    Engineers do need room to dream. It can be unfulfilling to be tasked with endless re-designs of dashboard louver vents, hub caps etcetera. if you can stand the pun, a jet is a way to spread one’s wings so to speak. It is good for morale if not necessarily for corporate profits.

    Not to take anything away from Acura and their new torque converter DCT, but this is pretty much the same reasoning Mazda used in the development of their SkyActiv 6AT. Although this is a single clutch design, it uses a small torque converter to smooth out low speed operation up to 5 mph.

    Yes, Buick’s commercials are good and do exactly what they need. However, they need to keep beating that drum for a while.

    Who knows simply hiring a VP of sales with a British accent may have been the only thing needed. ;)

    So is this TLX supposed to be smaller than the outgoing TSX? That would be smart. I still drool over the original TSX.

    Mitsubishi has built other aircraft, just not recently. In the 70′s and early 80′s the MU-2 aircraft was a turboprop aircraft designed for local executive transport. They were a high wing aircraft with a pressurized cabin so they could operate over 10,000 feet. When the light aircraft shakeout happened in the 80′s, the MU-2 was one of the casualties.

    I thought that I heard Acura is thinking about dedicating all models to only AWD. This would make Acura similar to Subaru at a Premium Level. This is not a bad idea IMHO.

    When can you get someone from Subaru like Tom Doll to come in and be interviewed on Autoline After Hours? I want to hear the inside scoop on when a new Tribeca based upon the Subaru Viziv Concept vehicle will be hitting the market. The Subaru combination of a Boxer Engine and Symmetrical AWD has become a winning combination with my extended family.

    The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is a cute CUV, too bad the large Outlander does not have the same front and rear design look. The current Outlander is just plain ugly. It would sell must better if it carried the Sport’s overall look just at a SUV size.

    The one thing that comes to mind when I look at an Acura is that they remind me of Oldsmobiles. The current corp of Buick’s are very good looking however the brand and vehicles just does not justify the higher sticker price than other GM products IMHO.

    The styling refresh of the Outlander is an improvement, but I agree, they still have a ways to go. I see a lot of the Sports here in Daytona. If I had to replace my 2006 Outlander, I’d consider a Sport.

    Yes, I have owned two Subarus and they are great cars. Had they still offered a 2008 Legacy Wagon size vehicle, I would still be owning one.

    The wife wanted a wagon. Not a CUV or a wagon trying to look SUV. A wagon. So that removed Subaru, at least because of their limited offerings in the United Stat.s

    6, I too have read that Acura is thinking of going to mandatory AWD. That would be a good idea if they want to further shrink their sales in places like Florida and Arizona.
    11, I liked the Legacy wagon, until they added the plastic cladding and lift kit, and started calling it Outback. A regular Legacy wagon, with FWD, would be a nice compromise of space and fuel efficiency. Subaru used to sell such cars. They probably still do, but not in the US.

    Yes, the Mitsubishi Motors division is improving steadily as their decisions the past couple years are starting to pay off.

    I believe FWD Subarus were only offered in the early 90s. It didn’t work out for them. You could get the Justy with button activated AWD on the stick shift. But the Justy was ultimately a Suzuki Swift with another axle.

    Of course, excluding the Scion/Subaru twins.

    John – Your guest on AAH, Mat Hargett, said he was concerned about that “herky-jerky” ride around town from a DCT. so they incorporated a torque converter in the transmission. That’s interesting, because that “herky-jerky” ride is exactly the problem I found in my new 2011 Buick Regal with the 2.4L I-4. I hated the ride in that car so much, I got rid of it as fast as I could. 2011 was the first year for the re-designed Regal and I don’t ever want another Regal like that one. Could GM have used a DCT with this torque converter technology?

    15, A friend had an FWD Subaru wagon, probably 1980′s. It was very basic, with a manual transmission, and may have been from before they used the Legacy name.

    The Justy was not a Suzuki Swift, but Chevy Sprint and Geo Metro were. The Justy had a bigger 3 cylinder, I think 1300, while the triple in the Suzuki was 1 liter.

    The subaru Justy also offered a cvt.The Legacy came out in 1990 iirc,and I still miss my 79 subie gl wagon with a 4 spd manual.That was a great little car.It died of body cancer.

    The Justy sold in the US was a different car from the Suzuki, but I found that a Suzuki was later re-badged as a Justy, but it was not sold in the US. I also found the the US-bound Justy had a 1200cc triple, not 1300 as I said in 17.

    @ Bradley: I think your right.Back then as much as I loved subies,I took a new Justy out for a test drive.I didn’t go a mile before turning around and heaed back to the dealership.What surprised me the most was that Subaru put their name on that pos.Good thing they weren’t around for very long…

    A very early, and maybe the first “modern” CVT car, if 1959 is modern. I saw a few of these on the road when I was in Scotland in the navy in 1970.

    I had a 1987 Chevy Sprint, the first generation Suzuki Swift. The second generation was sold by GM as Geo Metro. The Sprint and Justy entered the US market at the same time, within a year.

    I found the Justy interesting, both both because of the 3 cylinder engine, and the uncommon-at-the-time CVT. As I remember, the Justy was a little bigger, but from magazine tests I read, was much thirstier than the Swift/Sprint when both had manual transmissions, which is what I was shopping.

    This is correct: after WWII, Mitsubishi built the very successful, twin-engine, MU-2 turboprop transport among other transport aircraft. The statement in today’s transcript, “But after the war the U.S. prohibited Japan from building aircraft,” is inaccurate.

    Buick needs to make better looking and executed cars with “Buick presence” rather than good advertising… For a number of years, until the last set of models, Buick had great looking cars that looked impressive.. They had impressive looks that would fit in with more up market (i.e. German) brands.. They did this much better than current Cadillac models, too!!
    However, the last bunch of Buicks no longer have much image and have a lot less “up market” look… The other thing that looks awful is the odd “cover” pad that sort of covers the dash…
    We stopped by the Buick dealer about a couple of months ago, and it was just plain sad to see what happened with this last class of Buicks…
    We also saw a couple of Lucernes that were pretty recent models, and a couple of older LeSaberes, and had to comment on how much nicer they look than the current models… The comparison is pretty stark in a bad/sad way…
    Buick needs to build on the great designs of the last 20+ years, prior to their current designs, that really looked like Buicks..and actually appealed some younger successful buyers… Maybe they could not afford a Mercedes, yet, but they could have a Buick that still looked good next to the ‘benz… This is no longer true, and good advertising will only go so far!! I think it would be nice if the ad like could be “Wow..That’s a Buick” as opposed to “Oh, I didn’t know that was a Buick!?!?”

    I just read that Eastern Airlines is buying up to 40 of the Mitsubishi airplanes. I though Eastern folded about 20 years ago.

    The new Eastern Airlines is based in Miami. Pedro, if you are out there, do you know anything about them?

    It looks like the Mitsu airplane is going after the Brazilians (Embraer) at least in passenger capacity of the new airplane.

    28, As they say, aesthetics are(is?) in the eye of the beholder. I think the current Buicks like decent, and thought the LeSabres were way too generic looking, kind of a less stylish Camry.

    The LeSabres were good cars, though, roomy and fuel efficient with the 3800 engine. Also, I liked the looks of the Lucerne.

    29, You weren’t supposed to say that. It is still classified.

    Why has Mitsu not done well in US sales?? Their models look pretty good, seem to have a small following, and be of pretty good quality…
    They also seemed to start their time in the US (’80′s as I recall) with a pretty full line up of cars and truck, and quite a number of dealers.. I know their lineup seems to be dropping, now, but I don’t really understand why they did not do as well as some other similar brands in the US.. Any insight??

    I think Buicks look pretty nice. Considering the better ride and std equipt, not found on Chevys, they are competitively priced.
    I feel most cars and suv’s have been looking pretty much the same, prolly due to the multitudes of gov’t regulations which fickle designers creativity. As a result, and if I didn’t know better, these do-gooders are implementing the same idea shared by the Reich’s peoples car; The VW beatle. Kinda makes me want to buy a big gas hog just in spite!

    I wonder is some of the $12.5B will be used to seperate Cadillac from the Chevy dealerships? I doubt Ford would be able to seperaate Ford dealers from Lincoln, but I have to say, my dealer has called several times to see if I am in need of anything. They even remembered I only worked down the street, so they mensioned having a loaner Linc. ready for me when I drop off the MKZ for the first oil change at 6am.

    Is the dealer where you got your MKZ also a Ford dealer? Where I am, Ford is mostly free standing. The nearby Lincpln dealer in FL is also Jaguar and Land Rover. The nearest Lincoln dealer to Kokomo, IN is Mazda/Lincoln.

    I said this a week or so back, That Buick ad to me is a miss. Your saying that people can not pick your product out of a crowd. HOW is that good. It doesn’t matter how good your product is if people don’t even know that it’s yours. At least with corporate grilles that are now all the rage , you do know what brand it is. You can look at a Ford and know that is what it is. Same with Cadillac, Kia, Chevy, Formerly Pontiac you knew it was a Pontiac from a long way away from the car. Buick needs to style their cars to get attention and instantly have people recognize what it is.

    32, It seemed that when Mitsu had a more complete lineup, with Galant, Lancer, etc., some SUV’s, and the sporty looking Eclipse, the cars always got so-so reviews relative to the competition. They weren’t bad, but they didn’t stand out. The sparse dealer network didn’t help. More recently, by dropping most of their models, they seem to be almost announcing their intent to leave the US market.

    Kit, the town Linc. dealer also sells Fords, yet they have seperate buildings which existed many moons ago when Lincoln was more popular. Only now is the dealer making more of an effort to re-identify each building as a seperate identity. But I have seen mechanics sevicing both brands in either bays for obvious reasons. I did mension the dealer side needed more roadside bling and was told it was in the works to spice the place up a bit beyond the Ford side.

    XA, you may think the Buick ad is a miss, but increased sales says otherwise,…esp to younger buyers. If you can’t tell the difference from the outside, just look at the grill…for a start, then drive one!

    If I were buying a new car, exclusively for comfortable trips between Indiana and Florida, a LaCrosse would probably be on my shopping list. As it is, I’ll be roughing it on my trip next Saturday, driving the C4 Corvette.

    43, It’s kind of noisy, and the ride is very stiff. Most of the pavement is fairly decent, so the ride won’t matter too much. The seats should be decent, but that is “to be determined.” My longest time in the car, so far, has been about an hour. It will definitely go down the road well, but I might need to watch my speed more than when in a Prius or a minivan.

    Yrs ago I met a fellow who owned a Lambo Countach and he told me it was intolerable after 3 hrs of driving, never even went to Disney in it. Imagine spending all that money on an exotic car just to drive around town!

    49, My Corvette has low seating, but you have a range of seatback adjustment and height adjustment. If you don’t like “feet forward” seating, though, you would be out of luck.

    25. That’s right – the DAF was the first car with a CVT. The pride of Holland…. I remember them well. There are a bunch of you tube videos out there that take a close look at the repair of the transmissions.

    The Countach is hard to see out of (big blind spots), the engine drones at steady highway speeds, most lack a decent radio, heavy clutch, and stiff ride. I still want one like on the poster.

    I am not impressed with the Buick ads, but I do like the Regal. Perhaps they should bring back the Solstice and call it a Buick.

    From a technicians standpoint I do not like Mitsubishis The starter sounds cheap, the interiors are cheap, and the suspensions are not refined.

    Mitsubishi was getting killed with the exchange rates. The popular models were built in Japan. They killed off the slow sellers built in Illinois and moved the production of the popular models there.

    I don’t think that is preparing to leave the market. Instead it’s more a matter of returning to their core competency of building small, well-built, high-value vehicles.

    I hear there might be a new Eclipse in the works, once more platformed off the Lancer. I think they made a terrible mistake trying to take the Eclipse upmarket to a more mature buyer. A new, smaller Eclipse might be a good move.

    The later Eclipse always got bashed by the magazines for not being sporty enough, but I thought it was nice addition to the automotive landscape. If they make a new one, and keep the price down, it might sell.

    The only Eclipse I’ve driven (in Eagle Talon guise) was the first generation AWD turbo. That one WAS sporty, for the time and price.
