    I am a man, and I like cars quiet. Even 1000hp Drag Racers…

    I can believe the average American Buyer has a stigma against sub-compacts cars, but doesn’t as much against sub-compact SUVs.

    My question is do all these sub-compact SUVs get classified as “Trucks” for CAFE rules?

    I ordered my new 16 PMCW slt because ‘mini’ vans have grown too big,and too plush for my needs.After driving the PMC yesterday I am glad I waited.It has,(the wagon version) only one back row of seats,they fold and tumble,or you can just unbolt them and take them out completely.It has a 4 cyl so mpgs are better then most mini vans too.I ordered mine loaded to the gills,and still came in under 30k.And it has rear clamshell doors,not one huge and heavy liftgate like the ford tc wagon.Much more usable,and easier to use too.

    I don’t find it hard to believe that the average buyer will choose a subcompact SUV over a subcompact car. The former has more room, can be had with AWD, can feel less subcompact, and rides a little higher. Amazingly, the Honda HRV has enough room to accommodate two kids in car seats and still leave them with enough room to NOT kick the front seat backs even when they’re slid all the way back. This certainly wasn’t the deciding factor for putting it at the top of my list, but it was a make-it-or-break-it consideration. Dang it, now there’s one less excuse to get what I really want!

    2 The PMC is about the same width, and 10 inches longer than my short wheelbase 1989 Caravan, but substantially taller.

    The current “minivans” are about 7 inches wider than both the PMC and old Caravan, and 16 inches longer than the PMC. They have gotten huge.

    3 I understand people buying the mini CUV’s, but a reason NOT to get one, is that they get lousy gas mileage compared to a car, especially at highway speed where the extra drag hurts the most. We are in a time of cheap(er) gas, though, so few people care.

    It’s too bad almost no one sells wagons in the U.S. They have most of the cargo hauling advantages of small SUV’s, but without the mpg, and handling hit of the tall vehicles.

    When gas prices started to go down,I knew it wouldn’t last,and around here,it didn’t last very long at all.Diesel is still cheaper then reg gas,but I don’t do near the miles that I used too.Given also the fact that the def goes sour pretty fast,then that cause more problems etc,etc etc.I’m very happy with my choice.

    @ Kit: Yeah,they have grown substantially since 89.I found yesterday that the pmc is what will do the job for me,with some frills as a added bonus.As I told you guys a while back,no more v8′s,or v6′s for me…just don’t need them.And with sales of the caravan,and t&c falling down,the new minivan’s are where folks like me are going.My congrats to FCA for bringing over their mini van.

    Not sure how the color study was conducted, but naming Orange as the top color choice of men is a real head scratcher. Orange has almost always been in the mix at one or more manufacturers, but it is hardly a staple color, even in sports cars. I see some orange Challengers because they are big into the retro colors, but orange Corvettes, Camaros and Mustangs are rare compared to red, black or even blue. It seems more common in compact cars like Focus and Sonic, but still is no where near a top choice. Does anyone else find this conclusion firmly planted in left field?

    Kit- the reason my wife and I are looking at one is because we would prefer a hatch and would like AWD. With those two things in mind you almost have to buy a CUV. Right now I would probably pick the Crosstrek and mostly because of the motor. The Tax and HRV barely have enough power to get out of their own way, the Crosstrek is a little better.
    Mileage? don’t really care, we don’t even put 15,000 km’s a year on our cars so it doesn’t really matter.

    7 Yeah, I’ve been putting “minivan” in quotes for a few years now, and often call the “so-called minivans” in speech.

    9 Yeah, if you want AWD, there is a lot more choice with the tall ones. If I wanted an AWD hatch, it would probably be an Impreza, but a few years ago, all Subarus got crossed from my shopping list, because I didn’t want 4wd.

    @ MJB: Yes…it was time years ago when they started to get bloated and expensive.

    @ GM Veteran: I’ve never owned an orange vehicle,and hockey teams will thrive down below before I ever do.Same same with the grabber blue,plum crazy and those other weird colors,to me at least.

    8 I don’t see many orange cars either, and not many are even available. The Fiesta ST I drove a year ago was orange, though. Orange has been an on again, off again color for Challengers. I think it’s “off” this year.

    I saw an orange car at a show recently that I didn’t know was sold, a ’77 Corvette. The owner said it was the original color.

    Kit, the orange was an original color for several model years in the 70′s Corvettes. A guy I knew had one. But, still a rarity compared to red, white and black.

    On the HRV, I agree. When you go WOT you sit and wait a while before realizing the little train that could actually did, you just didn’t notice. The only I could say in its favor in that regard is we had it loaded up pretty full—kids and all—when we test drove it.

    I could maybe do the orange but not the wife and it will be her car so I guess we’re representative of the stats. She was thinking the blue.
    We have a pontiac vibe now and it has the 2.4L motor, that baby has some get up and go for a grocery getter.
    Back seat will mostly be for the dog but sometimes for passengers.

    I am surprised that you appear unaware that the Chrysler van plant was shut down for between 90 – 120 days for retooling. After all it is located across the river from Detroit.

    19 Good color. My antique Caravan is light blue metallic, a popular color in the ’80′s, but barely available now.

    My thinking behind the Town & Country/Caravan sales going south is…. I bet that a lot of companies buying other makes because in the not to distant past these other makes didn’t exist. Maybe businesses that don’t need a full-size van and went with a panel Caravan. But now there are so many other offerings to chose from that may better fit their needs.

    23 It seems that most people are buying their tall wagons with hinged doors, because of the “stigma” of vans. When I was a kid and young adult, it was big wagons that had that image.

    Possible reasons why people are passing over the Chrysler / Dodge minivans: (JMHO)

    Costs: With just a few ‘must have options’ they are topping $40K+
    Image issues as far a quality & recalls.
    People turned off by Fiat owning Chrysler.
    They are huge, heavy and thirsty. You could easily cut the length by 10″, and the width and height by 5″ and still offer three comfortable rows with good cargo space.
