    VW may have their work cut out for themselves in doubling U.S. sales in a few years, by adding more SUV’s. I’ve had three VW’s over the last 20 years, and they were all “anti-SUV’s,” a Golf, a Passat wagon, and a Jetta wagon. If I wanted an SUV, it wouldn’t be a VW. The American VW owners I know feel the same way. They have VW’s because they offer something “different,” likr a GTi, or an affordable fwd wagon.

    With all the talk of anticipated SUV growth and the desire to gain more market share in the US, why in the world has VW decided not to offer the T-Roc in the US ASAP? Given the growth of the B-crossover segment and the profitability of crossovers as a whole, their decision makes absolutely no sense.

    Wasn’t VW that had in their ads, drivers wanted; well they need to try to embrace that theme if they want to persuade buyers to move to their SUV’s. Agree with Kit; the SUV’s already available are pretty awesome, hypothetically, why do I want to switch (and get a V-dub).

    China, on their flyting train: bring it (till then, I remain skeptical).

    And on BMW’s data analytics (improving production); pretty much think (all the majors) are doing this (though they may call it something else).

    The top speed (750 mph) of China’s high speed train is curiously close to the speed of sound (which varies by the medium it is passing… nominally 711-762 mph thru air, depending on humidity). Does the train’s vacuum tube obviate a sonic boom as there are no air waves to collide?

    If they could develop a high speed train that you could drive your electric car into then that would be something. Then once you exit the train terminal you have your personal vehicle and belongings to take you the rest of the trip. Plus resolves range anxiety of EVs. Ride sharing and Uber are not the way to go sightseeing.
    The biggest problem with a train is making multiple stops so the speed is great but it would be like flying cross-country with 8 stops along the way. Now make a smaller train with exit ramps so traveling from NY to L.A. non-stop is possible and then your talking.

    Continental is not exactly leading the way in new technology. I worked in the exhaust industry 20 years ago. I know of one manufacturer that had already developed an electrically heated catalyst back then. Granted the power draw was a problem back then but its been done.

    @5 – I suspect sightseeing from within a vacuum tube (and within a train fuselage than needs to withstand high speed pressure) will not afford many undistorted portals.

    It’d be nice if it can provide EV charging, assuming it does ferry service.

    Tbe train in a tube will not be for sight seeing. It will be for going between cities, seeing nothing but the inside of the pod you’re in, and the electronic gadget you’re playing with.

    I just don’t get it. VW is going to nearly triple sales in the US in less than 3 years by selling SUVs? Then, they’re going to become an electric car company?

    Where is the evidence they know how to do either? It was 30 years ago that “The Paradigm Shift” taught us that, when technology changes, your previous experience counts for naught.

    And, they still have to dig out of the Diesel hole they dug for themselves. I drove by the Pontiac Silverdome tonight, on Featherstone Road. It is just incredible: The parking lot is half full with VWs. Thousands and thousands of them.

    9 Those cars at the Silverdome lot may be bought back diesels.

    Yes, they are cheating Diesels. There are parking lots all over the country with them. The biggest is in Baltimore which, coincidentally, is the main vehicle import / export port.

    Could it be VW intends to export these cars to other countries to resell?

    I would expect them to export them to countries without laws and regulations, like Somalia, Afghanistan, or now, maybe Venezuela.

    No show today; guess we’ll have to entertain ourselves: Remember Brazil and their high ethanol fuel (if I recall correctly 100% being offered); wonder how they are making out with it. I think they were using sugar cane to make their fuel.

    Sugar cane is a much more “efficient” source of bio ethanol than corn. They use high ethanol fuel in cars, but probably not quite E100, because it would replace vodka, and they’d lose tax money.

    Yes Brazil uses E100.

    #7&8 I didn’t mean to imply sightseeing from the train but once you get to a city like say San Francisco you would be stuck at a train station. So to get around you either Uber or ride share or rent a car. But probably only renting a car would be practical for sightseeing.

    12 – I believe VW agreed to not export/resell the vehicles unless they can be fixed to US emission standards.
