    I know there will be many who disagree with my next statement – some may even consider it sacrilege – but if nothing else, it proves that beauty is surely in the eye of the beholder.

    There is not a whole lot about that classic Jag D-type, other than its gorgeous engine, that I find appealing. I know it’s a “classic design” and all, but I’m just not a fan. The car reminds me of a guppy – from all angles.

    It looks like the D-type “continuation” cars will hurt the value of the original cars.

    I, for one, don’t have much pity for for people, like Bernie Ecklestone, who deal in $10M used cars.

    The “D” Type Jag is certainly an iconic car, and in my opinion nicely designed (I like it), but that being said, when I was listening to the story and thinking about it some, I drifted to the C2 second gen Corvette Sting-Ray, and still have to give it ‘the nod’ (styling wise). And of course; JMO.

    The new VW Arteon on this program looks very nice and classic. I almost bought a CC years ago but the price for the V6 with AWD was too high for my taste. If this version doesn’t offer that same option where does this fit in to a modern model lineup. The other nagging point would be the reliability that many previous VW vehicles suffer from. Having owned vehicles from the Japanese big 3, its hard to take a chance on VW.

    MJB Your right! I like the style. however not enough to ever own one, even if I could afford it. I appreciate the design simply for what it is. However just like AMC Gremlin I think its also cool just not to the point of owning one.

    Good thing is they only need to sell 25 so shouldnt be a problem, as undoubtedly all 25 will become trailer queens parked away in a museum or garage.

    The buyers of those 25 cars will no doubt have serious “connections.” It sounds like they will sell for maybe $1.3M, and the originals have been going for ~$8-10M, so the 25 would, presumably, be very good “investments” for the lucky few, who already have enough money to last 100 lifetimes. I suspect the Tata family will keep some of them.

    I guess I don’t see the attraction of a million dollar sixty year old brand new classic car. And it’s a Jaguar. They only built seventy-five out of the intended build of 100, so does this car still deserve all the attention? Chevrolet intended to built more than five Grand Sports so should GM build an additional 3, or 5 or 10 because the plan was to build more?
    The “Continuation” Cobras that were issued serial numbers (in 1967?) and then later built (in the late 90′s if my memory is correct) are certified as Shelby’s, but do they command the money of a “real” Shelby?

    7 It looks like the “continuation” Cobras are worth a lot more then the “replicas,” but not nearly as much as a real Cobra.

    Three comments:

    MJB – The D Type needs to also be viewed within its time. At the time, nothing came close to its sexy curves.

    The VW Arteon looks nice, but in a much different way than the CC. But the DLO looks like a direct copy of the present generation Chevy Malibu. Does anyone else see that similarity?

    Regarding the Sonata Hybrid fuel economy, how does Hyundai achieve higher highway fuel economy than city fuel economy? In general, hybrids have better fuel economy in city driving where braking for stop signs and red lights recharges the batteries. In highway mode, the batteries and electric motors mostly add mass for the IC engine to overcome.

    Replicas rarely ever pull the money as an original unless its some crazy custom build and the original isnt pulling huge money. I’m building a Lamborghini replica and I’ll be lucky if its worth what I’ll have in it when finished. But I’m building it because I love the design and I like building cars. Dont care what the end value is or if when finished people know its a replica. To me its like building a dune buggy. Just for fun!

    A few hybrid cars, like Camry hybrid, get better EPA highway than EPA city, but as you say, most get better city ratings. The thing that stands out about the Sonata, is that it is such a gas hog, compared to the competition, especially the Camry hybrid, with 51/53 city/highway ratings, and 52 overall. Even the aging Fusion hybrid, now 6 model years old, ties the Sonata at 42 mpg combined.

    Most hybrids get somewhat better highway mileage than their non-hybrid counterparts, because the Atkinson tuned engine is more efficient at the steady speed, light load conditions of highway driving.

    @ #13 As a junoir mechanic in the 90′s at a European shop I can testify the Prince did not leave until Ford showed up.

    There is not enough new about the new Fiat 500 to get people into a showroom to buy it. Steal a page from the Mini playbook and start making money.

    Just curious, since these “new” old Jaguars don’t meet modern safety or pollution standards are they street legal?

    The VW Arteon seems more mainstream in design than the CC. It will be interesting to see if this helps or hurts sales.

    Re: New Fiat 500

    Another FCA “abortion!” and who really cares! As for styling, why would a car be designed and styled to “emulate” a 60′s mechanical disaster? I really do not think FCA has figured out why the Fiat 500 is a “FLOP” in the US market.

    I hope the Alfas will not be plagued with same issues as the original imports were in 60′s & 70′s, as well! At least the Alfas looked good!

    I drove an early “new” 500, and while it drove ok, it was very crude compared to my 2010 Mini. Making the turbo engine standard will make it more fun to drive, but still, it’s going to be a hard sell.

    My question about tickets and the connection to Fast n’ Furious is did the police department station more officers to monitor traffic around theaters when the movie was released? If so, then the cause was more officers issuing tickets. The same results might also have happened with 50 shades of Grey.

    The movie of my youth that could be characterized as, havoc after the fact, was going to see “Vanishing Point” (at the drive-in in my cousin’s ’70 Challenger 340). Don’t ask me how I know. And fortunately, no tickets.

    I was in high school in the 80s and inspiration from any movie would have to of been from another era. Even the corvette in 1984 topped out at 205 HP from the L83 350ci engine. Very anemic vehicles at the time. The good thing was the gas hike made 60s muscle cars cheap so my high school parking lot was filled with Olds 442, Chevelle’s, GTO’s, Cuda, GTX’s, Mustangs and Camaros.
    Man wish I had some of those cars now.

    If FCA did some of the super cheap EV leases in Michigan like they’ve reportedly offered in California (below $100/month), I’d commute in one. Otherwise, no way in hell would I ever consider a 500.
