    Overall it’s a loser vehicle. Come on Sean that Mitsu Cross sounds like it is lacking a lot. Doesn’t handle well, a lousy interior, not much power, where are the good things to balance this into a reasonable alternative to a CRV or a Forester or RAV4 or a CX5?

    A fair “first impression” of the Eclipse Cross. I think with such a modest product line and limited resources, they err on the side of caution and that leads to a vehicle that is pretty bland.

    Knobs or no on the entertainment stack? Subjective, but reasonable to mention.

    As I’ve said before, the Mitsubishi product line the past three or four years have been pretty darned decent and a reasonable value proposition.

    On the Merc engine; that’s impressive numbers. Surprised they haven’t just laid the engine on its side so the intake would be on top with the exhaust on the bottom. But I suppose getting a low hood isn’t as important since everything is going to the short high hood.

    Sean I like your review segments, but hope that you’ll develop a consistent course of roads or track and criteria that you’ll evaluate each one to. All I got from todays review was its okay. If you had to give a 1-10 on fit, function, ride, performance, overall value to cost. That would be great!

    2 If Mitsu had limited resources it would not waste billions on these crazy ugly vehicles. The fact is that Mitsu is a huge conglomerate with very deep pockets and apparently it has VPs with egos that must be seen actually doing something, so they come up with these ‘meh’ and worse vehicles that are sales disasters, at least in the US market.

    Seriously, who needs this vehicle, when there are 10 others, equally affordable, far better looking, and much smarter designs?

    Electra Meccanica are also trying to get a 3 wheel EV into production. Should be good for single person commuting. I believe they plan on making it in China so it won’t be seen in the U.S.

    While Mitsu is a very large conglomerate, that doesn’t mean that their automotive division is granted endless resources. I am sure they have development budgets that are geared to expected sales. Naturally, the top execs expect each division to be profitable, including the automotive one.

    The Speedster is in an era that fascinates me. A friend just bought a “53″ jag SE for about the same $. For some wealthy person who enjoys classics as much as me, but also likes EV’s, this little toy would be a riot to have.
    The Mitsu is great for my aunt. She’s darn near too old to drive, not more than 35 mph, and couldn’t tell a road bump from a bowel movement. A perfect car for this type of person.
    EV’s, like anything else, always have hidden consequences which effect’s someone else. Hell, look at the other mining industries where homes are being undermined by miles of tunnels. But , in my view, EV’s are for only the rich, the tree huggers, the dreamers and Larry D.

    Many of us, though, make totally irrational car buying decisions, like buying Corvettes that may never see triple digits, and spending more to restore a car than they could ever sell it for. “Larry,” not all of us make our car buying decisions on saving money, or having “the best.” There is far more to being a car enthusiast than that.

    I remember many years ago when Mitsubishi made some very interesting vehicles, both from a technology perspective and a styling perspective. Both that was when Mitsubishi was in a partnership with Chrysler…. the twin stick Colt from 1979 and the early 80s, the Eclipse/Laser/Talon triplets from the early 90s, the Stealth/3000GT twins also from the early 90s, and the Sapporo/Challenger twins (nice car, wrong names) from the late 70s, and the Conquest/Starion twins from the 80s.

    Since you seem to care to know why, I will explain

    it was because when I wrote them, I had NOT seen the video, ONLY the TRANSCRIPT.

    Then I went and saw the video and noticed the little ripoff was a Porsche 356 clone, the unsafe at any speed car all the Hollywood airheads loved to drive, the very car which cost the life of poor James Dean at only 23, if I remember well.

    So I figure the $125,000 is $25,000 for the STUPID car, and $100,000 to Porsche for the rights.

    Either way, only a silly fool would cough up so much for so LITTLE. Cute design notwithstanding.

    I am also not amused with the two clowns, Gates and Buffet, using the fake porsche in a stupid scene where Buffett offers Gates CRAPPY JUNK FOOD.

    I know many here like to vilify the oil Industry, but if you had a clue, you would find the Junk Food AND the Processed Food industry, stuffing poison, cancer and diabetes down your throats, a much bigger villain.

    18 Ahe yes the Eagle Talon. My brother bought one back in the mid 90s and that was an extremely fun car to drive and fast. Interestingly enough it used what seems to be the engine of choice for many cars today. A 2.0L turbo 4cyl. His was AWD and although they only had 210hp back then it was a small light car and felt like more than that. Those and the 3000GT were desirable cars, probably Mitsu’s high point in the US.

    20 I doubt very much that Electra Meccanica is paying Porsche any money let alone $100.000 per car for rights. There are many replica manufacturers out there and they avoid being sued because they are not selling the car as a Porsche. Same goes for the many Shelby Cobra manufacturers. You will not find the Cobra name on their product or website. It has a likeness but is not peddled as a Cobra. I am vary familiar with this as I own a 2001 Lamborghini Diablo replica. The company that manufactured it was contacted by Lamborghini and they agreed to not take legal action as long as the bodies they made were out of production and did not use the Lamborghini names, emblems, etc..
    However when Audi took over they sent out cease and desists letters to anyone that was making replicas. The company manufacturing mine closed up shop. They were told they would probably win in court but did not have the $$$ to fight Audi in what would be certainly a long expensive court battle. Luckily for me I received all my parts and got the second to last body they made before closing the doors.
    I’ve been told that even though I plan to put on actual Lamborghini emblems, lights, glass, and wheels I cannot get in any trouble as long as its never attempted to be sold as an actual.

    I remember when i was commuting to Anaheim (Boeing research facility) from my Long Beach sublet home, once i was in front of a black Diablo in traffic (this back in 2003) and thought the owner gave that car a hard time, but given 26, it might have been a replica!

    26 That’s unfortunate that they shut down the companies making Lamborghini replicas. Apparently VW group reserves that special attention for Lambo replicas. To my knowledge, Porsche 356 replicas are not affected, either factory built ones like in today’s show, and kits being sold.

    29 I bought a 2007 Cadillac DTS that had 7200 miles on it before it was totalled from a rear-end collision and I’m using that 4.6L V8. Only because it was about the only FWD V8 at the time. I am taking the whole cradle engine/transmission, suspension and brakes and just moved it to the rear of my replica. I wanted an engine mated to a transmission using axles that it was engineered for. Some guys use Fiero donors and just place a V8 with an adapter plate to the Fiero transmission. More HP than it was designed for and they can brake axles too. Or they go BMW V12 to a Porsche transmission which gets complicated and expensive. I wont have much more than 340 HP once its tuned and slightly modified but that should be plenty for a fiberglass car that will likely be around 2900 lbs. Wanted something I could easily get parts for and was engineered as a complete unit so I’m not mating a bunch of different manufacturers parts together. Everything on the car is GM parts.

    30 Yeah I guess Ferrari is another stickler for shutting down replica builders. That’s why you hardly ever see any. I think they allow the Porsche replicas because they are a very old design. To me those never looked much different than the Karmann Ghia of the time. But that’s just me. Even the 911 looks like it was a spawn of the beetle. I like the 911 but just felt with the amount of work involved in building a replica I wanted it to be an exotic. I have relatives that have two Cobras and they are very cool and are much easier builds. But almost every car show you can find one and I wanted something you don’t see very often. At times I wish I had done the Cobra as it would be finished already.

    32 I go to some car shows each summer, and yeah, I always see a 356 and Cobra replica or two. I friend built a Cobra a couple years ago, and it looks nice. I don’t know the name of the kit, but the quality was very good. He’s using a Ford 460 out of some kind of truck, and a 5-speed manual from a Mustang. He was able to get the needed drive train hardware pretty easily, and has a nice toy. Yours would be more more rare, though.

    I supposed the V8 powertrain that they used in Impalas et. al. for a few years would work for a car like yours, but the Northstar would be more interesting. I read about one with a BMW V12, but as you say, that would make things much more expensive than using the GM stuff.

    The rest of the powertrain for the mid engine car would be the issue with the BMW engine. It would be more “pure” than the transverse engine, V8 powertrain, but for a replica like that, it doesn’t really matter.

In fact after all this work I want people to know I built it and its not an actual Lamborghini. I just really liked the design and shape of the car.

    I am on a forum with other builders and the guys that use the BMW engine have to get a Porsche transmission and make some modifications to handle the HP. Most of them spent as much for their transmission as I spent for my whole powertrain. Some do fiberglass engine covers that look like the production car if not using a V12 all of which looks cool but to me feels like an effort to fool people. I just want the exterior and interior to look as close to the original and when you open the hood I don’t care if its obvious its a replica.

    39 Sounds like a cool car, and, to me, looking cool is what replicas are all about. If you just want a big engine sports car to drive, you can buy a Corvette, and well preserved C5s can be had at good prices.
