With the chicken tax I know they’ll have to sell it real cheap or make it in the USA.

    Hate to be the bearer of bad news but in fact the ONLY thing Hyundai’s HQ will be paying attention to is the bottom line

    e.g. If Dealer X is selling cars by the container full .. all while getting slagged left and right by the majority of their customers online Hyundai will not care one tiny bit .

    Whereas …Conversely .. if Dealer Y’s getting ‘ friended ‘ by 90% of their customers … AND their family and friends … yet barely making quota … rest assured Hyundai HQ’ll be all over Dealer Y’s case like stink on ______

    Social Media can be best defined as an entity which gives the illusion of control and the perception that ones opinions actually matter in the grand scheme of things when in reality its the Bottom Line and the bottom line only that matters in the slightest ;-)

Posting online would be the moral equivalent of running around in my underwear and squirting my water pistol. So how does this concern SJ? Smartphones will be the primary way most people around the world connect to the net. Will H/K also tell posters’ cyber buddies how they rated their dealer experience? That may have some weight.

    Since Cadillac used to be primarily owned by drivers with far more years on them, I spent a lot of time staring at those single lens tail/brake/turn assemblies.

    Yea, VW was wanting to catch me during the buyers euphoria, just before the buyer’s remorse sets.

    Cadillac still has a ways to go before it can measure up to the quality control standards to the Lexus models. Body panel dimensions,fit and finish, paint quality, etc…

    Great Job Mini, now you have all but lost the European appeal and become a bloated, ungainly Americanized car. Need a place in the dash for a iPad and loose the silly looking infotainment thingy

    Amber turn signals are required in much of the rest of the world, but not in the U.S. They complicate trailer wiring, if you put a hitch on a car, but simplify the electrical system of the car, by having turn signal bulbs, and required switching separate from the brake lights. I guess I like them, but don’t really care, one way or the other.

    And Yaris is a world car, after all plus I don’t think many people are gonna ba hauling anything with a Yaris. BTW it has much better resale value than Corolla does.

    I’m surprised you never heard back regarding the FR-S. Two years of oil changes/tire rotations came with my Prius, and I was reminded every 6 months by e-mail. I continued to be reminded after the routine maintenance was on my dime. I didn’t need to be reminded, so I unsubscribed, and the unsubscribe even worked.

    Maybe Southeast Toyota Distributors have more wrong than the $700 wash job, or whatever it is.

    Years ago, I put a hitch on a Geo Spectrum which had amber turn lights, and I needed an electronic gadget for the trailer lights. I was surprised I could even get a hitch for that car, but Draw-tight sold one.

    The owners manual said not to tow with that car, but it worked fine for towing my Laser sailboat, about 350 pounds total for the trailer and boat.

    Me too, we did get 2 free oil changes and rotation and that’s all, when we bought our Slorolla and the xB we did get survey forms,coupons and service reminders and such. My sister still get online coupons from the Dodge dealer for discounted services even after the warranty is expired, good business idea to keep the customer going back to the dealership and perhaps check out the new metal.

    We’re constantly detailed by Honda and Nissan. Oil changes, all manner of services, we want to buy your car, etc. I like the oil change offers because I know I’ll get the right parts, but also because I know that a tech is going to go over the car looking for issues to fix. That’s the real deal; a discount for oil, and then they find billable work. I’ll take it.

    Guys, yesterday a tech told me that even dealers are selling crappy Chinese made parts for all kinds of cars, only new cars come with the genuine stuff, I find that hard to believe, your opinions please!

    No he is not a dealer tech, has hie own shop and he claims that dealers are selling OEM parts made in China! personally I can’t believe they’d be so stupid as to do that. Then why would people spend more to have their cars fixed at the dealership?

    @ 28,Pedro: I like it very much.The diesel option won’t be until the second year of production,and here’s the dumbest thing; The V6 option is only the 3.6 instead of the brand new 4.3L TRUCK engine….FAIL.I bought two of the S10′s,90 and 92,both with the 4.3L V6.Excellent engine too.All that meat,and now no potatoes……I’m not going to ask what was gm thinking,I’m going to ask why they WEREN’T thinking.A car engine in a truck,with a totally redesigned truck V6 that they say is ONLY for the 1/2 full size pu.

    I can tell you that yes they do on occasion. If you go to get an oil change and they find out you need a brake job and the parts are not in stock they will put in non OE unless you ask for OE parts. Most customers don’t want to wait two days for a brake job.

    On oil changes the filters are OEM the oil at both dealerships I have worked at is bulk oil, as a matter of fact both dealerships use the same oil… as do most of the dealerships in the town where I live. I do not know if they have different additive “packs” put in the oil or not.

    Usually if it is non OEM they will tell you… but I am sure service advisors have neglected to do that on occasion. This has been my experience working at a Honda and Ford dealer the last couple of years here in MN.

    It just seems to me that if you’re willing to pay dealer fees, you should at least expect to get parts as good as the ones that came with the vehicle. I recall a report 2 yrs ago where they caught some people placing Chinese parts in boxes that read: “Made in Japan”

    But in the case of some brands, they use Chinese parts, ex: Mustang transmissions, so of course those parts should come from country of origin. Also the Feds made a big deal about inferior China tires 2 yrs ago, why not do the same with parts, they’re costing consumers extra money when they have to be replaced too soon.

    I do know that often times I have seen the service advisors call with two quotes for the work to be done… one for OEM and one for non OEM parts as the price is usually quite a bit less for the non OEM stuff. They usually do it for older high mileage cars like yours.

    The non OEM stuff is local parts store parts not “off brand” parts the dealership stocks, at least at the two I have worked for. The mechanic probably told you this to let you know that often times the parts the dealer can get you same day are the same parts he gets. It is hard to keep inventory for 20 year old cars in stock in the hope someone might want them and want to pay the extra cost for them someday.

    @ Pedro: So it seems my friend,so it seems.I had two S10′s.A 1990,then a 92,both with the old 4.3L.They were animals,and got decent mpg for the times,and of course they were 4×4′s.I have the 3.6 in my ’12 nox awd.With four adults it works real hard.Even though I have the tow pkg,that ain’t never gonna happen given the fact I am surrounded by mountains,and the 3.6 is weak.Sigh…….

    HtG I did a quick Google search and it comes back with recalls and safety issues, not exactly the same as the problem with the parts unless we start to see wheels falling off due to faulty bearings or other key suspension parts failures. When I had the bad 3 month old CV axles replaced, the supplier asked for the bad one to be returned, you would think the manufacturer would take it apart and see why it failed so soon!

    #47 and then comes Colorado and five cylinders and its downhill for the GM mid size truck segment. I’m kind of surprised they kept the Colorado name, but I guess it rhymes with Silverado, I just hope the mechanicals are as good as the design.

    Yeah, the 3.6 has to “spin” a lot more than the 4.3 to do its thing. Ultimate performance, whether accelerating or climbing would be greater with the 3.6, but it would be screaming in lower gears, rather than being much more “relaxed” like the 4.3.

    50, The Vette would work pretty well as a daily driver, except for the bad mpg compared to what I am used to. If I had it in Florida, I would drive it some of the time for fun, as I do with the MINI, but would drive the Prius a majority of the time. To me, the Prius is the ultimate transportation appliance, with great mpg and utility, but is not much fun. I like having something else to drive part of the time, as long as I can afford to have “extra” cars.

    Hey Pedro, do we have the oldest daily drivers on the forum – your 98 Corolla and my 00 Cherokee? I do not know of any dealers that use the cheapest Chinese brands. They do use aftermarket brands for the used cars which are not the brands they are selling (the Toyota dealer puts NAPA or AutoZone parts on the 2008 Ford Focus they took in on trade, they are not buying genuine Ford). If there are servicing an older car in the same brand they sell, they might give the customer the option of having the aftermarket part, although most OEM’s offer lower cost “value line” or rebuilt parts which are close to what the parts stores sell in their good brands.

    I met 2 people who drive Corvettes as their daily driver. One still lives at home with Mom and Dad, so they can borrow a car with a backseat when necessary. The other was an absolute die-hard who lived in Wisconsin and put snow tires on his 81 Vette in the winter.

    GA I agree with you about the S-10 and the 4.3L. Mine did not have 4WD (when you buy used, you take what you can get). I am willing to wait and see how the 3.6L shakes out in the new Colorado. Considering the less than stellar reputation the Colorado has, If I where in charge I would has picked another state to name it after, maybe Oregon?

    C tech I believe so. But now my Crapolla is beginning to live up to its given name, besides the bad 3 month old CV axle, now the bearings on the same wheel are making noise all of a sudden, it is original and it did give me 15 yrs of life, so I guess I can’t complain, just like my Camry, 80% of all repairs involve FWD configuration. Should have bought a Tacoma back when.

    I know an “old timer” who refuses to buy anything front drive because of the complexity of the CV joints, etc. In his case, though, he wouldn’t need to worry about it much. He doesn’t drive much, and his vehicles rust out from the road salt before reaching 200K miles. He is now driving a ’94 Dodge pickup, and previously had a mid-80′s rear drive Olds.

    Nope. I have the oldest daily driver on the forum, apparently. 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS built in July of 1989. It’s my “drive to work” car.
