This week we’re talking about one of the best ways to have fun wasting fuel as well as all the boring ways to save as much gas as we can in a crisis. First we’ll be getting into some drag racing talk with long-time Milan Dragway Track Announcer Michael G. Nastos. We’ll talk about the emerging popularity of vintage drag racing, something called “Project 1320″ and why the IRS is investigating the NHRA. In the meantime, a survey says most Americans want to get 62 miles per gallon. So why aren’t hybrids that popular? While we’re at it: why haven’t CAFE regulations ever reduced our dependence on foreign oil? John McElroy is also joined in studio by the Autoextremist, Peter De Lorenzo, and auto journalist Jim McCraw.

Ethanol added to fuel reduces the BTU’s, but does it create other problems for a car that is lightly driven. What additives available at the stores would be helpful. I can’t get my lawn mower to crank up after not being used all winter, and I blame it on the ethanol gasoline that was in the tank all winter. My daughter has a car that had trouble dying at the stop light, and the mechanic got it fixed, but still doesn’t undersand the problem, just told my daughter it needed to be driven more.

We were talking about a slight amount of methanol added to nitromethane. Nitro as it is at 100% is nearly impossible to light. The alky is used to make sure it does fire.
