    Well, I agree with Tata profits and how well Tata is doing, but earnings were included one time gain from insurance which they had lost numbers of cars last in China. That made numbers looked more big. Talking to how well Tata is doing, it is impressive that margins is around 16%

    While the big penalties for VW have not hit yet, it still seems like they are doing better profit-wise than I would have expected. Still being in the black does not provide much credence to VW saying the US agencies are being too hard on them. If anything, I hope this encourages the EPA/FTC/DoJ to extract as much financial pain as possible to set an example. VW should not be brought to the brink of bankruptcy, but they should expect to at least dip into the red for a year or two to atone for their “criminal” corporate decisions.

    The biggest thing I missed when I gave up my old Maxima for an SUV was the loss of vision due to thicker A pillars and shorter glass. It took a couple of near misses at 4 way stops to figure that out. And the damned mirrors with all their sensors and electronics also block out a big part of the windshield too.

    The EPA and justice department have been very easy on VW, so far. The company could face 48B or so in fines, for their blatant violation of the law. If that happened, there would be a lot of red ink, rather than a little less black ink.

    @2: I would be in favor to simply fine/penalize VW in accordance with their transgressions, disregarding the potential impact. VW has violated regulations in many countries in the world and will hopefully be punished in all countries. There will be different time frames and levels of punishment for different numbers of vehicles. So fine-tuning the U.S. EPA/FTC/DoJ fines in order to inflict a certain level of pain seems to me a very difficult undertaking requiring coordination of international courts and government agencies. Let’s keep it simple: just punish VW according to the crimes in each country. If they go belly up by the sum of those law enforcement efforts, so be it. VW is not too big to fail.

    It is just not the structural designs of most A-pillars that make them huge blind spots. Many EOMs are packaging side-impact curtain airbags in the A-pillars. I can think of two “heart-stoppers” in my current vehicle (a 2011 Cruze) where I almost pulled out into on-coming traffic “blinded” by the A-pillar. One was a motorcycle going about 50 mph and it would not have been pretty (much more for him than me).

    I’d think it would be possible to make strong, oval-shaped A pillars, and orient them the “thin” way from the driver’s line of sight. To take full advantage, the left and right side pillars would need to be different, and it might be difficult to put air bags in them.

    I have long considered the burgeoning size of the ‘A’ pillar a safety hazard. Making a left hand turn in my ’08 Suzuki SX4 is a bit scary because of how much of the view gets blocked. I must physically lean over to the right to see what is hidden behind the drivers side pillar while making a turn.
