Driving Ford’s Four-Cylinder EcoBoost

We’ve reported extensively on Ford’s EcoBoost engines. The story began a couple years ago when the company introduced its twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6. That engine launched in the Taurus SHO as well as the Lincoln MKS and MKT. Now, in 2011, Ford is spreading the technology across all kinds of vehicles, from pickup trucks and crossovers to family sedans and c-segment hatchbacks. The latest EcoBoost engine in the works is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Reporting from the driver’s seat, here are a few of John’s thoughts on the new powerplant.

    TO “ENABLE & BRAND” THE TECHNOLOGIES WHICH THE EUROPEANS HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN USING SUCCESSFULLY FOR QUITE A NUMBER OF YEARS NOW.

    BASED ON THIS FIRST REVIEW, IT SOUNDS LIKE THIS 2.OL 4 CYL Eco WILL BE THE HIGHEST VOLUME, AND BEST ITERATION, AS OF YET. SEEMINGLY, THRU FORD, ITS 4 CYL Eco OPERATION ELEVATED TO THAT OF AN ‘ART FORM’ OF PERFORMANCE CAPABILITIES & FUEL EFFICIENCY – FOR LIGHT OR HEAVIER VEHICLES!

    AS ANYONE FAMILIAR WITH ENGINEERING & DESIGN WELL KNOWS, THE WORDS “PAINSTAKING DETAILS” ARE THE CHALLENGE AND HALLMARKS OF GREAT DESIGN!

    THERE IS, INDEED, NO SUBSTITUTE FOR “DETAIL ENGINEERING” – FORD’S ‘HOLISTIC’ APPROACH, WITH THEIR POWERTRAIN SUPPLIERS, MAXIMIZING THE EFFICIENCY OF EACH SUB-SYSTEM WILL UNFAILINGLY LEAD TO A SUPERIOR AND PROPERLY INTEGRATED SYSTEM.

    IT’S OBVIOUS THAT THE FINAL RESULTS MORE THAN SUPPORT THEIR SYSTEMS APPROACH – 21st CENTURY SIX SIGMA METHODOLOGY, PERVASIVE @ FoMoCo.

    IT’S FABULOUS TO SEE THAT FORD IS NOW ELEGANTLY SHOWCASING THE WORD ‘MOTOR’ WITHIN IT’S FULL COMPANY NAME – EcoBoost OR OTHERWISE!

    IMPORTANTLY, BASED ON AMERICA’S CURRENT DIESEL PRICES & THE MARKEDLY INTRINSIC HIGHER COSTS OF DIESEL ENGINES & AMERICA’S CURRENT POLITICAL MINDSET’ OF THEIR EMISSIONS, CURRENTLY & IN THE FUTURE, UNDER MULALLY’S PROMISE, FORD, INDEED, HAS A BETTER IDEA – WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT EcoBoost’s ADDITIONAL EXPENSE, MAY BE “PAID-IN-FULL” AFTER THREE YEARS OF DRIVE TIME.

    LASTLY,

    WITH FORD’S LATEST EcoBoost ENGINES & THEIR TECHNOLOGIES, HONDA IS NOW PLAYING FIDDLE, 2nd CHAIR – MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, BECAUSE THEIR COMPANY’S ENGINEERING RESOURCES MAY HAVE BEEN ‘STRETCHED & VECTORED’ TOO THIN DUE TO THEIR ‘SKY’S THE LIMIT’ HONDAJET PROGRAM – NO LONGER FOCUSING HERE ON TERRA FIRMA – WHERE THE TIRE MEETS THE ROAD! Their MOJO HAS BEEN OVERCOME BY PROVERBIAL ‘QUICKSAND’.
