    Part of the reason Fit, Civic Coupe, and, especially, manual Accords didn’t sell, was that you couldn’t buy one, even if you wanted to. I drive through the local Toyota/Honda dealer about every Sunday, when there are no sales people to bother me, to see what cars they have. Over the last two months, there have been zero Fits, and one Civic Coupe on the lot. Of course, there hasn’t been a manual Accord in years. Ford wouldn’t sell so many F-150s if there weren’t any at the dealers for sale, and they would all but refuse to order one for you, even if you didn’t mind a 6 week wait.

    Being a staunch manual transmission driver I am saddened to see manual’s going the way of the dinosaur. I own 3 Ford Ranger 5 speeds and will drive them until the fall into the ground. I also have complete clutch assemblies and flywheels in case they go by the wayside,too.

    More on manuals. I remember when Ford introduced the Transit Connect at our Auto Show. The two they had were both manuals. I ordered one the next day. Then a few weeks later my dealer called to say that Ford was not building manuals for the US market. I went and got my deposit back. What a teaser that was for me and many other manual drivers.

    That Ford 1400 screech was like nails on a chalkboard to me. No doubt we will continue to see more EV powertrains for racing and I assume along with that shorter races so they can do it on a single charge.

    With gas hanging in the $2-$2.50 range the small car sales will continue to slump. Will also make EV attraction harder. Maybe that’s how they plan to stir up sales. Get all these big SUVs in every home then double gas prices and watch people struggle to get into a more efficient vehicle.

    2. It looks like there isn’t even one manual transmission pickup sold in the U.S. any more, unless you can still get one with the “HD” Ram diesel. The Colorado/Canyon started out with a manual available with the base engine, but from the EPA site, it looks like the manual is gone for 2020 model year. Also, no manual is shown for Tacoma and Frontier. Of course, the new Ranger has the turbo 4/automatic as the only powertrain.

    You should be able to keep your old Rangers going as long as you want to, as long as you avoid road salt and crashes.

    3. I ordered my manual transmission 2.5 turbo Dodge Caravan in 1989, and still have it. Even then, probably very few dealers would stock a van with the manual. The base 4 was available for a number of years in the US, into the ’90s, and the turbo only two years, ’89 and ’90.

    Did you see the manual Transit Connects at a show in the US?That’s strange that they would have them, when they probably had no intent of ever selling them in the US.

    Question concerning EV’s:

    Does there exist some sort of Quick-Charge Battery Pack that can be kept in one’s trunk? Something with just enough charge to get the car an extra 30/40/50 miles? I wouldn’t think that’d be hard to do, since there are already portable jump-starters for ICE’s.

    The CT5-Blackwing set to launch next summer as probably a 2022 will have a manual (I don’t know about the CT4-Blackwing but maybe that one too). If they are ‘stellar’ like the CTS/ATS-V’s were/are and have the manual they should become collector’s items (as some of the last manuals produced).

    One thing I didn’t hear in the report on the Mustang 1400 – Range. I’ve heard of a 1200HP EV that had an average 20 minute drive time, 10 if you really hammered it. So, just wondering if there’s a time or range number available on this 1400 behemoth.

    1 NONSENSE. If the two door Civic or accord (BOTH of whom I owned for decades) were popular enough, I am sure Honda is not a Moron, they would have them available. Same with the Fit, which sells vewry well in its TARGET markets. The Fit was NOT designed with the US market in mind. Over in Europe, NOBODY buys Accords or Camrys, but ECVERYbody buys Civics and Corollas and YARISES AND Fits, for GOOD REASONS which I wasted my time MANY TIMES explaining here, and obviously when you plug your ears to them you will keep complaining with NO reason.

    After all, VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET.

    You bought a CAMRY, NOT a FIT or a Bolt or even a VOLT (right, the VOLT where you can not list for the 101th time the excuses about charging and all that, and which has zero range anxiety).

    COn’d both my Honda 2 doors (the tiny Civic hatch and the modest but high quality 1990 Accord coupe, were manuals. In fact I had owned NO automatics for the first 30 or 35 years I was driving, until I got the 740iL used in 2005 (so obviously I had no choice, and in the US it was not offered with a manual ANYWAY).

    TWO big problems with owning manuals are 1. If you buy them used, there will not be many available close to you, and 2. When you try to SELL them, the little old ladies and other auto illliterates who cannot even drive a car with three pedals, AND the commuters who are not masochists to drive a manual in heavy traffic all day long, will never buy them.

    years ago, you could save thousands of $ by choosing the manual, AND you got better MPG. This has VANISHED today, no discount, AND todays automatics and automanuals are 1000% Better than the dinosaur 3 and 4 sp autos of the past, so you get NO MPG benefit either.

    SO if those low-volume choices were profitable, I am SURE Honda and TOyota would still offer them here today, but obviously they are NOT.

    Dealers make it difficult to buy anything not loaded with options. My neighbor was told he could not get a Mustang GT V8 with a manual even though Fords website says you can. Our local Ford dealers only have $45K Mustangs and $53K Explorers. Loaded is all they stock.

    Yes, I bought a Camry hybrid, but if i’d had the chance to drive an Accord manual, I might have really liked it, and bought one.

    10. You are right that you no longer save gas with a manual, and in many cases of the few manuals available, the automatics have better EPA numbers. As far as real world mpg, my experience has been that I usually do better relative to the EPA city numbers with a manual than an automatic, but most of the time, I make it a point to drive for good mileage.

    As far as price of the car new, that depends. An automatic costs about $3K extra in a Porsche Cayman, but the last I knew, an automatic and manual were the same price in a BMW 2 series. As I remember, the manual was about $1K cheaper than an automatic in my 2010 Mini.

    11. They make Mustang GTs with manuals, but your neighbor would have had to order one. I suppose a few of the largest dealers might stock one or two, but most do not. A friend wanted a Mustang turbo 4 manual a couple years ago, and ended up getting one by dealer trade, but few dealers stock those either.

    A good thing about Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers, is that you can order one exactly as you want, within what the web sites show, and get it in about 6 weeks. Well, you could a year ago. That might be different now, with the plants probably still not running “normally.”

    I just checked inventory of the local Ford dealer, and to my surprise, they have a manual transmission Mustang, a 2019 GT350. I thought people were waiting in line to buy those, but I guess not. $66K+ is a lot of money for a Mustang, but I’m still surprised that have one, unsold, that is a couple months from being two model years old.

    #7 – “Quick-Charge Battery Pack that can be kept in one’s trunk?” There is the BMW i3-REx that has a 650 cc, two cylinder motorcycle engine that drives a generator. There is no mechanical connection between the engine and wheels. Our 2014 version sustains 70 mph at ~39-40 MPG on a 1.9-2.3 gallon tank of Plus or Premium and good for 78-92 miles.

    The Mustang Mach-E 1400 would be a great Pike’s Peak challenger. It would probably do OK on the Nürburgring. It could be the leading lap car and signal “the start” by burning rubber around the track.

    Everyone should have an EV Supercar if nothing else to show they’ve got more engineering than ‘PowerPoint’ procurement ordering parts to make a hateful compliance ‘golf cart.’

    EV Supercars do not have be affordable with large production runs. They just have to be awesome on the track.

    16 I never understood why none of the automakers would make a hybrid with a diesel generator like your BMW. Something Diesels are really good at which is high torque constant RPM and with less fuel they could power an onboard generator probably more efficiently than gas.

    18. I’ve read a little about that over the years, and the same reasons always came up. Diesels are more expensive to make. They are dirtier. Also, by using the Atkinson Cycle valve tuning on gas engines, they reduce the efficiency difference between gas and diesel. Then, generally a diesel is bigger and heavier than a gas engine of similar power. What I’m talking about applies more to regular hybrids which vary engine speed, than something like the i3 REx.

    With the i3 REx, I suspect the small size and weight of the scooter engine is why they used that particular engine, plus they already had the engine, which probably needs very little modification to run a generator. If I were in the market for a mega scooter now, it would probably be the C 650 GT, which the REx engine was borrowed from. Unless my Honda SilverWing blows up, though, I’ll probably never replace it.

    Dealerships can be obstinate idiots. Back in 2003, when shopping the Ford Crown Victoria LX Sport, I checked the local Mercury dealership in Houston and found they had TEN Mercury Marauders on the lot.

    The LX Sport was around $25k and the MSRP on the Marauder was just shy of $34k. I called and offered them $30k, straight up for one and they laughed. “It’s a Marauder!” So I bought the Vic. They had those ten Marauders for most of the rest of that year.

    I’m sure that with floorplan, they didn’t make any more money than if they’d sold me one for $30k.

    I wager that 2019 Mustang is like that for that dealership. Also, 95% of the potential buyers don’t know how to drive a stick.

    20. Maybe they are still trying to get MSRP plus $5K for the Mustang. Maybe I’ll offer them $50K, and see what they say, not that I need another car. Well, I don’t think that would be a problem. They wouldn’t take the $50K, or they wouldn’t still have the car.

    Re: manual transmission. According to a search in Autotrader: within 50 miles of my zip (48185) there are 385 new BMWs listed for sale. Everyone is an automatic. Whatever happened to “The Ultimate Driving Machine?” Not exactly “Joy” either.

    24. I just read in a Car and Driver article, that for 2021, some versions of the 2 series will be the only BMWs that you can even order with a manual in the U.S.. Some versions of the outgoing 4 series offer a manual, but they won’t in 2021. Both the 4 and 6 cylinder versions of the supposedly sporty Z4 are automatic only in the U.S.

DO you know why or do I have to produce the Stats again, by the Dealers own admission, NADA stats about where they made their $ from in the last 10 years (new cars, used cars, or service?).

    27. As I’ve said before, I like small engine cars, like Minis with manuals, and big engine cars, like Corvettes with automatics. If I bought a Porsche Cayman or Boxster, with a 2.0 or 2.5 turbo four, it would be a manual, even though the dual clutch automatic clearly performs better. I’m not racing anyone. No, paddle shift thingies for automatics are remotely like a manual, where skill is involved in driving smoothly, and using the right gear at the right time, either for mpg or for performance, depending on the occasion.

    28. “Larry,” F1 cars don’t go around in circles. They drive on courses with multiple turns in both directions, most on permanent courses, but some on city streets, like Monaco. Today’s F1 cars have sequential transmissions that are shifted manually, but without clutch pedals. There is no argument here that, for pure performance, most of today’s automatics are better than manuals, and race cars like F1, and probably Indy cars use two pedal, but manually shifted transmissions. The race cars would probably be completely automatic, but the rules don’t allow that, to inject an additional skill for the drivers to deal with. For driving fun, for some of us, three pedal manuals are a good thing.

    I too really enjoy driving a manual and my CTSV was. Which if I were to buy another one I would get the Auto. Only because I understand what you mean Kit as the cars with very large engines and power don’t require as much skill to drive fast. I had enough torque to start in 3rd gear if I wanted too, and down shifting in a corner was not as near important when you can break the tires loose if your in 2nd or 3rd gear. The smaller engine cars really need the proper gear selected to get the power to the ground and it just gives you that feeling that your getting the best performance you can when pushing it hard.

    But I’m guessing the smart phone is also partially to blame for the reduction in manuals. Its really hard to drive, text, drink your coffee and shift. But no one does that right?

    I think that the death of the manual is more about the lack of training in driving schools for new drivers. A few driving schools have them and you really have to seek them out and generally pay extra for that privilege. Most are automatic only. This has been true for decades. Most new drivers today have never even seen a manual transmission because their parents likely never drove a manual transmission either.

    From the practical perspective though…Today’s automatics upshift and downshift faster then a manual. They get better fuel economy than a manual. They also have lower emissions than a manual. Most have the paddle shift options to manually shift yourself if you want and some even have rev matching. They are also smoother to drive on the highway as you can program in a deceleration delay with an automatic so that if you are the type to have variable pressure on the throttle, you won’t be constantly reducing and increasing speed…if driving without cruise. There really is no downside from a technical perspective to driving a car with a modern automatic transmission. The manual however gives an emotional connection for the driving enthusiast that an automatic just doesn’t give.

    Due to that emotional connection I think a manual makes sense in enthusiast cars like a Corvette, Porsche, Civic Type R, Mustang, Camaro, Challenger or similar vehicle. A vehicle where an enthusiast is likely to own it and desire that emotional connection to their vehicle. A base model civic 2 door commuter car with a 1.5L engine…Not so much.

    35. I haven’t driven a recent one, but I suspect I’d like driving a 1.5t Civic with a manual. Everything I read about them indicates that the shifting is very slick, almost definitely better than my 2010 Mini, which is pretty good, and the Civic has more power. My manual van is fun, mainly because it is “different.” The shift quality is not very good, at least by today’s standards.

    I completely agree that, given today’s automatics, the appeal of manuals is completely “emotional connection.”
