On today’s show… Audi researches the autonomous in-car experience… Continental develops windows that tint on their own… and a new way to reduce diesel emissions.
Hello, I’m Lisa Gray, welcome to Autoline China, the show that covers some of the most important new technologies in the automotive industry.
RESEARCHING AUTONOMOUS INTERIORS
Audi revealed that it’s researching the in-car experience in a self-driving car. The automaker, along with the Fraunhofer Institute in Stuttgart, have created a simulator to mimic autonomous driving to better understand how the interior can become a better workplace. The simulator can show digital distractions, dim the windows and change background noise and the color of the lighting. At the same time, the researchers measure participant’s brain activity, in addition to reaction times and errors made. Not surprisingly, in a less distracted environment, with dimmed windows and limited digital messages, the participants were more relaxed and able to finish tasks better and faster. This research is part of Audi’s “25th Hour” project to study how time can be better used in an autonomous vehicle.
CONTINENTAL DEVELOPS AUTOMATIC TINTING
Mercedes has been offering windows that tint at the push of a button for several years now. When an electrical current is applied to a thin film between the panes of glass it causes the molecules to clump together, changing the opacity of the glass. And now the supplier Continental is taking the technology a step further. Automatic tinting. When the car is parked, the windows are at full tint to help keep the interior cool. As you approach the car, the windows go clear. While driving down the road, even when turning, the tint will adjust automatically to conditions, whether it’s bright sunlight or going through a dark tunnel or underpass. Another unique application is a strip at the top of the windshield. It’s a clever way to keep sun out of the driver’s eyes, but in an autonomous future it could be applied to the entire windshield. Another benefit is the air conditioning system doesn’t have to work as hard. Automakers could even reduce the entire size of the air conditioning system.
FAURECIA SYSTEM GREATLY REDUCES NOx
Governments and municipalities around the world are cracking down on diesel vehicles to reduce NOx emissions. Now Seoul, South Korea is working with French supplier Faurecia to install its Amminex system on 20,000 buses and commercial vehicles. Amminex injects gaseous ammonia into the exhaust stream and can reduce NOx emissions by as much as 99%. Most diesels use AdBlue, which is sprayed in as a fluid, which is good, but not as effective. Faurecia says Amminex works best at low engine temperatures which makes it ideal for buses and commercial vehicles.
FORD LAUNCHES BIKE SHARING SERVICE
More and more car companies are expanding into mobility services. Now Ford is teaming up with Motivate, a leader in bike-share technology. They’re launching a bike-sharing program in the San Francisco Bay area. Called GoBike, the service starts today. Users can register online, use the FordPass app, or just walk up to a station to rent a bike. Ford says by the end of the summer it will have 3,500 bikes ready for rent and by the end of next year will have 7,000 bikes and nearly 550 stations.
Coming up next, John McElroy explains why Tesla is valued so highly.
Tesla continues to report big financial losses and it is burning through
cash. Yet, Tesla’s stock continues to set new records. This completely
confounds most automotive experts, who cannot explain why this is happening.
Well, I’ll tell you why it is happening.
Venture capital investors in Silicon Valley tell me that people in the
traditional auto industry are looking at the wrong metrics. Don’t look at
the bottom line, they say, look at the top line, which records how much
revenue the company is bringing in. And don’t look at net profits, they say,
look at gross profits instead.
When you measure it this way, Tesla is performing spectacularly well. It
posted a 120% growth in revenue, and a 142% increase in gross profits.
That’s the kind of growth that Amazon, Apple and Google posted in their
early days. And that’s why the venture capital community is gleefully
pouring more money into Tesla. Meanwhile, the traditional automakers are
only posting single-digit growth, at best.
So if you want to know where Tesla is headed in the future, just keep an eye
on the top line. The latest forecast predicts the stock price will go up
another 30%.
And with that we wrap up today’s show. I’m Lisa Gray, thank you for watching.
