Hello, I’m John McElroy, welcome to Autoline China, the show that covers some of the most important new technologies in the automotive industry.
NISSAN’S BRAIN-TO-VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY
We’ve heard of vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, but have you heard of Brain-to-Vehicle or B2V technology? Nissan says the technology can speed up reaction times and make driving more enjoyable. By using a device that monitors brain activity, the vehicle would “know” when the driver is about to make a maneuver and the driver assist systems can kick in faster. If the system detects the driver is uncomfortable, it could automatically change the driving mode or use augmented reality to make the interior a more relaxing environment. Nissan says with B2V, the system can perform actions up to half a second faster than a human driver.
TOYOTA’S SOPHISTICATED e-PALETTE
When it comes to autonomy most of the focus is on moving people from point A to point B. But the technology can also be used to help businesses expand. That’s why Toyota just launched the e-Palette Alliance, to develop mobility solutions for business applications. Amazon, Mazda, Pizza Hut, Uber and DiDi, have all joined the Alliance. These companies will help develop a new concept Toyota revealed called the e-Palette Concept Vehicle. The pod-like electric vehicle is fully autonomous and comes in three different lengths that range from 4 to 7 meters. The e-Palette concept is designed to be scalable and customizable, so for example it could be used for ride-sharing, delivering packages or other applications. And it’s also been designed to allow partner companies to install their own automated systems. Toyota plans to test the e-Palette at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
BORGWARNER DEVELOPS NEW AWD SOLUTION
All-wheel drive systems hurt a vehicle’s fuel efficiency because of the power needed to turn the additional moving pieces and the friction between them. But many customers want AWD. Here’s the latest electro-hydraulic clutch assembly, with an integrated control module, that is made by BorgWarner and is used on the Volvo XC40. It sits in front of the rear differential and operates independently from the two axles. It’s able to offer a complete disconnect of the rear drive to save fuel. Or it offers full locking torque, which can be provided at any time or speed. And because the control module features adaptable software, an automaker can program the system to its own driving tastes.
SAUDI OIL COMPANY HELPS PROMOTE ACHATES ENGINE
Aramco, the Saudi Arabian oil company, has teamed up with a company called Achates, which has developed an entirely new engine design. It’s a 3-cylinder engine that uses 2 opposed pistons in each cylinder, so it’s actually a 3-cylinder, 6-piston engine. It also has a compression ratio of 18:1, does not have any spark plugs and runs on gasoline. Achates claims that if it’s used in a full size F-150 pickup truck, it will deliver 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers, which is 68% better than that truck gets now. Achates says a major North American OEM is interested in the 2.7 liter engine, which delivers 270 horsepower and 480 pound feet of torque. If testing proves that this engine can deliver that kind of efficiency it could be a game changer in the pickup segment.
Coming up next, should autonomous ride-sharing cars be hybrids or battery electrics?
SHOULD AUTONOMOUS CARS BE HYBRIDS OR ELECTRICS?
The next step in mobility is offering ride sharing with autonomous cars. But automakers are trying to figure out if they should be hybrids, or battery electrics? The advantage of battery electric cars is they require very little maintenance and electricity is cheaper than gasoline. So they would provide the lowest transportation costs. But all the sensors and computers needed in autonomous cars consume a lot of electricity. So that would limit the range of battery electrics. And recharging those cars takes time. That’s why hybrids or plug-in hybrids may offer a better solution. Both strategies make sense. What is likely to happen is that hybrids will be a better solution in the short term, while battery electrics will win out in the long run.
But that wraps up today’s report, thanks for watching Autoline China.
