    Ford is indeed taking another big risk with these F150 innovations, I wonder if they will still be able to dominate the pickup market when these new trucks come online?

    The claimed 700 pound weight reduction of the new F150 sounds good to me, but I’m not a “truck person.” The 2.7 liter turbo doesn’t sound so good, especially given the not-so-great performance/mpg history of the other Ford “ecoboost” engines. That 2.7 might be nice in a Fusion, though.

    I wonder if the 2.5 inline used in the new GM mid-size trucks is the “Aluminum Duke” grandson of the infamous Iron Duke?

    It will be the same 2.5 used in many cars, including Malibu, Impala, and ATS. It is a modern twin cam 16 valve engine that seems to have a good track record.

    Is my math right? VW/Audi sold about 600,000 cars in 2013, to hit their target they have to sell an additional 400,000 cars per year. Do they have enough dealers to sell that many cars and witch car company is going to fold to allow VW to sell that many cars?

    Ford has the Mustang and Chevy has the Corvette and Camaro. When is Volvo going to truely bring back the P1800? I would be great of them if they did it before Sir Roger Moore is gone. The P1800 is an iconic vehicle.

    6, From my experience, VW needs more, and better dealers. From what I could find, they have about half as many dealers as Nissan, which sells only a little more than the volume that VW wants to sell.

    Wow, the day GM comes out with the Canyon, Ford comes out with the F150, a full size that will most likely have better MPG.What a smack-down, the car wars of old have returned.I love it.

    @Gerry, +1. When GM revealed the Colorado they said it was 700 to 900 pounds lighter than the big one. Now ford reduces the weight of its big one by 700 pounds…wow. Another reseason the midsize truck is dead, please bring back the small truck. Maybe the government could help by getting rid of the chicken tax…. fat chance.

    I cannot recall anyone ever telling me they were buying a given vehicle because of it won “Car of the Year” You buy what you like, need and can afford.

    Some people just like driving a smaller one better, and the Colorado should cost less. Still, you expect the smaller one to get better mpg, and it probably will, especially in real world highway driving where the smaller size will reduce aero drag.

    Also, I’ll believe the 700 pounds lighter when someone other than Ford marketeers weigh the the F150. The 2015 Mustang was supposed to be lighter, but it’s not.

    13 I don’t think this article is well informed, CK. I heard the last two Autoline segments where NACTOY was discussed. Contrary to the BS that there are no criteria for choosing a winnner, I learned that cars are so good today that it’s ‘feel’ and ‘pleasure’ that are valued. Translation, cars today are great, muthereffer(even if few appeal to a relic like me. The usual reasons). Panelists spend considerable time with each car or truck; we hear regularly what car John is driving on any given week. The ‘contestants’ are being compared to other cars in their classes, being graded on their degree of innovation and separation from the field by weirdos(like us). And if you watched the C7R reveal from this morning you’d have seen that multiple journalists pointed to C7 and Silverado as outstanding new cars.

    Let’s see some more self-consciousness from you. Yeah, I’m hot

    Congratulations to GM on their Car and Truck of the year awards. Until they outsell F-150 and out-style Dodge (sorry, Ram) there will be no fist pumping here.

    Lots of aluminium in that F-150. I hope the body shop guys and gals can fix it as well as they fix steel.

    I do not see VW reaching that 1 mil mark without introducing a truck, minivan, and better suv. The current product I like from a driving perspective, but they are hell to work on. They need to look at a Honda or Toyota, hell even a Chevy or Dodge is simpler and more robust today.

    Ok, I have an oddball technical question on VW’s. The 2.5L engine has a vacuum pump, Why? On normally aspirated engines you get vacuum from the intake in normal operation, why does VW use a vacuum pump (which by the way commonly leaks oil and requires a $700 transmission removal to replace this $30 part) ?

    @ #21 Well Pedro, I am not a bodyman, however when getting repair estimates for vehicles with aluminium panels (Audi, M-B, BMW high end) they are always higher because of the aluminium panel repair. This may effect F-150 insurance rates.

    I know from having had an aluminum hood on the Miata that it’s quite nice to have such a lightweight element to lift when you want to get to the engine. Also, the even weight balance of the car was a function of that light hood.

    @ #26 Now I am really curious as to the price of a 2015 F-150??? These items will be costly to introduce so what will be left off or cheapened to add these items? Are things like the wheel shutters and moveable air dam options?

    26, The hood on a Prius is REALLY LIGHT to lift. It is aluminum, and it is small, given the steeply raked windshield.

    17, The actual voting results for NACOTY and NATOTY are interesting. I’ll post a link for 2013 later, and 2014 if it’s available yet.

    In the old days, body work involved solder, which does not work well with aluminum. Body shops will now get a lot more practice with whatever techniques they use with aluminum, because a month of Ford pickup production is probably more units than all of the A8′s and E types in America.

    Only some body shops are able to handle these aluminum repairs and so the cost of repairs will be higher, remember up to now, only expensive luxo cars have been built using mostly aluminum.

    An interview with Mulally about making more Fords out of aluminum. The bigger the car the greater the savings. He’s calling the material of the future.

    Aluminum does not hammer well,does not handle heat well,requires use of specific primers and blasting media to remove paints to avoid warping. Has anyone experienced welding aluminum? It is a whole different ball game and I bet not many body repairmen would rate as competent.

    This was in the body of the message (above) and revealed by John:

    “The jurors gave the Stingray 211 points; the Mazda3 received 185 and the Cadillac CTS received 94.

    The jurors gave the Silverado 219 points; the Jeep Cherokee received 174 and the Acura MDX received 97.”

    My theory on why CTS was third is because, even though it was a giant leap forward, it also had a price increase that could also be considered a giant leap forward.

    It also looks like the second placed cars in both segments were impressive to the jury. I was liked the mazda3 interior, especially for that price. And I’ve spent time in previous 3s.

    The CTS, like the E-Class, 5 series, etc. are nice cars, but to me, and probably to the jurors, for what they cost, they ought to be nice cars. The Corvette is something special in its own right, and the Mazda 3, for less than half the price of the CTS, would impress.

    I found that the voting, by juror, will be revealed on January 20.

    After the reveal of the gmc canyon it is confirmed,(for me) that I just don’t like ANYTHING about gmc pickups,big or small.I will wait for the Colorado diesel.
