MAGNETI MARELLI
Hello, I’m John McElroy, welcome to Autoline China, the show that covers some of the most important new technologies in the automotive industry.
HELLA’S NEW LIGHTING SOLUTIONS
The supplier company Hella is showing how projection headlamps could help keep bike riders safe, and it’s also coming up with other new ideas for lighting systems. For example, the headlights could project bars of light on the ground to indicate you’re travelling too close to the car in front of you, or they could show the ideal road to take. This could be helpful at night, in rain or in snow. Not all ideas have to do with lighting something up. Turning off a portion of the light creates a dark line in the light beam that can point something out to the driver, like a person standing on the side of the road.
HARMAN SHOWS OFF AUTO TECHNOLOGY
Samsung has been making a big push to get into the automotive industry, which analysts say is a way to lessen its reliance on the smartphone business. Last year it purchased Harman International, and now we’re starting to see what the two are coming up with. The Digital Cockpit is a single software and hardware solution that sees the infotainment and cluster combined into one display. There’s also a premium package that can power up to 4 display screens, including automotive-grade QLED or Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diode displays. Here’s something pretty cool: Augmented Reality navigation. It gets rid of the traditional map and replaces it with real pictures and video, which then has the navigation route laid overtop of it. In autonomous mode, passengers could take advantage of a large QLED Moodroof that plays relaxing sounds and video. And shape-shifting speakers would be perfect for ride-sharing applications. The cone of the speaker changes depth and that changes the sound, depending on the kind of music you want to listen to.
MAGNETI MARELLI INTEGRATES AUTONOMOUS SENSORS
Autonomous cars are still in their early stages of development. And they look it. A lot of them still have weird protrusions sticking out of the body for the sensors, with the trunks typically jammed full of computers and wires. But Magneti Marelli has ideas on how to integrate it all so it’s not visible. With their system, long range radar gets mounted high on the front grille, while short range radars are mounted down low with the fog lamps. Video cameras and LIDAR are integrated into the headlight housings. At the rear, radar, video cameras and LIDAR are integrated into the taillight housings. It’s a clever idea and suggests that all the technology for autonomous cars will ultimately be integrated in ways that we won’t even notice.
ROCHLING CREATES WASHER SYSTEM FOR SENSORS
But while radar, Lidar and video cameras are critical components for autonomous cars, what if they get covered with dirt, snow or even rain? Then they’re useless. So the supplier company Rochling has come up with a solution, called the Advanced Active Cleaning System. It uses up to 9 washer nozzles that spray a cleaning fluid to wash the lens of a sensor. It uses electronics to automatically determine which lens needs cleaning and regulates how much fluid is sprayed on each part. That makes sure the tank lasts as long as possible. It is a large reservoir, and it’s heated to prevent the fluid from freezing. It will also warn you when it’s getting low.
Coming up next, I’ll share my thoughts on how autonomy is going to impact car design and engineering.
AUTONOMY WILL CHANGE CAR DESIGN
When fully autonomous cars finally hit the road, you’re going to be able to do whatever you want in your car. And that is going to change how cars get designed and engineered. In an autonomous world, performance will not be very important. Passengers will not care how fast a car can accelerate, or how fast it can go through turns. Instead, comfort and convenience will be the most important factors. Something as simple as how easy it is to get in and out of a vehicle could turn out to be a competitive advantage. The interiors of vehicles will have to be designed so they can be quickly reconfigured for different uses. Other technologies like batteries, hybrids and fuel cells only change the way a car moves. But with autonomous technology we’re going to see changes in the way that cars get used.
But that wraps up today’s report, thank you for watching Autoline China.
