    I’d really like to hear from the motorcyclists here, but the whole idea of collision avoidance for motorcycles just seams a bit unnecessary to me.

    Of all the drivers on the road, I would imagine that motorcyclists are consistently the most aware of their surroundings at all times. They’d have to be considering that the only thing between them and the 2-ton SUV behind them is a leather jacket.

    And given this fact, alerting them of a forward collision risk would only serve to pointing out the obvious. What cyclists isn’t already watching everyone around them like a hawk?

    Of course, this is all assumption coming from someone who doesn’t ride. Maybe there actually is a need that I’m overlooking here..?

    The devil is in the details; like making the dam* things.

    Watching videos from the Tesla factory is painful and should be embarrassing for them. Robots moving at a glacial pace, wip stacked everywhere. This would be bad in the 1960s.

    So much for high tech. They have no idea what they don’t know. But hey, let’s now design an SUV based on the model 3.

    Kind of like when our kids were little and wanted to cheat at cards. They would point outside and yell; ‘look! a moose!’.

    I ride motorcycles, and consider ABS to be a great feature on bikes. As far as automatic emergency braking, I’m not so sure. I’d rather initiate braking myself, and reduce the chances of being hit from behind.

    #2 – My personal history riding sport bikes on good roads & the track is that you need to pay attention to all directions, including to the side & from behind to avoid issues. To me forward collision avoidance is almost a no brainer, however, I could envision it functioning if you’re looking to the side or behind at a bad time. I’ve had people pull out in front of me while wearing red & white leathers while on a bright red motorcycle.

    G.A., I’ve thought the same thing. They make a lot of noise for a company that hasn’t sold all that much. Well except for carbon credits which is where they make their money

    @MJB, I have been a rider since 1974, and I as you, do not look at this technology to be something I can’t do without. Spatial awareness is paramount when riding, and sometimes braking isn’t the right thing to do; sometimes when there is trouble ahead (or sometimes behind) I don’t need an alert (to either heed or ignore) and certainly don’t want unrequested braking from my ride. I’m not saying this might not be good technology (for some) but without in-depth understanding of its function riding may not be the best place for ‘extra’ interaction of me and the road. I would though endorse those blind spot alerts in the rear-view mirrors.

    It seems that Tesla should hire more people from Toyota, Honda, GM, or Ford, you know, a real car company. They should be able to provide valuable information on what is involved in the logistics of building cars in high volume.

    I ride. The main difference between riders and drivers is that it is very rare and difficult to ride in a distracted manner. ABS is great to shorten stopping distances. The main “nanny state” technology that could interest me is V2V, so I can be warning of cross traffic that is not yet visible.

    ABS shortens stopping distances on bikes and, maybe more importantly, it keeps the bike under control during panic braking.

    I’ve never had a bike with ABS, but a very skilled rider, and MSF instructor friend, figures ABS has helped him avoid at least one crash over the years, with his now-old BMW “K” bikes with ABS.

    I’ve ridden,(and built) harleys all of my adult life.I was never in an accident. I prefer to do my own braking,and have had many ‘panic stops’ from cages not paying attention.

    By learning how to use both the rear and front brake simultaneously,one can stop in relatively short order,without dumping your ride.

    Living out in the country one gets plenty of practice with deer running out in front of you.You either learn,smashup,or quit riding.

    As I rider, I am constantly looking for distracted drivers. But I can’t see around buildings.

    Tesla isn’t the scam; Instead, it’s the founder. They don’t have the manufacturing prowess to pull off the kind of numbers they keep promising. They managed to burn through $1.3 billion in cash last quarter and I would expect a similar if not greater burn in the final quarter.

    As for his so called “burst mode” where he claims to be able to build 1,000 cars a week, That’s like saying I can run a four minute mile because I can run a 100 yard dash in under 10 seconds. One has nothing to do with the other.

    When will he make it to 1500 cars a week, let alone 10,000? (which is 4,000 more than Toyota managed to turn out of the same plant). He’ll need to raise more cash, most likely on the order of $2.5 billion just to stay afloat.

    If it takes until this time next year to achieve this goal, he’s going to be right in the sweet spot of the Germans being in full stride introducing alternatives.

    The other questions for Tesla are where will the money (and engineering) come for the Model Y plus a successor to the Model S, of which 2018 makes it 7 model years old.

    The Elon smokescreen can’t last much longer.

    I think the general public is very forgiving towards Elon Musk and Tesla. He is the Automotive Underdog in an arena filled with people like Gary who say “he is done” or “He will never make it”! The truth is that Tesla is more an a automobile manufacturer! It is an “Idea” similar to when President Kennedy said “We will send a man to the Moon and return him to the Earth safely”. Henry Ford when he first developed the assembly line for the Model T that he did have his detractors! Americans love an Underdog and Tesla “The Idea” will live on no matter who are his detractors, IMHO.

    I interviewed at tesla over a year ago and knew they wouldn’t hit the rate then. The place is filled with a bunch of young millenials that never worked in a production plant.

    As far as can crash avoidance technology on a motorcycle I would pass on that. Laying the bike into a curve and having it brake when you don’t expect it would not be good. I don’t text talk on the phone or even listen to music on my bike Paying attention and enjoying the riding experience is what cycling is about

    I am not concerned that someone is going to hack into my car and force my car to imitate the cliff jump scene from Thelma and Louise.

    My fear is that as more auto companies follow Tesla’s “over the air updates” example, someone will hack into the automaker and send out a destructive update to all of their vehicles. THAT will be the nightmare scenario. And with the increasing number of hacking events taking place at companies, organizations and even the government that have supposedly very high levels of security, I will be very hesitant to drive a vehicle that receives remote updates.

    I’m not a rider but I suspect the safety tech is there for the coming wave of quiet EV bikes and scooters. In my country, riders often die on their own, on back roads and hit unexpected obstacles. Not every rider is super spacially aware and many riders drive cars with this tech.
    As to Tesla why not just say delivery will take longer, yes the crazy share price will fall but lying to your expectant owners is not a good omen and getting trust back is hard and expensive
