    How about a APP that punches you in the face if you use your phone behind the wheel? I mean if the risk of getting killed won’t deter you does anyone really think a recorded message will? It’s called common sense ( which apparently isn’t very common anymore. Better yet How about $1000 fines and the confiscation of your phone until the fine is paid for the 1st infraction and going up $1000 for each additional occurrence if your that slow you didn’t get it the 1st time . If you want to get people’s attention you have to hit them in the wallet it seems like the only thing that does.

    In Ontario, it’s a $1,000 fine for first, $2,000 for next and $3,000 for third offence. Along with demerits and ramping license suspensions. Still a big problem. So maybe some social pressure will help. The big stick doesn’t seem to be.

    @1 – Much to your point, XA351GT, the only people who will even bother installing this app are the ones who are already compliant drivers. I seriously doubt there’d be many ‘rebel’ drivers even giving it the time of day. Kinda like downloading a Bible app, knowing full-well you’re never going to read it.

    @2 – I’m glad you mentioned that. Now I know for the next time I’m headed up to Toronto.

    I’m interested in knowing, however, if anyone in Ontario has ever been ticketed/fined for using the GPS on their phone while driving. Because I use mine whenever I’m driving in Canada. I trust Google Maps more than I do the 12yr old Satellite data locked into my car’s GPS nav system.

    In addition, I use my smart watch in conjunction so that all my directions are right there on my wrist. That way I don’t even have to look down at my phone while following GPS.

    @4. Good point. And don’t forget about bike riding. I often bike at around 20mph. Not that i’m punching in data on apps during bike rides, but hopefully that app would at least let calls through or allow a person to call out. Hopefully it will let the user initiate voice texting or other voice-activated input too.

    @5 I believe if your phone is mounted in some kind of cradle it’s OK – as long as you’re not pecking away on a text.

    #1 I think confiscation of ones phone would probably be the best deterrent. Especially if they dont ever get it back. Sure they could replace it the next day but most smart phones are pretty expensive. Also if insurance companies are notified and your premium changes like a DUI as its just as dangerous it could be another deterrent. Police have been able to keep vehicles used in transporting drugs so not sure why they wouldn’t be able to keep phones used in illegal activity.

    An AV communication standard is certainly needed however it will be interesting to see how they plan to handle revision levels. Once the first level of AV’s are released at say version 1.0 and 6 years later when cars are being built with 8.0 will they be compatible? We all know how well computers work running old operating systems and trying to open files today that were created using windows 98.

    Thermoplastic body panels. Takes me back in time to my 2005[?] Saturn Vue with the plastic body panels. Mine had the Yamaha built engine. That one and our old 1997 Subaru Outback were two of our all-time favorite vehicles.

    “Ford shot down the idea with a statement that reads, in part, “It would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the U.S. given an expected annual sales volume of fewer than 50,000 units and its competitive segment”.

    So What Ford is saying is they are not competitive and do not know how to build a car in that segment at that volume and make money? Sounds like a management problem not a tariff issue. If they cant someone will.

    5 I just put my phone in a cup holder and use voice commands for navigation. I don’t need to look at the phone at all, once I set the destination before starting the trip.

    12 A lot of cars sell in the 50,000 range or less in the U.S., but you don’t build a plant for them, unless they are specialty cars, like Corvette.

    11 Did Saturn use Yamaha engines? I thought the only non-GM engines were Honda, but I could be wrong.

    #14 Ford doesnt need to build a new plant with the discontinuation of so many other car platforms they have to have capacity at existing plants.

    As to the car app, I lot it with other safety items. If one observes car operator behavior, few have taken their car back for airbag recalls. My insight says while some survey says we are all about safety, we as a public are not. While seat belt use is now a norm, at one time it was not. While the world pounds out a message of “save the planet cars are bad” , we as a US buying public continue to gobble up vehicles that use more fuel when alternatives are available. Having said all that an app was created as a thin veiled answer that has other solutions. one of those wold be to ditch the car infotainment and in its place sell an adapter to fit a tablet or cell phone into it. Slap the adapter in place and the mobile device becomes the infotainment interface. Distracted driving is now down to a level of tuning the radio or adjusting the climate controls, without the full cost of radio development. You would not need apple car play or android auto – your mobile device is it radio, satellite, music, and nav. Then sell the hot spot service. And poof – a whole new industry is born!

    17 Lifted Focii is not a very efficient mix with F150s, or even Edges, in the same plant.

    @ 16 Saturn used the Honda V6 in 2004-2007 Vue models. The V6 equipped Vues also used Honda transmissions.

    Regarding my Saturn Vue – it definitely had an engine built by Yamaha. Thinking I got the year wrong, looks like it was a 2008. After Saturn dropped the Honda engine they briefly used a engine supplied by Yamaha, a six cylinder that put out some 250 HP. I remember looking at the window sticker and reading engine supplied by Yamaha, and thinking how odd that was, engine from a company know for building motorcycles.
