    New Battery: Its been awhile since my last chemistry class, but if something has a temperature of combustion, doesn’t that mean that it is flammable?

    I have never heard of the Electrovan. It was a very interesting show and thank you for putting it together for Autoline After Hours.

    Floyd Wyczalek was a guest to have on the show. I don’t know if I will make 92, but if I do and I am half as sharp as he is, I would be on top of the world.

    I remember reading about the ElectroVan in one of my dad’s old Mechanix Illustrated. Back the it was like the future had come. Hearing Mr. Wyczalek narrate the story makes me realize how futuristic it really was. Got to see the van in person in 2006 at the GM Heritage Center. What a great guest~

    The new battery technology is quite exciting. Now given that production may be within three years, and if it works and is adopted, will lead to a significant increase in electric vehicles, it would behoove the electric utilities to hop on their horse and make sure that the electric grid can handle the increase in demand. We haven’t talked much lately of whether the grid will be able to handle the demand because up until now the need for greater demand made the question moot; now maybe not as much.

    And I think when they say that their material is non flammable that means that it will not combust at normal type, and even high temperatures; anything will burn if the temp is high enough.

    #6 Grid improvements won’t necessarily need to be made in any kind of short time frame. Most EVs are charged overnight when the grid load is lower anyway. Also, the conversion to EVs is likely to take decades. Even if 100% of new vehicles became EVs overnight, it would take 20+ years of production to completely replace the existing fleet of vehicles. It’s likely to take 10 or more years for EVs to even make up a majority of production given the state of current battery technology and its costs.

    Points taken, however, with a five minute recharge now we are talking mainstream use with no penalty for not using gasoline. There is quite a large lead-in to expansion of power production, so what I was trying to allude to was; wondering if thought (and need) are being actively pursued. I also think that you are right that an infrastructure change will be a decade or two away (if that); the ICE isn’t done yet.

    The hardware and power cords for these 5 minute charges will be interesting, with a charge current of about 2500 amps at 240 volts for a 40 kWh charge.

    I wouldn’t hold my breath on that 5 min charge time. There are dozens of different battery technologies being developed currently. They all have a great story and seem to work in the laboratory. It’s the real world that sinks most of them, just like things like cellolosic alcohol and the many other technologies that were supposed to transform our driving over the decades.
