    A vehicle getting about 30 mpg, and gas at $3.80 is like 12.6 cents per mile. Solar panels that give you 2 miles of range per day at $1600 means the payback is just 12,698 days or 34 years, and thats assuming you get sunlight every day. Seems like a bad investment to me.

    1 Sorry messed up the math thats per mile and you get 2 so its actually half that amount Pay back on the solar panels would be 17.4 years.

    2) That is the payback even on home solar. At the point that it has paid for itself, you have to replace the panels LOL

    The NSX had $30,000 cash on the hood and they still couldn’t sell what they produced for the year until the final year of production.

    @2,3 this seems like an impractical application. This abysmal pay back only happens when the vehicle is parked outside in sunlight. Many vehicles are in parking structures, at home in garages, in shaded spots, and so on. I always try to avoid parking my vehicle in bright sunlight. Don’t want the heat in my car, don’t want the wear of my paint, of my interior.

    @Autoline team: many nice vehicles shown today: the electric Genesis, the 500e, the robocabs, the Toyotas and the Fisker.

    4 Even with the $30K rebate, and NSX costs more than twice as much as a C8 Corvette, and is barely faster. There is still a long wait for a C8, though, but you can probably get an NSX quickly. Also, the NSX gets better city gas mileage.

    I always rented from Silvercar at the Phoenix airport. No lines, no hassles. They had their own location and someone would meet you when you got off the shuttle. Scan the QR code in the windshield and go. Fully equipped Audis with GPS, SXM radio and a free child seat, if needed. Then they closed all their airport locations. Now you have to go to an Audi dealer. It makes no sense to pay for a ride to the dealer in town where I was going in the first place. No, thank you.

    8 For a few years, I’ve just used Uber, or trains when available, to get from airports to downtown areas, but Silvercar sounds useful to get an extended test drive in an Audi, if they have the one available that you’re interested in.

    5 I agree. There isn’t enough roof on a car to make the solar panels very useful, and I normally have my car in a garage when not being driven. Solar panels on the garage would be more useful.

    The only time that a solar powered accessory made any sense to me was the tiny solar powered interior cooling fan system that helped people who had to park their car in the sun vent some of the hot air that would accumulate. You could keep your car locked, windows closed, and get a little relief but I supposed a windshield shade might help even more.

    5 Valid point as most RV’s realize. Many make the mistake of installing solar panels on the roof of their RV, then when they get to the campground try and find the nice shady place to park to avoid overworking the A/C. Hence limiting the ability of the solar panels. I always figured if I was going to invest in them I would get the suitcase type that you can set in direct sunlight aim them and still park in the shade. Same would apply for a car. I cant see that $1600 option being worth it at all.

    A guy I know has home built an RV in a Promaster van, with solar panels. He uses the panels to charge a bunch of batteries in the van, and figures on the panels charging the batteries while driving and parked at rest stops, etc., with enough battery to be useful when in the shade at camp grounds.
