It’s a very special After Hours this week as we come to you live from the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise. Yes, yes, we know. The Dream Cruise doesn’t start until Saturday, but you sure wouldn’t know it from the look of our parking lot at the Auto Zone and the classic cars rolling down M-1. We’re joined by some of the regulars–Peter De Lorenzo, David Welch, Jim Hall–as well as some surprise guests. Ed Welburn, VP of GM Global Design, stops by with his treasured ’69 Camaro. Robert Gelardi, designer of the 2010 Mustang, pays us a visit bringing his very own classic Ford. Jim Wangers, famous for his intimate relationship with the original Pontiac GTO, stops by with a prime specimen. All that, and we get some live entertainment courtesy of the Exhaust Tones.

RAW NOTES: GM’S Massive Media Blitz

Even though I hate to see car companies get into to big-time financial trouble, there’s always one good thing that comes out of all the turmoil.  As they try to claw their way back they have to convince the world that they’ve got great products coming.  And that means they have to open up their design studios and show us their future product.

Yesterday General Motors held a massive media blitz.  You’ve already heard the big news that came out of that event: the Chevrolet Volt will have an EPA city fuel economy rating of 230 miles per gallon.  But GM also pulled the wraps off quite a number of new models that will be out in the next four years, and dropped a few more tidbits of interesting news.  Here’s a verbatim copy of my notes as I wrote them into my notebook.

The Dream Cruise is a celebration of automotive culture, and you never know what or who you’re going to see. We’ll have some special guests joining in the discussion Thursday night including Ed Welburn, General Motors VP of Global Design, as well as Jim Wangers, an advertising man who has a long history with muscle cars and Woodward. We’ll even have music from the automotive-themed band, The Exhaust Tones! Many other surprise guests will be stopping by as well, so don’t miss it.
