    While I’m not a pro-union guy, I’m glad to see the strike over at the CAMI plant. I would have liked to have seen GM favor the Canadian plant over the ones in Mexico. At least the Canadian workers can afford to buy what they build, something the Mexican workers are most likely not able to do. But I know at the end of the day, it’s about the bottom line and not the employee.

    Robo-snowplows, especially at airports is finally autonomy that I can get behind of; great idea. This way they can be continuously plowing, keeping the runways clean, and not having to wait (as much) and then having to do, heavy plowing, due to accumulation.

    I think there should be a universal (or adaptors) for universal electric charging. If Tesla didn’t want to share their charge stations they should have electrically locked out other users via an electronic key (of some sort); after all, that is what they do (electronic control, extraordinaire).

    How about an analysis as to why SUV type cars have pushed the classical sedan and coupe off the showroom floor in sales numbers? Your historical perspective of looking in the rear view mirror of the auto industry would be interesting. Why and how did this happen?

    I always thought it was crap that a charging connection was agreed upon for all EVs and then Tesla went off and did their own thing. I mean I understand Tesla wanting to lead the way but as EV’s become more popular having multiple charging stations exclusive to a particular maker is just plain nuts. Actually surprised no one has made an adapter from a Tesla charger to SAE. The government needs to mandate a common connector like they did with the nozzle switch to unleaded. Then if Tesla wants to offer free charging I’m sure they could provide a pass card.

    While I agree with your reason regarding Volvo spinning off Polstar, into a stand along electric company and the fact that it’ll be located in China, I think there may be another reason as well. With Polstar as a sub-brand for Volvo, like AMG, M, and Audi’s RS, sounds exciting, now that Lotus is apart of the Geely family, personally I believe that Volvo might move more specialty vehicles with an “Engineered by Lotus” badge on the bumper then with an equivalent one from Polestar! I remember seeing that badge on a number of 2-door Volkswagen and Suzukis (and I think and number of Isuzu as well) in the 80s, and thought that might one day also be on the back of a Volvo, is pretty exciting!

    #3 Phred Good question but from every article I’ve read I would say its a combination of a few things. First being the popularity of the minivan exposed people to higher more upright seating position giving you a better view of the road. Secondly (prob biggest reason) Parents often ride share/carpool kids and transport three or more kids need a third row due to the seatbelt requirements not available in any sedan. Thirdly the shift in minivans no longer being cool pushed people to the SUV market allowing them to keep the third row AWD and higher seat position. IMO

    Autonomous snow plows…this should increase the winter mailbox replacement rate to almost 100% in rural areas.

    6 Those reasons sound valid, but there are others. Seeing all of the Tahoe/Yukon/Suburban/Expeditions in Florida, which never haul anything more than two people and a few groceries, it seems that some people want to make sure they use their share of the petroleum before it’s all gone. Also, they want to make it as unpleasant as possible for those of us who still drive cars, by driving something tall and wide so we can’t see ahead. Also, I suppose, they want to be “safe” when they crash, never mind the other road users in smaller vehicles.

    OK, sorry, I’m being a little cynical.

    In reality, if gas weren’t dirt cheap in America, a lot fewer people would drive SUV/CUVs (and pickup trucks), because even the small ones are gas hogs compared to cars, especially at highway speed, where the extra height means extra aero drag.

    As Lambo said, minivans aren’t “cool” because of the mommy-mobile image, but why hasn’t that image caught up with CUVs? It certainly fits, now, much more so than it fits vans.

    As far as family vehicle stigma, the station wagon got it first and the minivans virtually replaced them, then the minivans had that negative connotation as the SUVs took over. I guess we need some unforeseen new iteration to replace them if you want to see a drop in CUV/SUVs. The tall ride height seems to be a draw to them as a good compromise between a car and large truck. Even if you don’t prefer the higher seating (as I do), you almost need it as Kit said, to be able to see in the tall traffic of nowadays.

    #10 & others – While I realize the stigma attached to station wagons (& hatchbacks) I’ve always liked them. Still have the 2004 V70R which is a very fun vehicle to drive. It also pulls a trailer up to 3300 lbs, & with winter tires is great in the snow. Drove it to Arizona & Colorado (starting in Michigan) last month & averaged 24.6 MPG for the trip. Not as good as the Corvette would get, however, much more room to haul stuff back from AZ.

    Kit the popularity of the SUVs in Florida is ease of entry. Not all people of age can get down in a corvette like you. Or maybe they just want to be like everyone else.

    #11 Well what goes around comes around. Maybe we will see a wagon revitalization someday. The Magnum and CTS wagon were cool just didn’t sell. I’d still like to see a modern remake of the El Camino/Rancharo. Oh I guess that would be the Honda Ridgeline. Guess there wouldn’t be much interest in a 2 seater.

    I guess Polestar is being reinvented, but the only Polestar I’ve seen up close is the very cool V60 Polestar wagon. It’s pricey, at about $61K, but is a very quick, and sporty handling machine.

    13 They were making El Caminos, by a different name, in Australia until a few days ago, when Holden shut down. It would be cool to have one of those here, even though they are RHD, but it will probably be a 25 year wait.

    #16. Tesla will probably welcome the competition from Polestar. After all, it validates that what Tesla is doing is worth going after.

    If gas prices climb back to the $4-$5 range you will see an increased interest in EVs. I think as long as gas prices stay low EV’s will struggle. Plus the fact that currently the EVs can only pull from that declining sedan market. Yea Tesla has a CUV but your still talking luxury pricing. The first EV maker to offer a good SUV/CUV in the under 40K will probably do real well but again only if gas prices jump up a bit.

    #13, you can add the Flex to the list of wagons that didn’t sell well. I give Ford credit for keeping it around as long as they have. Everyone who has one seems to love them. Ingress/egress is exceptional and the seating position is moderately high.

    I like the Flex, except that the seats don’t fold into a flat floor like a “proper” wagon. At least they don’t fold flat in an early one a friend has. The styling of the Flex struck me as a really big first gen Scion xB.
