    I never paid much attention to where I put my hands on the wheel until the discussions here. I find my left hand at 12:00 a lot. Probably from driving stick shifts for so many years. A yoke works for F-1 and Indy cars that don’t have a shifter and they don’t make sharp turns into a parking spot. They don’t have a cup of coffee in the cup holder either.

    Perhaps Administrations shouldn’t be allowed to declare certain things, i.e., here, the emissions standards. I’m not against them but they should be assigned and approved by a higher authority so subsequent administrations can’t change them mid-stream. If you give the auto-makers a goal, fine; but don’t change the rules before they can accomplish said goal. (Or maybe they’re offering the private sector the same way they do business; wasting money spent by changing goals, moving targets and or throwing money good after bad by moving emphasis elsewhere. Yeah, that’s sarcasm).

    Biden same as obamy are going to destroy car industries by raising prices out of reach of the working public they say they care about but never do show it. Picking electric cars that I shouldn’t have to subsidize for anybody is plain wrong let the market decide as it should be

    Sean You may not be old enough to appreciate the advantage of a union. Many companies have stepped up and treat employees pretty fairly now. That wasn’t always the case and unions have their pros, cons and corruption. However without that threat, there is no doubt workers would not be treated so well. So although the need for them has changed from getting fair treatment to protecting that aspect, they are still needed.

    So should that matter when it comes to BEV incentives? No! but you can bet the UAW is funneling money to certain politicians to make that part of that bill. Again flexing the power of being united.
    I don’t look at it as penalizing non-union workers as much as penalizing the non-union manufacturer. Which I’m sure is what the union is after. Get others to see the advantage and sign up to get more members. Will it actually work? Time will tell.

    Toyota is worried about the fuel used in the ships carrying hydrogen, but will make the hydrogen with brown coal, the worst (but cheapest) coal Australia mines. Just another mind-f**t from the biggest car company in the world. They think there’s no such thing as global warming and if there is, they have no intention of helping.

    4 I agree as that should be something left to the EPA. Negotiate with manufacturers to what is actually achievable and makes sense. Even if they have to push a bit it shouldn’t matter whos in the white house. The EPA should be doing what it can to make a difference no matter whos in charge.

    It will be interesting to see what the CR people think of Tesla’s yoke, after they get used to it, but I know already that I would never like it. I put my hands different places on a round steering wheel. Unlike with an F1 car, or flying an airplane, I sometimes turn the wheel a lot farther than ~90 degrees in each direction. Replacing the turn signal lever with touch sensitive buttons should not even be legal. It’s bad enough that car companies are coming up with all of these non-standard automatic transmission controls, but non-standard turn signal controls are ridiculous. A lot of people don’t use turn signals already, and Tesla will make that worse, including signaling the wrong direction.

    6) I agree with your thoughts of unionization.
    I’m pretty sure the UAW has gotten the message and will soon rid itself of the “good ol”boys club.” At the end of October, each and every UAW member has an opportunity to change the method of electing members of the IEB (International Election Board) by a “direct election” system. If this passes, the workers will not elect delegates to represent them any longer, but cast worker votes directly.
    This might encourage others to unionize.

    I don’t think new emission standards should be mandated without leaving business some time to prepare.

    That said, it’s not clear to me what those new standards entail.

    If they’re fleet wide, then I don’t see much of a problem: it would amount to the progression of electrification we can already observe.

    The upscale Tundra’s interior looks pretty sophisticated. But they should lose the grill taken from Komatsu’s parts bin.

    Using coal to make hydrogen produces CO2. So they just failed their “completely “clean” supply chain”. Also, no mention on what power source they are using to compress the hydrogen.

    5 – not to get political, but vehicle prices rose at an unprecedented rate while the Trump administration was in charge.

    In the near future, we will be seeing many more mid-priced and low-priced EVs as component pricing falls with increased volumes of production. Despite the short-term headwinds of chip and other shortages, this is bound to happen and will likely provide a selection of vehicles that are less expensive than comparable ICE vehicles of today.


    I agree with Honda. The requirement should be vehicles produced in US factories with a minimum US content. Maybe that minimum is 75% or something else, but it should not be tied to unions. In this way the rules work for all Americans instead of further dividing up the country.

    #4 Perhaps Auto companies should not come running to the govts when they get into financial trouble, also Toyota is now begging for relief from both the Japanese and Amercan governments because they are behind in BEV developments and manufacturing, but Toyota has millions to throw into Foolcells , aka FCVs that nobody wants.
    The Europeans and the Chinese are planning their future , one that will have almost no cars that use Fossils or very little of it, should America and Japan march to a different drummer?

    The yoke is a joke. Why should we have to get used to it? If its an improvement, it should not require retraining the way we prefer to drive. I would like to know what the lock-to-lock distance is on the yoke. As Kit said, we frequently turn the wheel more than 90 degrees in low speed driving. If the lock-to-lock has been reduced to only 180 degrees, THAT will take a lot of getting used to!

    15 – Reylon, I am very sure that Toyota would not be building an assembly line to produce fuel cells if no one wanted them. Ditto for Cummins. Ditto for Daimler Trucks. Not to mention numerous shipbuilders that see the advantages of fuel cells.

    Elon is a heck of a salesman, and I don’t think any of us should be surprised that he is knocking the technology of a product he doesn’t produce and sees as a threat. Can’t sell what you don’t have.

    #5 Auto industries that don’t adapt to change will put themselves out of business, no help needed from any govt to push them in that direction, companies that think of their future and ” move @ the speed of thought ” – Sandy Munro will prosper, That is why Tesla / TSLA is a $700 Billion dollar company , and why F and GM are $13 and $48+ Billion Stock companies, one invest in their future of cars and renewables ,the others invest in yesterday’s technology,ICE powered Fossil burners.

    #17 GM vet Toyota should be investing and making GREEN Hydrogen fuel and their dispensers like Tesla is, investing in Solar and SCharging infrastructure then Foolcells will takeoff like a rocket. Hydrogen and FCV s are a Rube Goldberg contraption, you will never get back that Energy wasted in producing Hydrogen,Physics dont lie, unless your name is Trevor Milton.

    @5: fully agree with you on abolishing subsidies. That includes in my book the subsidies to the oil and gas sector such as tax breaks, bail-outs when the market drops, and so on. If those are left in place, subsidies to the EV sector are fine provided the subsidies level the playing field. Better is to get rid of all props and let the free market do the work.

    Subsidies or grants should always be a level playing field ,no favoritism, I see that this may be challenged in court or there could be retaliation via trade country by country, Germany Big 3 for one, as they have plants Stateside, how that could work is anybody guess.

    #22GM vet, Tesla Shanghai exports are mainly Europe bound as Giga Berlin is tied up in permit and regulations, Fremont has a waiting list up the wazoo, ’til Feb for cheaper mod Y and 3 …mod Y will end up being the most popular car in numbers ,in the near future,Stateside ICE or BEV Giga Texas will be cranking them by the hundreds of thousands / year, just see that huge factory in Texas , 3 Floor levels one Kilometer long,at leSt 4 Megacast Machines with a 5th on order for the CYBRTRK(if its not already there).

    #17 GM vet, if you really believe Toyota or Honda or Hyundai has a hope in hell in selling their Hydrogen powered cars,why don’t to get one? They come with the fuel “Free” for the term of the lease @ least the Mirai does, and it is a Lexus level quality of car, Toyota practically gives it away, the lease anyway.

    29 2014-2018 would be 60% Obama and 40% Trump, if 2018 is “inclusive.” #30, 2020 and 2021, so far, would be a majority Trump. Of course, all of it is mostly supply and demand. 2014-2018 saw dealer lots overflowing with cars, but between production losses due to covid and chip shortages, lots are now empty, and people are waiting in line to buy cars. That runs up prices.

    The Biden (and former Obama) emission rules are meant to force the market into EVs. While I agree with the goal, the method and timing are completely irresponsible. The electric grid and recharging infrastructure are a couple of decades behind.

    For example, I spent last week in Seattle. I saw a lot of HEVs, PHEVs, and EVs. But most vehicles are parked on the streets, with no access to overnight charging. Seattle is investing in a new light rail system. I didn’t observe an investment in curbside charging.

    Regarding unions – yes, there was a time for them (80 years ago!). Today, companies are much more sensitive about their employees due to many reasons – corporate citizenship, legal (e.g., OSHA), costs (turnover, health care, etc.), and training/retention (the internet will quickly throw “shade” which may hurt business sales and future hiring efforts). Bottom line, the only type of union that makes any sense today is a professional union, whose sole purpose is to maintain/improve technical/educational skills.

    33 lol Yeah Ok.. Obama was in office 8 years so if you start in 2008 when he did you’d see a 6.16% increase or 0.77% each year average. Meanwhile after the 2016 election the next 4 years saw a 0.2% increase total or 0.05% each year. So you can pick the few years you like but right smack dab in the middle of Obamas running things 2011 we saw a huge 2.99% increase. Almost as high as we are seeing now with the covid shortages and shutdowns. That’s 100% Obama.

    35 I suspect you’d find that the increase ~2011 had a lot more to do with the shift in the market from cars to more expensive trucks/SUVs than who was president, except that the economy was recovering, resulting in people generally buying more expensive vehicles.

    #34 & others – While I spent 48 years working prior to becoming gainfully unemployed, was never a member of a union, & railed against some of the inefficient work rules, I believe they do have their place. In fact, I believe that if not for unions, I would not have received vacation time, holidays, & compensation I received over the years.

    That being said the UAW executives that have totally failed their union membership over the last few years is inexcusable.

    37 While I was non-union salary at GM, I benefited from the UAW in vacation, health care, and retirement benefits. The company had to match what the UAW workers got for salary people.

    37 Same here. I was never part of a union personally but worked in union shops and am familiar with the totally wasteful arrangements that were agreed upon. However I also benefited from the vacation/holidays and some benefits that the union got.
    Money breeds corruption and with anything the union was no different. Too bad cause it makes the case easier for people to avoid one.
