    The present Explorer is not 10 years old. It presently is a little less than 8 years old and will be a little over 9 years Old when replaced. There is a temptation to date its platform back to the 2009/2010 Flex and MKT, but substantial design changes for SUV attributes renders very little commonality..

    The new Chevy Traverse may be heralded for its sharp styling, lighter weight and improved 3rdvrowvseating space, but its interior craftsmanship is substandard to the Explorer. I’ll go as far to say the latest Honda Pilot just barely catches up to the Explorer’s interior quality of materials. And I am not talking about Explorer’s Platinum trim, which holds its own against most luxury SUVs, including Range Rover.

    On the Tesla model 3 I wonder how the level of issues found compares to other EV manufacturers. Also on the high effort for the trunk closure. I would be okay with that. Nothing worse than trying to unload your trunk on a windy day and the lid hits you in the head with a gust of wind behind it.
    I really like my current vehicle Cadillac CTS coupe. But one of my biggest frustrations is the doors will not stay open if on any, and I mean any kind of incline or a slight breeze. So you open the door swing your leg out only to have the door close on your shin. My car also has the electric switch entry and exit but with mechanical levers on the floor in case of power failure.

    Ironic that Ford Motor is based in Michigan, where its newly patented horror-show AV police car could not operate.

    The Michigan Constitution requires a real human being as a police officer arresting or ticketing other real human beings.

    This is why there are no automated ticketing cameras in Michigan. Lucky us! Pity the other 49 states and the rest of the world though….

    An automated cop car? Didn’t these guys ever watch Robocop?! Crazy.

    Hopefully never.. but any bets on the first fireman to be electrocuted by an EV during extrication. Certainly drives home the need for some SAE standards for power storage and routing. Between the airbags in the pillars and possible high voltage wires getting a person from a wreck could be very time consuming.
    Wonder if there is an app that details cut points on vehicles for first responders?

    Lambo- I’ve heard there is such an app but I don’t carry my phone with me and the department doesn’t have smart phones on all the trucks- too much $$$ is their excuse.

    @1 – If you’re waiting for a true tear-down analysis on the Tesla Model 3 from Monro, you may be disappointed. As I interpret the term “benchmarking report,” I’m not expecting a teardown. What we’ve seen so far is an in-depth walkaround evaluating touch points a customer would encounter as well as on-the-surface details.
    If a teardown is in store, I’ll be right there with you to watch. But I’d imagine that the price of admission on such a project would mean the customers are car companies with a significant ability to pay, not freebie viewers of Autoline Daily. The best I’d expect for free would be an extended look on Autoline After Hours.
    But I’ll keep my fingers crossed for more.

    Sandy Munro specializes in complete tear downs. We’ve already done Autoline After Hours shows with him documenting his comprehensive tear downs of the BMW i3 and Chevrolet Bolt EV. Stay tuned. His tear down of the Tesla Model 3 will take another month or so to complete. Once it’s done we’ll have him on the show for a deep dive into his results.

    It sounds like Monro wants pairs of dashed lines at the front and rear labeled ‘Cut Here.’ Then a glass breakout punch over each of the rear door windows. Hummmm, after market opportunity?

    Universal battery cutout switch (at the battery or a lever/cable/other mechanical disconnect to access power at the source); then rescuers can cut at will. Little time should be wasted on wondering what to do.

    Maybe someone mentioned it, but how about “automatic” disconnects if the air bags blow? The disconnects could be powered by smaller versions of air bag pyrotechnics.

    Watching the short video of the Kona made me wonder when that thing was going to contact some of that gravel it was traveling over, talk about low ground clearance, I wouldn’t be taking that thing too far off road, I think it would bottom out just on some of our potholes in SE Michigan, for sure on some of the dirt road pot holes that inhabit our area this time of year.

    15 Tbe Kona probably has as much ground clearance at my Prius, which has enough for my off road driving, which is more than most SUV’s ever see:-)

    Kit – The problem with an auto disconnect upon air bag deployment is the loss of auto 911 and 911-like calls as many new cars do.

    Most of Sandy’s complaints on the Model 3 are just his personal opinion. Many people may prefer a door push button and a trunk lid that stays open like they used to in the old days :) The only tweak I would do in Tesla’s place if add mechanical door openers to back passenger doors and the frunk, for when the car is aged and releases don’t work as consistently year round.
    Bottom line is for you guys to watch out so a scientific tear down doesn’t get wattered down based on personal bias.
    I also get it that splitting model 3 comments into your week will raise your view count, but all consistently negative will increase your hate mail too. I for one like the Model 3 and hope to buy one when it’s available, and hope comments such as Sandy’s don’t risk the Tesla enterprise (or accelerate its demise depending how you see it).

    17 An auto disconnect should disconnect only the high voltage battery, but not the 12v battery that would run non-powertrain stuff. The Tesla S, and I’m pretty sure the Model 3 have a 12v battery.

    While it shouldn’t prevent use of the 12v to power a disconnect for the big battery, I see on a Tesla forum that the S and X are really hard on their 12v batteries, and they often last only a year or so. There must be a lot of residual load when the car is off and, understanably, the small battery is charged only when the car is “on.”

    18 I felt the same way in watching the Tesla 3 tear-down. Some legitimate concerns like rear passenger access but as I mentioned in my post some of the higher efforts for trunk and door openings I would be okay with. Many cars seem to have been designed to get those efforts as low as possible so now if you park up hill your door wont stay open and with a slight breeze the trunk wont stay open. So IMO not engineered well.

    21 Kit sounds like they need to go to a deep cycle 12V battery if they only last a year.

    They use an AGM battery, which does relatively well, but maybe a trolling motor type battery would do better. They need maintenance, though, which would not be cool in a car like the S.
