    Sen. Manchin of W. Virginia already voiced his opposition, which will keep the Social Progressive’s bill from passing the Senate unless the union credit provision’s dropped.

    If VW axes Herbert Diess he has a friend in Elon Musk. Musk could put Diess in charge of Tesla Berlin and all of Tesla Europe while Elon works on SpaceX. Diess has the knowledge and influence to sink VW, IMHO.

    My Corvette is looking like more of a bargain all the time, with the new F-car cost $2.26 million. That V12 will sound really cool at 9500 rpm, though.

    Diess is applying to run all of Tesla. He would likely have a different mindset/approach than the current boss :)

    Lets hope the income limits on the EV credits are appropriate, not another gift to wealthy folks.

    I assume there will be no more Bolt models as the name has been sullied. Though that did not affect the Explorer nameplate.

    While reporting the comment targeted at fuel eonomy or safey that “…thst is not enough.” you never challenge the statement for what is the “Goal then?” Also EV credits seem to be the only ” selling point” to move these vehicles.

    8 A big way the new EV credits will benefit middle income people, is that the credit will be available to those not paying $7500 or more income tax.

    For Republican votes to have any effect, there have to be some yes votes. My understanding is the Republicans are a block NO. Worse, past experience with Republicans claiming they will vote yes have been disappointing, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine.

    No one going to ask how Emissions climbed and fuel economy dropped from 1995 and 2004? Seems they have targets that require improvements each year so what happened those 19 years?

    14 Yeah, and the people with $2M+ to spend on a car they’ll never drivr will make money reselling them.

    11 My car has plenty of power, but maybe I should get on the Z06 waiting list. I’d probably be able to drive it for a year, and sell it at a profit.

    @13 – I suspect the answer to your question resides in the mix shift from cars to trucks… particularly the near extinction of small cars and small pickups.

    15 brother in law just took delivery of a new c8 last week. Paid 20 over list $105 total. Had an offer of 125 before he got it home. And agreed your car has plenty of power,and then some.

    16 That would make sense but dang! Did that shift start that long ago? Seems like the shift to trucks and SUVs started more like 2010.
    I found this article stating the shift to trucks started about 2009.

    17 I paid MSRP, $69,495 for mine, which I ordered 13 months ago. It’s a 2LT with no options, Elkhart Lake Blue, with Natural interior. I haven’t found out what I could sell if for, as I don’t want to sell it, but I’m sure I could make money.

    19 – Excellent. That’s the identical content and color scheme that I would have ordered, but I was waiting for a DOHC engine. Unfortunately, all of the Z06 production is committed for at least 3 years.

    18 – The shift started in the 1990s when SUVs began to replace MPVs. It accelerated in the late 1990s when CUVs (CRV and RAV4) started replacing cars.

    It seems GM will have no more Bolts made for the rest of the year,and send everybody a ” Happy Holidays”, GM EVs were also MIA in the LA Autoshow., I guess Joe Biden and Mary Barra were talking the $4,500 UNION Bailout Strategy.

    I dont think Herr Herbert Diess will get his walking papers,VW would be foolish to let him go,He will head straight into Teslas Berlin Giga factory,and be followed by quite a few choice VW Workers and Managers,and he will be compensated with untold TSLA Stock Options,
    VW management and Unions and Employees are caught between a rock and hard place
    Tesla is getting very efficient, the Giga Press is in a league all its own when it comes to productivity,Those who doubt, please ask John McElroy opinion.

    Well, with start-ups sometimes a hitting a few bumps in the road, as they ramp up production, Ford gets to Dodge (you see what I just did there) that bullet with the use of the Rivian skateboard. Plus, having been able to see ‘beyond the vail’, as it were, especially with regard to the R1S, perhaps Ford sees that there may be greater economies of scale by sticking to working with their own products, then working with another on their home turf (the Rivian was skateboard was supposed to be used for a Lincoln product, which Ford now only sales in North America and China). It’s a risky move, especially after years of poorly received examples of badge engineering at the automaker, but Ford has done a much, much better job of late giving each of their brands a different feel (Explorer and Aviator as examples). Worst case, Ford is still a Rivian investor, so as they do better, especially in the stock market, so will Ford! Also, this gives Rivian room to spread their wings, without Ford breathing over they shoulder, yet keeps an experienced automaker close to gain from their years of manufacturing expertise. Win-win!

    26 I still have to think that many of these EV and AV ventures/partnerships were knee jerk reactions by many of the traditional automakers. There was a lot of work being done outside the main automakers and I think they thought they were way behind. The reality was a lot of touting about capability that just didn’t pan out. Seems the answer was to throw money at the problem and now that everyone has basically caught up the joint ventures and partnerships are falling apart. Did Ford get half a Billion dollars of value from Rivian? I doubt it. Did GM get anything near what they spent on Nikola? I doubt that too. Sorry but I think many of the automakers thought they could just buy their way out of being behind and its not paying off for them. Wasted money and the CEOs should be held accountable.


    The fact that Diess has to be on the hot seat for speaking truth is the exact thing wrong with the C-Suite in automotive. You can’t say anything true, you have to say what is “acceptable” or face harsh punishment. Every OEM everywhere is like this. What is funny, when you speak to those executives they always say “I wish people would tell me the truth”. Yet, when people tell the truth those very executives go on a mission to destroy their careers. It holds these OEMs back from making changes that are necessary as change only comes when they can no longer ignore the future and the company crashes into the rocks and change becomes mandatory and hurried. The people that the union wants to “protect” will be gone eventually; that is just time. I understand that they don’t like that but it is best to plan accordingly for the future that is inevitably happening.

    Don’t know which of you drafts copy for ALD, but next time why not spare us the snide remarks. Could it be Republicans won’t vote for it due to a principled position: that it shouldn’t be government’s role to pander to only one component of the auto industry (UAW), especially in light of ethical issues regarding all the financial support union leadership showers on only one political party: the Democrats? Once again, your writing reflects a left-leaning tilt. Why not just stick to accurately reporting the facts of automotive news, without expressing your political bias. Thanks for considering this.
