FOUR WHEEL STEER FOR BIG PICKUPS
Big pickup trucks and SUVs can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. So the supplier company ZF is developing a new steering system, where both the front and rear wheels steer. It is testing the system on this Ford F-150 pickup, which makes it easy to fit the big truck into small parking spaces and through tight turns. It also improves emergency lane change maneuvers, even with a heavy load in the back of the truck. ZF says this system will appeal to drivers who feel big trucks and SUVs are difficult to park. It gives a Ford F-150 about the same turning radius as the much smaller Ford Escape.
BMW’S VISION FOR FUTURE MOTORCYCLE
BMW is showing off its vision for a future motorcycle, which is called the Motorrad VISION NEXT 100. It has a unique upside down V-shaped frame that incorporates the front suspension forks. The rear suspension arm attaches to the engine. BMW says anyone can ride this motorcycle because it features a self-balancing mechanism, which keeps the motorcycle upright even when it is stopped. It also has a special set of goggles that projects information for the driver.
DESIGNING TRUCKS FOR PLATOONING
The Exa Corporation is using simulation software to research the benefits of truck platooning. Earlier studies found that a 15-meter distance between trucks improved fuel efficiency by 10%. But Exa’s simulations show that the optimum distance is 9 meters. If they get any closer, air to the radiators is blocked, which makes the cooling fans come on, and that hurts fuel efficiency. Platooning could play a significant role in reducing emissions and fuel consumption with big trucks.
FORD RECYCLES DESIGN CLAY
Automakers are always looking for innovative ways to reduce waste and improve the environment. This is why Ford is recycling the clay that it uses in its design studios. It takes clay shavings and drops them in a machine which produces fresh clay at the other end. Ford now recycles nearly 2,200 kilograms of clay each year. That’s enough to make more than two full-size models.
HYBRID ELECTRIC UNIT FOR SEMI TRUCKS
A company named Hyliion has created an innovative way to improve the fuel efficiency of big trucks. It is a hybrid electric unit that replaces thr rear axles on a trailer. It doesn’t plug in. Instead it captures energy through regenerative braking and coasting and stores it in a battery pack. When power is needed, it is sent through an electric motor, which pushes the trailer. It is especially helpful when going up a steep hill. Hyliion claims its system is able to reduce fuel consumption by up to 31%.
LEXUS SPIDER WEB SEAT
Lexus is showing off a new kind of seat that could be used in future cars. The back and the bottom of the seat have a spider-web pattern which helps distribute a person’s weight. That makes the seat more comfortable and stabilizes a person’s body.The webbing on the seat is made from sustainable sources, not oil based materials. And it’s slimmer compared to a regular seat, which reduces weight and increases interior room.
