Hello, I’m John McElroy, welcome to Autoline China, the show that covers some of the most important new technologies in the automotive industry.
DIGITAL COCKPIT FOR BUSES
Digital displays in passenger vehicles are nothing new but now they’re making their way to buses, thanks to the supplier company Continental. It just created a digital cockpit that features a big 31-centimeter screen as its central display. It’s a modular unit, which means bus makers can adapt the system to their vehicles. The first units are already being shipped to bus company’s and serial production kicks off next year. Continental also says its digital cockpit is attracting interest from manufacturers of municipal vehicles, agriculture machinery and construction vehicles.
ROECHLING DEVELOPS ACTIVE AIR BLINDS
Active grille shutters are showing up on all kinds of new vehicles. Closing off the radiator opening when it’s not needed can dramatically improve the aerodynamics of a car, which boosts fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. But there can be a lot of leakage around the shutters, so the supplier company Roechling is working on a better design. They call it the active air blinds, not shutters. and it provides an 80% improvement in air blockage and an 80 percent improvement in packaging efficiency over its current design. Amazingly, the new design is only 16 millmeters deep, which allows it to fit into the tight front end of cars that previously could not accommodate active grille shutters.
Still to come…Ford is using drones to help with inspections at its manufacturing plants.
FORD USES DRONES TO INSPECT HIGH PLACES
It’s not uncommon to hear the buzz of a drone almost anywhere you go and now they’re making their way into manufacturing plants. Ford is using drones mounted with cameras at its plant in Cologne, Germany to inspect high places, like pipe work and roof areas. The drones are about 10-times faster, inspecting each area in 12-minutes and the entire plant in just one day. That means the facility doesn’t have to be shut down and Ford is risking employee injury less not working up so high as often.
PISTON COATINGS IMPROVE EFFICIENCY
The diesel is still the engine of choice in the commercial vehicle segment and suppliers like MAHLE continue to make diesels more efficient. It just came out with a new kind of piston coating that reduces the heat absorbed by the pistons. This reduces the demand for piston cooling, which allows for higher exhaust gas temperatures and enables the waste heat recovery system to extract more power. The coatings also heat up the exhaust gas after treatment system faster after a cold start. That reduces nitrous oxide emissions and makes it easier for automakers to meet current and future regulations. Not bad for something that simply coats the pistons.
Coming up next…General Motors and Honda recently stunned the automotive industry and coming up next we’ll tell you why.
GENERAL MOTORS AND HONDA PARTNER ON AUTONOMY
General Motors and Honda dropped a bombshell on the auto industry when they announced they’ll work together developing autonomous cars. But it goes beyond collaboration. Honda will invest $750 million in GM’s subsidiary Cruise, and spend another $2 billion to develop those cars.
It’s fascinating to see GM get outside investors to kick in big money on its research and development efforts. In addition to Honda, a Japanese conglomerate kicked in $2.2 billion to GM Cruise.
Automakers are struggling to invest in electric cars, autonomous cars and mobility services at the same time they invest in their existing lineup of cars and trucks. GM is paving a new way to pay for all this by getting money from inventors and a competitor.
And with that we wrap up this edition of Autoline China, thanks for watching and please join us again next time.
