    The real consumer cost of owning a car is the annual expenses that the owner actually pays out of pocket. Not a loss of resale value that is invisible and used to inflate the “cost of ownership” by marketing companies to “skew” the comparison of expensive top tier cars to less expensive vehicles.

    I agree with the guest’s statement about not knowing about auto shows being in town. The last time I went to the Miami Auto Show I asked to sign up for future notices. I was told that they don’t do this. I thought how crazy not to have this.

    Maybe it was discussed, but another factor in auto show attendance might very well be the cost factor of new vehicles. Many have been priced out of the new market. So why bother going if one can not afford whats on display? Wait and see how those new models bear up to real world conditions and then buy used.

    I wonder how many years were factored into the cost of car ownership per year; if you hang on to ‘that puppy’ the cost is going to come down.

    Does weather have something to do with auto show attendance? Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland shows are in the dead of winter when there is little competition for expending discretionary time.

    Car show attendance continues to escalate in cost to the consumer. Take New York. The cost of the admission ticket, parking, tolls, and food make the hassle not worth it. You go there, the cars are locked up, no brochures to take home, crowds standing around the hot models…you get the picture. Highlights of each show appear on YOUTUBE and Autoblog which is enough for most folks.

    @1 Agree that depreciation should not be used in figuring cost of ownership, as that fluctuates based on how long you keep the vehicle and what it is. If I had bought a 1965 Mustang Shelby for $4800 in 1965 my depreciation would different in 1975 vs its value in 2015.
    They should just figure the standard life of a vehicle is around 15 years where most everything luxury or not is all worth about the same. Take the MSRP divide it by 15 add in maint and gas per year and there is a more realistic cost of ownership IMO.

    I’ve gone to the Philly Auto Show almost every year for 20 years + . What has been a personal turn off is no or few concept models. Also waiting in line to get in a car behind 7 10 YOs that have to fiddle with every damn knob in the car is a PITA. Also when I saw a guy let his kids run their dirty shoes all over the seats in a tan leather Jaguar that he’d never buy pissed me off. He said nothing as his brats trashed the inside of this car while I waited to get in. I finally said the hell with it as I didn’t want my pants covered in salt and dirt. Courtesy seems to be a forgotten behavior and parents could be bothered to watch their kids or what they do. I agree with the costs of attending a show are getting prohibitive as well. For my wife and I to go it costs about $70-80 between show tickets , train tickets any food or drinks which thanks to the Philly soda tax are insane. I love to see the new cars ,but I ask myself every year why I bother.

    The auto shows at Cobo hall, Detroit MI have huge record breaking crowds each year.
    Personally I would love to go to the auto show, but the trip to downtown Detroit about 20 miles away is not one I’d want to make. I wish they had followed through with plans they had a while back to relocate the auto show to the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, its just down the street from me.

    If you lease a car, the interest you pay is only on the projected depreciation, for which you have no risk.

    Further, you only pay sales tax monthly on the depreciation, not on the total value of the car.

    At least, that’s true in Michigan.

    We’ve driven new GM vehicles for years in MI (currently Equinox, Cruze) at way less than $200 per month, Onstar, XM, roadside assistance, oil changes included, always under warranty, never have to replace brakes, tires or battery.

    OK, it’s 10,000 miles a year, but renting a car for a short-duration high-mileage trip is cheaper than driving your own anyway.

    22K for a 1200lb replacement battery–a double makes no sense situation. Low profit potential is preventing this extremely sensible approach.

    #9 That is the same reason I stopped going. I attended the Detroit show for about 10 years strait however it was typically during the manufacturer/press days, prior to being open to the public.
    I went one time on a general public day and said never again. Lots of people (which is a good thing) but not with mindless parents pushing strollers through the crowd and as you mentioned parents just allowing their kids to use the cars as jungle gyms. Also a huge drop in concept cars which was always my reason for going. All the other cars you can go to a dealership and view them.
    I only go now if I get tickets to the pre-public days.

    The last show I went to was NYC in 2012. It was interesting, partly because of the location, where I’d only been once before. The show, itself, was a disappointment. There was very little I couldn’t see, just by spending a day going to the different dealers. The only “debuts” I remember were the upcoming MKZ and Impala. There were probably some “new” SUV’s, but nothing memorable.

    Even more disappointing, is that, even in the “big apple,” there were few exotics on display, even behind ropes. Then, there is the crowd, expensive food, etc. I’ll just check out the cars by going to dealers, and see “what’s new” from various on-line and print sources.

    I went to the auto show last December in Indianapolis and it was a big disappointment, I only go to a show if interested in a new vehicle, that’s about every 10 years.

    I’ve been to the Indy show a couple times, years ago, and it was like going to the dealers, even the same people. It saved trips between the dealers, though.

    So $22,000 / $120,000 ~= 18% of the original car value to replace a failed, Tesla traction battery.

    In the Prius community, $2400 / $24,000 ~= 10% of the original car value to replace a failed, Prius traction battery.

    FYI, traction batteries can also be rebuilt and in the Prius community, frequently are. Also, I understand Tesla has a trade-in for a failed traction battery although I don’t know how much it is.

    So what is the price to replace the engine of a $110,000 Maserati Quattroporte? Is it even offered in the USA?

    I started going to auto shows in the late ’80s, when concept cars were everywhere and Chrysler added to the excitement by actually building many of them (in the 90′s) almost as they were on the show floor. As everyone has stated, there are rarely any real concept vehicles shown at the local (ATL) auto show, and they don’t advertise very well, so unless I pursue it, I’ll easily miss the show.

    Replacing batteries on an electric car happens far sooner than replacing an engine on an IC car. It was a mistake that the analysis didn’t consider battery replacement in its analysis.

    And their recommendation of buying a used electric, if doesn’t consider that it might soon need battery replacement, was also flawed.

    I used to fly to Michigan every January for the NAIAS from Florida…just to remind myself why I left in 1972! Last couple of trips just didn’t feel like it was worth it. Also, I had family North of Detroit but they have now passed.

    Tesla ev batteries are 8 yr unlimited ml warr.on drive train the mod s is a premium car ,do you know how much to rebuild a drivetran of a comparable hi perf. BMWW or Mercedes AMG or the drivetrain of a ferari or lambo. ,cars that Tesla routinely beat at dragstrips?.

    In today’s show there was speculation about an Indian car company buying FCA. I say what about a tech company? If President Trump is successful in providing an opportunity for companies to bring their cash back to the US at a 10% tax rate, Apple would have plenty of cash to buy FCA. Then FCA can incorporate all of the Apple tech that has been developed into their cars.
