    EV sales in California down and this certainly would affect Tesla. So Model Y taking sales from the 3 doesn’t really matter. The overall sales are down and should concern all EV manufacturers. Has Cali reached saturation point and will sales continue to decline or is this just a blip on the screen?

    Having worked for Magna over 13 years its sad to see Don Walker go we wish him well.

    It seems that Tesla sales are down in most markets. Probably because the pent-up demand for the Model 3 has dissipated and it is now finding its natural sales level. The same will be true for the Model Y soon. Not a knock on Tesla, just an expected sales curve when introducing new models.

    #2 No subsidy probably doesn’t help either. It doesn’t matter how something is or how much people want it if they can’t afford it.

    Tesla’s less discussed journey to mainstream:
    1. No dealers (intermediary profiteering)
    2. Eliminate free charging
    3. Delete return policy (which was a feature to compensate for dealership absence)
    4. Price adjustments to fit competitive landscape, make cheaper batteries (now)

    Predictions for future moves:
    5. Tweak models to delete quirky features such as troublesome door handles actuators and door mechanisms (MX), make cars cheaper to repair
    6. Offer competitive insurance policies
    7. Offer competitive leasing and financing terms
    8. Offer reasonable trade-in values
    9. Stop the crazy upcharge for silly options such as colors and autopilot
    In summary I think they have lots of room to grow, they just need to expect parity with common industry practices.

    I also wonder how many vehicles are purchased in Cali but registered in other states. States that maybe do not allow sales due to not having dealerships. Elon should bite the bullet and partner with a distributor or even use the business model that Elio was going to use. Go through Goodyear, Tireman, or Pepboys and use them as dealerships to allow the sales and pick up of Teslas in those states.

    Maybe the EV market is starting to get saturated for people wanting a $50K+ commuter car. Even that market is limited to those with a house in the suburbs with a garage with power. Most apartment and condo dwellers in the US have no place to charge an EV. No progress has been made on that at my condo in the last 7 months.

    Anybody else think that Maybach looks like a minivan when viewing it from the side? I’m sure that wasn’t the intended look.

    I’m not a fan of minivans but the sure are practical. They get better mileage than suvs, cost less and more cargo room than many, and have a large sliding door. Just not my cup of tea.

    Holography displays improve safety, just like all the many add-on’s. Why not be an attentive driver instead? I can’t imagine how much it costs to fix/ replace many of these unwanted devices! And, imagine again, how more reliable and less expensive an auto would be with less distractions. Let’s not forget…. more fun to drive and to control.

    Having red symbols pop onto my windshield to point out bicycles and cross traffic would really annoy me. I can see those things. If I am distracted, I won’t see the red symbols either. This seems like a gee whiz innovation that really won’t improve safety, and could prove to be an annoying distraction to drivers trying to watch the road. I would not check the option box for this feature.

    The Mayback really struck me as having Soviet styling from 30 years ago. Yes, the side view is kinda minivanny and chunky. The large D pillar with the logo makes it look very heavy. Kind of like a 2001 Land Cruiser that someone put a bad custom grille on.

    The Maybach SUV screams “Buick!!!” from the front. It’s primarily the grille.

    Maybe most people who wanted a BEV and could afford to buy one at current prices have done so. Perhaps Sandy Munro is onto something with these BEV 3-wheelers running Tesla components. Bring the price point down to a broader market and help mainstream the technology.

    The difference with the Bentayga, the original Continental GT, Flying Spur, Ghost and Phantom, while they may have had donor platforms, their makers did a deep dive to separate their high end offerming from its humble bones. While this vehicle may have begun life much higher up the food chain, this Maybach does not even pretend to hide where its origins began, with GLS even in its name! It just comes off as a high priced trim level and not something truly special. While some have complained about AMG losing some of its magic, at least there is discernible substance to having a Mercedes with a AMG label on it. It’s hard to see and appreciate the Mercedes-Maybach GLS600 as real competition to the DBX, Bentayga and the Cullinan. The top of the line Ranger Rover? Maybe, but that maybe more of an apples to oranges comparison. With the RR being the one that it’s owner could/would take seriously off road and, while I wouldn’t doubt this GLS’s off road credentials, taking a Maybach off roading even sounds silly!

    In case you wonder if GM can bring out a far more ridiculous $100K+ Vehicle than the Escalade, as Obama would say, yes she can, and she DID.

    THe UTTERLY ridiculous BEV Hummer will sell for that and more. Obviously, GM does Not WANT to sell many, as it probably is still losing $20-50k on each one, even at that price. Ask Bob Lutz for details.

    As for Tesla sales in CA down a very MODEST 13% JUST for the quarter, many here jumped on it immediately, as if it was some kind of big TREND. OF COURSE it is not.

    CA is already SATURATED with Teslas, half of its sales are there.

    28 other states, maybe 27 now that MI can have Tesla Stores, do Not even ALLOW Tesla to sell cars to those who WANT THem.

    SO do not be RIDICULOUS. There is Still HUGE potential for BEVs in the US, AND every day things get BETTER, NOT WORSE< for BEVS in EVERY RESPECT. THINK about the various ways.

    BUT as I said many times, the really BIG and HIGH GROWTH BEV markets are CHINA (ALREADY!) anf EUROPE.

    You can see this in the news today. WHY did Honda abandon its diesels? I read the other day that FRANCE DROPPED the incentives it had for diesels for DECADES, as their policy now, across the 27 EU states and even more in OTHERS, like NORWAY, is to go BEV FULL SPEED AHEAD.

    So your wishful thinking only AMUSES those WITH a clue.

    The Hummer BEV is the launch edition @ 112k; this is the fully loaded version. Not cheap, but fully equipped (including Super-cruise); lesser equipped Hummers to follow (though still not cheap). It will be interesting on what the take-rate will be but this will be GM’s “halo” electric truck offering. It certainly looks capable on and off road so GM is certainly looking to take a ‘big bite’ for the (well healed) off-road crowd. Quick take from TFL, here, if you want the link:

    19 Interesting video. That is about the ultimate “bragging rights” vehicle, with all of that off-road capability that no one will use. I doubt if there is much charging available in the boonies of Utah, etc. Still, there’s a lot of technology there with the four wheel steering, trick suspension, etc.

    Is Tesla’s California sales decline a reflection of closed offices/tech campuses, etc. due to the pandemic? Who needs an expensive electric commuter vehicle if he/she isn’t commuting, has moved to Idaho and is working remotely, etc.? Silicon Valley is experiencing a huge exodus of workers who are relocating outside of California – because they can.

    22 Good point as there are still many folks working from home and probably unsure of the immediate future. If everything gets shut down again buying a new vehicle will seem like a bad decision.
    Although LArri cant seem to follow the conversation when people are here talking about Cali sales being down and how that also affects US BEV sales not other countries like France, as they continue to see increases. Even if that number is inflated by mandates, subsidies, or tax breaks. The article was specifically about California.

Man that sounds like people are interested even at the 100+k price tag. Looks like GM may have a reason for the cybertruck to be worried. BTW clueless Larry Bob Lutz hasn’t worked for GM since 2011 So just keep regurgitating his comments from back when he was relevant.


    23) When I now scan the comments I look for ones with a sprinkling of all caps words and immediately skip it. There is never anything of value/substance in the comment so why waste my time reading it? They are all usually something along the lines of: TESLA is Awesome sauce, Lutz said something 20 years ago, Everyone is stupid, Elon Musk is the Mesiah, Sandy Munro said something that validated my confirmation bias, I drive an old crappy diesel but my neighbors have nice cars, blah blah blah.

    I’ve always maintained that when the big auto companies decide to compete with Tesla, Tesla would decline. There was way too much hype and false stories with Tesla. The day of serious competition is now at hand. Good luck Tesla. No more free passes and now you’ll have to compete with equal footing with the big boys. Maybe now the stock will come down to a realistic value.

    I set the wayback machine in my head to about 1980 and substituted “Apple” for “Tesla” and “big boys” with “IBM” and you know what? It sounded EXACTLY the same!

    I don’t remember when “get a horse” was the height of wit, but I’ve read enough to know that the mass produced automobile was a massive paradigm shift for humanity.

    I did live through the introduction of the microprocessor paradigm shift and the parade of smoke-blackened altars of “IBM”, “Morrow”, “Osborne” and “Microsoft” that lead up to today.

    Now we’re experiencing the confluence of those previous paradigm shifts and nobody can state who the exact winners and losers will be.

    Who, at the time, would’ve seen the Ford, IBM, an Microsoft of today as mere multi-billion dollar multinational corporations instead of the hegemonic, globe-straddling behemoths that no one could imagine competing against?

    I don’t think we’ll be able to pick winners and losers until the last round is over. I do think that Tesla has several advantages against the other “players” that have been discussed to death here. It’s probably too late for Tesla to pull an Osborne, but you never know. It’s possible that BorgWarner and Ford have the answer for BEVs: commodify the powertrain.

    Don’t know, but it’s certainly a frothy mixture at present.

    27 Commodifying the powertrain, as BorgWarner/Delphi will be doing, certainly sounds like a game changer to me. If what the come up with is competitive with what others have, it will make doing an EV just a matter of packaging batteries, if you are already making cars.

    A coachbuilder renaissance? I guess crashworthiness would be a constraint on that unless it was baked mostly into the commodity platform.
