October 20th, 2015 at 6:00pm

In each edition of Autoline Daily Insight we get in-depth analysis from insiders and experts on the issues that drive the news in global automotive industry.

Strict fuel efficiency standards are coming for all automakers; neither budget compacts nor gargantuan flagships will be spared. As a result, OEMs are going through unprecedented lightweighting efforts. With the launch of the all-new BMW 7 Series, the company has engineered a body in white like none Autoline has ever seen. Florian Schek is the Head of Lightweight Construction and Vehicle Weight for the BMW Group. John McElroy asks him to explain the rationale behind BMW’s mixed material, steel and carbon fiber strategy.

I expect the same carbon tech to be included in the next X5 and perhaps the 6 series. BMW learned alot from the i3/i8 (they’re sharing it with Toyota in return for hybrid know how). However BMW still has no Tesla S competitor so perhaps BMW is betting on lightweighting and hybrid over pure electric like Tesla…
