    Mid-Engined Corvette I have been hearing about that from the mid 70s with the Rotary Vette that was in all the magazines and never saw the light of day. If it ever does happen it will be so anti climatic it won’t be funny. I guess I’ll believe when I see it on showroom floors.

    Best anti theft device going today is a manual transmission. Most people don’t know how to drive a stick. I’ve actually seen videos where car thieves jump in and then back out when they see the car is a stick

    While absolute numbers usually tells the best story when comparing facets of the automobile, in this case I think it would be more represented if the top stolen vehicles were reported by percentage of vehicles registered. I’m guessing that some of those listed would change. And this would more truly reflect the risk an owner of one type versus another would face.

    That stolen car list can’t possibly be right, can it? It says 52, 000 1996 Honda Accords were stolen in 2015. About 382,000 ’96 Accords were sold in the U.S., and being 20 years old, I doubt that more than 150,000 of them are still around. Were 1/3 of them stolen last year? I kind of doubt it.

    The present Corvette layout is affordable and very street able. That is a big selling point. A rear engine version could be a special designation “R” for rear engine and Race version. The insurance for that version would be huge but anyone that can afford a “R” version Corvette is not concerned about the insurance payments. Build it and they will buy it!

    BTW, n that same show, while reviewing their opinions on the Chrysler Crossfire becoming a collectable, both of them stated as a factor of original slow sales that it was not available in a manual shift transmission. Not true either one. First, in the beginning, sales were excellent. Second, a manual was always available in all of the Crossfires.

    I, for one, don’t care if they build a mid-engine Corvette or not. If they do, it will be a very pricey rich person’s toy, kind of like the Ford GT, and will be way out of my price range. Also, it would not be nearly as good as a C7 as a daily driver.

    If they do build a mid-engine car, they need to sell it alongside the current ‘Vette, and not allow the price of the front engine car to creep up more than it already has.

    A mid-engined Corvette has been rumored nearly as long as there have been Corvette. Zora always wanted one, but even with his influence, he was unable to convince the GM brass to spend the money.

    I hope Tadge is honest in saying a ME Corvette is not on the table. Changing Corvette would be like changing the layout on the 911; a bad idea. Should there be a super-Corvette? I say no. I understand the limits of a front engined supercar are near the edge, but are the costs of taking 10ths of a second off the performance envelope really worth it?

    I think if there is a mid-engined GM project, it will be a Cadillac to support de Nysshen’s
    ego.

    OMG! why can’t we get this correct? Corvette is mid engine, it’s mid engine, it has a mid engine mount, THE CAR IS MID ENGINE! Will corvette come out with a rear mount mid engine is the question.

    9 Sorry about the semantics. When I am in my Corvette, the engine is in front of me, and in front of the transmission. To me, that makes it a front engine car.

    The Hot Wheels Honda’s from what I have read is the interchangeable parts and high production numbers of these vehicles sold in dense population centers. Honda’s last so long that when a specific part is needed a call goes out to the “Midnight Auto Supply Network”. What will happen when an autonomous version of these vehicles gets stolen? Will it call for help?
    Will autonomous police cars drive law enforcement officers to it’s rescue?

    I will wait until Elon Musk produces the first car with artificial Intelligence (AI) like the Knight Rider Knight 2000 aka KITT.
    Elon will probably call his version the Tesla Model AI.

    The streets of So. Cal are full of tuner Hondas. They are modified and live forever with ragged paint and mismatched body parts. Remember we don’t have rust here. The theft market keeps the old ones going. If you see a flowmaster hanging out the back end, you know performance parts are underhood.

    Mid Engine (Rear) Corvette – I always enjoy the rumors, & many years ago when at Chevrolet Engineering ran many engine cooling & HVAC development tests on a (rear) mid engine Corvette which at that time was targeted for the 1971 model year. It obviously did not make it into production & I take all rumors with a large grain of salt. That being said, while my 2016 C7 Z51 is a little more expensive than my 1970 C3 L46, I will admit the 2016 is a very nice luxury vehicle that is fairly quick. I hope that Chevrolet continues with a derivative of the current model if they also bring out a more expensive (rear) mid engine model.

    I know it’s a minor detail but the average car person doesn’t know the meaning of mid engine, John and Sean keep boasting that they are the real auto experts so if that’s the case they should be getting this right.

    Porsche doesn’t want to admit how much better their mid engine machines handle than their rear eng models. it’s all a matter of balance.

    16 Yep, “tradition” will keep some version of the 911 around forever, even though they have compromised in other areas, like selling SUV’s, and using liquid cooled engines in the rear engine cars.

    @15, nobody cares about your “minor detail” except you, mid engine is when the engine is behind the driver and in front of the rear axle and that is all that needs to be said about it, regardless of it’s relationship to the front axle, find something else to feel superior about.

    Most pre WW2 cars were front mid-engine, as defined by the front of the engine being completely behind the front axle. I don’t know if “behind the axle” means the center line, or some other part. Also, I don’t know if the “front of the engine” means the end of the crankshaft, the front of the block, or something else.

    Is it mid engine or is it rear engine? I thought that the engines in the current vette was so far back that most would consider it mid engine. Chevy experimented with rear engine in the astro vettes in the 60s, even a helicopter engine in the one that looks like a viper from Battlestar Galatica.

    While I would love to see a stand-alone rear biased mid-engine Corvette, the reality is, is that it is surely a wait and see (at this point). And after reviewing the spy-shots on the web, I’m not so sure that the spy photos aren’t just shots of the newest front biased engine’d Corvette, as that must surely be in the ‘works’ as well. But if it does come to pass (rear biased mid) I do hope they name it after Zora, after all he was the savior of the Corvette during those early years. I yield to Bill Mitchell as the “Father of the Corvette”.

    It will be fun when the mid engine corvette comes out. Ford seems to have 6000 orders for its 400grand mid engine ford GT…

    GM would be smart to join in the profit area…

    I know I won’t be able to buy a 400 grand super car but it should be worth a few laughs..

    I prefer the current corvette platform with its front mid engine and rear transaxle. It’s awesome performance, affordable pricing, super car performance levels and able to complete daily driver duties,,

    Mid engine sports cars are cool…but I’m not paying the price for this 100 to 400 thousand dollar super cars…

    That’s too much money for any car…

    Even 100 grand is ridiculous…

    Let’s get real…a mid engine corvette should not cost any more than a front mid engine car …

    Why couldn’t the c8 just be a mid engine chassis…and cost the same as the present car?

    That I might purchase….but it will never happen…
