    John, what you found about the Sonata hybrid mpg readouts is what I suspected. It is similar to my Camry, which has a “current drive” readout, along with two trip readouts. I reset trip 1 for each tank of gas, though, while it sounds like the Sonata has a readout that automatically does that. One thing interesting about my Camry hybrid’s mpg readout, is that it is pretty accurate, only ~2% high for a check of ~10K miles. Both Priuses I had read about 5% high, no doubt deliberately.

    While I wouldn’t be interested in buying one, I’ll probably take a Camry TRD for a test drive, to see what it’s like. From your experience, yep, it sounds like they should offer magnaride, so you have the stiff ride only when you want it. In addition to the stiffer suspension, those 40 series tires would make you feel the pebbles a lot more than with the 205/65R16s on my LE hybrid.

    I heard a while back that the TRD Camrys are all sold out as they are making a somewhat limited number of them. i.e. only a couple per Dealer.

    GM stated previously they can now operate in the US on a smaller market; guess they proved it for now. Well managed.

    For folks who complain about CEO pay, just take a look at Tesla. And yes I know its shares. But still its a ridiculous amount of money.

    SavageGeese reviewer on YouTube shared sinlliar experience with Toyota TRD is not making the Camry or Avalon a sports sedan. The torque is low and after the 1-2 shift puts the rpms low in the bottom of 2nd gear is not athletic.

    C and D had a generally positive review of the Camry TRD, but it turns out that the car has a major downgrade relative to other Camries, no fold down rear seat, because of a stiffening thing back there.

    re: Toyota Camry TRD

    Too much “surface excitement”, as the Japanese refer to it, for my tastes. I think highly styled cars tend to look dated more quickly than the more understated designs.

    I’m thinking all they would have to do to that Camry is switch it to premium fuel and remap the computer a bit. Easily wring our another 20 horse with minimal fuss.

    6 They could get another 20 hp by tuning it for premium, but that would increase fuel cost about 30%, at least where I am, and you’d barely feel the difference in power. They could supercharge it, though, as in the Lotus Evora, and get 410 hp, which you’d definitely feel. I don’t know that Toyota has Honda’s skill at making high powered front drivers work well, though, and it would be a rather pricey Camry. They now sell 4wd Camrys, but 4 cylinder only, which probably means the system wouldn’t be suitable for even the current V6, never mind one with 400+ hp.

    3 I don’t know why they’d gear it that way, but the 1-2 gap is huge, 73%, so no wonder the engine “falls on its face” after the 1-2 shift.

    Camry TRD is not for me, no added HP makes it a poser. It’s the car mom would get if the teen child insists it looks cool.

    Sandy Munro and team has been disassembling and analyzing a Tesla Model Y. In this video, he took a second one on the highway and says very nice things about it. Things that only someone who has torn one down to the bare metal could also appreciate.

    I fully expected this and posted here to that effect. BEV market share this year and probably next one will Skyrocket. The above being the UK, of course, there would be a few patriotic (or idiotic) buyers who would choose the vastly inferior Jag over similarly priced Teslas.

    Seriously, John? The only thing the NASCAR “Camry” has in common with the production “Camry” is its exterior styling, and not much of that either.

    Why not the Camry? Fir starters, it’s a FWD. Real cars are RWD, and especially real PERFORMANCE cars can never be FWD.

    Second, the Camry is too big to be a sports car, seriously. They would be far better off continuing with the CELICA, a smaller-than-corolla vehicle, make sure it is RWD, and make THAT a sporty car.

    How many among Camry buyers give a rat’s ass that a sports version exists? This is NOT why they buy Camrys. Even Accord buyers would be far more interested in a sporty Accord than Camry buyers in a sporty Camry. If not, they are really confused.

    Important point, and to my knowledge, Munro seems to be the ONLY person who has done that, AND published their findings.

    Not that the Tesla Haters that do hit- and runs here every month or so would ever appreciate or learn anything from this.

    13. There are some smaller front drive performance cars that work pretty well, though one of them, the Civic type R, looks really silly.

    As Bradley Cross said in #2, there are enough people wanting sporty looking Camrys, that it was probably worth their making the ~6000 TRDs I read were being produced. It wouldn’t have cost much to make them. Maybe they should do a Kyle Busch special, like Chevy did a Jeff Gordon special a while back.

    BTW, Toyota is selling a smaller, RWD sports car, called Supra. Yeah, we all know it is mechanically BMW and it looks funny. If they revived the Celica name, it would most likely be with a front driver. The last 3 or 4 generations of Celicas were front drive, with a few 4wd versions.

    14. I don’t know how much of it they do now, but at one time, GM bought competitors’ cars and disassembled them to see what they could learn. Before tearing them down, they sometimes had “ride and drive” events, so people could see what the competitors’ cars were like. I went to one of those at Milford, I think in the mid ’90s.

    Whenever you hear a manufacturer say that they’ve “bench marked” this car or that, in the development of theirs, they have purchased/tested/observed (and tore it down) to see how things work (and don’t work).
