    The Buick shown in today’s show (I believe under the GM China Design segment) shows forward looking styling; this is what GM needs. They have the talent but so many times the produced vehicles just don’t hold up to the concept. Do it GM, and bring it to the U.S.

    John, on your request about what Autoline can do in the future; well, you’re doing a pretty good job right now, however (and I know you like to report and predict the future) but I would like to scale-back some of the autonomy and electric stories (for when there is really a significance) not just a slight peg on the news meter. JMO

    I absolutely agree, what we don’t need is more cheerleading pie in the sky stories about AVs, especially the uncritical ones that just repeat the AV proponents arguments about alleged improvement here and there.

    Imagine if Captain Sullenberger’s flight was on pure AV, no humans!!!! It would try to land at the stupid airports and, as the simulations proved, would CRASH, instead of trying the Hudson and saving all 155 abroad!

    But I strongly disagree about cutting back on the growth (WORLD WIDE) of the BEV segment, this is the only hot area today, it would be criminal not to report on it.

    GM’s $7B investment is great, but why act now when they could have begun any one of these investments earlier? Are the willing to make a guarantee in writing, or is this mirror “Tesla’s” ploy of deliberately making false promises just to get huge tax abatements?
    The auto industry, out of greed or necessity, threw out the 40 hour week with and forced trades to over-lap years ago, sooo now GM has grown a heart felt passion to suddenly care about their workers at the beginning of talks? I don’t think so.

    I think the show is great. A touch more international news would be nice. Otherwise, personally I think the mix of stories and their depth is ideal.

    I like your interviews. You are getting really good at separating the duds from the interesting ones. Well done.

    I agree workers should get more strike pay from the union. I think halving the union dues is even a better idea. If they do this, plus clean house, maybe the South will see the UAW as more attractive.

    10 GM probably “saved” the announcement of the $7B for the negotiation.

    12 Lowering dues would help in organizing in the south. Also, the union supports Dem politicians, which doesn’t go over well with the AR-15 loving, immigrant hating, anti-environmental members, of which there are a significant number. I suspect being apolitical would help the union organize more plants. And yeah, “cleaning house” would help quite a lot.

    In addition, re the show, if you have an automaker’s PR guy, engineer etc and you let them talk about a new model, you also need to grill them, no softballs, to inform the consumer of the strengths/weaknesses of that model. Alternatively, I prefer when you yourselves test the model and report back.

    In my profession all the top U’s have no strong professor’s unions, there is an overall one, the AAUP, but they never negotiate salaries and payraises, which are 100% “MERIT BASED” and 0% “needs based”. However, a former PhD student, who was a full professor at Virginia Tech before returning to SE MI to be with his family (wife is a senior Ford Engineer, with an MSE from UM), and accepting a position at a much ‘lower tier’ U, the U of Toledo, over there they do have a union and I believe they all get the same raise whether they work their posterior off or are incompetent lazy bums (“deadwood” in U parlance)

    John I really enjoy the show and I do like the occasional “Barn Find” and miss the segment you used to do “You Said It”. It was good to hear your feedback on some of the comments.

    As for the GM strike I believe your right John that the strike is more symbolic than strategic and aimed at sending a message to the Union Executives. Also I believe they pay them such little strike pay as it makes accepting an offer more appealing. If they got 80% of their pay many could hold out for a pie in the sky offer that may never come.

    I guess there is no guessing how Canada feels about Trump. Which if the automakers and so many others are in support of the higher standard I’m not sure what Trump is expecting to accomplish by freezing the EPA standards at 2022 levels.

    The sunvisor is a great idea and I can see that spreading throughout the industry.

    16 I was only in the union for about a year, 42 years ago, but not during a strike. I think the strike pay was much higher then, maybe 75-80%, so a lot of people looked at a strike as extra vacation, when it didn’t affect their income in such a serious way.

    If something could improve, I would like some of the data reported to be supported with more historical background. This would add clarification and better insight.

    Let’s give Dr. Data more air time. I’d love to see 10-year sales charts that show vehicle type and brand shifts in different markets. For example, I’m in the U.K. now for the 1st time in 20 years. I’m shocked at the large number of German brands on the road. Also, it’s good to see a mix of coupes, sedans and wagons. Charts please.

    17 I guess I was answering the wrong question, as I said there is a union covering all profs of all U’s, I believe, the AAUP, but it has no teeth as far as payraises are concerned. Each U has its own merit pay raise system, which can be abused, a lot of discretion is usually given to the Department chair to assign the raises, the deans rarely override them, and in research U’s they are based less on your scholarly achievements and more on how much $ you brought the greedy and wasteful U (because for every $ of funding you bring, you can spend only half of it, the other half is benefits and especially overhead. maybe more than half now.

    25 When I was in the UK in 1971, Ford was the top selling brand, even though the British-based industry still existed, sort of. Ford is still the best selling brand in the UK, with VW second. It’s anybody’s guess what will happen after the disaster that is Brexit.

    29 The Brits did win the war but it was a Pyrric victory, they were near-bankrupt at the end, the & was destroyed (Churchill bought a new ROlls in the 30s for only 2,000 pounds), lost India in 47 and dozens of other colonies by the 1960s.

    29 When I was in the UK in 1970-71, I had a VW, and there weren’t many of them there. At the time, there were a lot of people around who remembered WW II all too well.

    While there were a lot of Ford Cortinas, Consuls, Corsairs, and then-new rear drive Escorts, there were a lot of cars from the dying “home grown” brands, with a lot of Morris Minors running around. They would have been discontinued about the time I left the UK.

    About the show, and unions, I live in the south. Texas to be specific. It would be good for you to actually come to the “south” and see what goes on outside of Detroit. Do a show in Dallas or Austin, or even San Antonio where Toyota produces the Tundra and Tacoma. Tundra numbers are down compared to Ford, but they are gaining, service trucks here now use them more and they last longer. Slowly but surely there will be a problem for the remaining (big three) How people actually think and feel about these issues , and about the automotive industry. I read a lot of false prejudices regarding us on here from people who have never lived here for any amount of time. At least 5 years or more, and not be a snowbird off the economy. Also look at our non union economy, I hear a lot about the run down crime ridden cites of the rust belt a lot. We don’t have those. And we know why.

    Hello team Autoline. I love your show and content each day and week. How about a show on the inside story of manufacturers defects on new cars. How they find these defects, how the companies try and fix them, who is at fault, and who get fired for allowing these to get into the field. The outside vendors who share warranty repair costs, the PR / media control of the defect story, the dealers who have to handle angry customers, and the bottom line costs of these disasters all would be a great segment for a show.

    36 The northern industrial cities have lost hundreds of thousands of well paying factory jobs over the years, for various reasons. Not only have the “big three” lost a lot of market share to imports and transplants, but also, it takes a lot fewer employees to make a car, or any other product than it once did. This loss of jobs has a lot to do with the “run down crime ridden cites of the rust belt” you describe.

    The Toyota and other transplant factories in Texas, and in South Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Alabama, and wherever else they may be were mostly built on converted farmland, or whatever. While their getting tax exemptions, free roads, etc., along with a non-union work force has obviously been good for the companies, and for the people who have gotten the jobs, it might have been better for society as a whole, if the transplants had been placed in existing industrial areas, rather than as has been done.

    Anyway, the reason you don’t have the “run down crime ridden cites of the rust belt” has a lot to do with with jobs moving to your area for cheaper labor, government incentives, and maybe better winter weather.

    40 The crime in the snowbelt, and specifically in NY City (which has no auto plants as far as I know) and Chicago, existed long before some of the jobs moved south, since the 20s.

    The riots in Detroit in 67 which was the start of the ruin of a once prosperous city happened when GM and Ford and Chrysler had 90% of the auto sales in the US and not the 47% they have today.

    Maybe on top of the corruption in the unions you should also look at the corruption in the City Halls, most of them run by democratic machines such as the infamous Daley one in Chicago. Detroit city hall corruption has been legendary too.

    41 The crime rate in New Orleans has been high for decades too.

    Yeah, the riots in Detroit, Newark, and some other cities started downward slides that they never recovered from. Still, I think Flint, Michigan would be a lot better off, if they hadn’t lost ~80,000 GM jobs over the last two decades, and greater Detroit would be better off if they hadn’t lost hundreds of thousands of jobs.

I like John’s ‘Autoline insights’. One of my favourites in the viewer mail replies from John. Also like the auto show coverage and interviews, even though I don’t always have time to listen/watch them. Maybe your could do a wrap-up of the most important models/news from each show.

    A close friend of mine is a plant manager for Leer. He was moved to Tennessee for a year or so, then again to San Antonio (I believe) to oversee the construction/consolidation of several plant there. He said the biggest obstacle in Tennessee was meth/other drugs and how to ween the workers off them. Texas was a different story. The folks were hard workers, but even at a low wage ($15/hr.), they wouldn’t come to work after getting a couple checks in hand. Many go back to Mexico to be with family.
    No matter where you go, people are people…just different issues.

So to not mention any news that happened more than 24 hours ago would not leave them with anything to report on. The purpose it to offer a brief summary of everything automotive including racing regardless of your particular interest. Its for those people who cannot spend all day on their computer and just want an overview. I like the broad coverage and if its something I want more information on then I can search the internet for more info.

    It may kill the haters to realize it, but Musk is NOT some idiot incompetent Auto CEO. AND Tesla is the ONLY American (100% American, NO cars built in Mexico!) whose US made cars are IMMENSELY Popular the world over.

    I remember the PATHETIC attempts of Caddy to sell their crappy cars in Japan in the 80s and 90s, even after pressure from the US administration. They failed miserably.

    And instead of all americans REJOICING for these TRIUMPHS, you have characters like “joe” who are wasting their lives to find links having something negative to say about this INCREDIBLE, SOLE US Auto Success Story!~

    61 Thanks, took a look. This is not the official run, it only says it has already beaten the Taycan, which is stating the obvious, I am sure before they brought the S in the Ring they had done some runs vs the taycan at a similar location and knew they could beat it.

    The S has not had a major redesign since 2012-13 when it appeared, but still, If I ever get a BEV, and unless some other maker comes out with a better one (especially if not at twice the price!), I’d go for a used S every time, vs a new Model 3. Even in the old country, where streets are narrow and smaller cars are much more practical.

    You are free to check them yourself, if I had to guess, even with 1,000 China sales, the US should have more than that, if the total is 3600. It is a huge market, bigger than Europe or China, for RRs, thanks to our awesome economy and prosperity (not to mention still dirt cheap gas)

    Speaking of gas prices, somebody hit Saudi Oil plants and oil prices jumped 8 bucks yesterday. Fortunately, and thanks to Trump and no thanks to Obama, the US has become the no 1 producer in the world after 80 years again, and if prices rise, this will hurt the big oil importing nations in Europe and esp China, far more than it will hurt the US (if at all)

    I watch as many of the shows as possible. There is no automotive program on the planet more informative than yours.

    A topic I would like to see covered is the ability of power companies to supply the amount electricity that will be needed to charge all these electric vehicles in the future, especially if the government mandates electric vehicles. The power companies are being mandated to increase renewable production which does not increase the output significantly. The term “Leming” comes to mind.

    Wagoner was in the hot seat and had to file for bankruptcy..true. But the right answer is that GM was just too big, too slow to innovate and too bureaucratic to be profitable. Good ol’Ricky was just in the wrong position at the wrong time and not smart enough(impossible task) to know how to reduce GM’s very high fixed costs.

    Ford’s near junk status is temporary and will improve by next year. The status review came when they reduced their line up and before many new models became introduced. Directing their focus towards EV’s was not in consideration. Many feel Ford is moving in the right direction and in a better position than most.

    But we are not talking about these guys are we? we’re talking about Musk. One man doesn’t run a successful company; It takes many who can run with the ball and replacements can only move at a snail’s pace. Unfortunately Musk can’t keep any of the ones needed to make it profitable. And if Tesla doesn’t make profits, it’s doomed to fail at some point.

The agreements were absolutely unacceptable, such as the Iran nuclear deal, and the idiot professional politicians should have been charged with treason.

    The massive theft of intellectual property by the CHinese, who apparently have your professional political class all bought and paid for, ALSO had to be protested, and the ensuing trade war necessary as these characters obviously do not even know what fair trade means. And Trump did that at a risk to his reelection.

    Even the extreme right winger GEORGE SOROS wrote an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, the only SERIOUS and UNBIASED major paper in the USA, quite the opposite of the disgraced NYT and Wash Post, which LAUDS Trump for his stand against the thugs of HUAWEI.

    Out of curiosity I checked my own saved emails for 2018 US sales and ROlls Royce sold 1,080 vehicles just in the US, vs the 1,000 or so in CHina mentioned here earlier. But RR groups the US, Brazil, Canada and Chile as “The Americas”, which still remains by far its biggest market.

    As you’ve said, his trade war will probably hurt other economies more than the US, but a de-stabilized China would not be a good thing for the world, not just for China.
