Hooray, we’re through another week. Welcome to the Friday edition of Autoline Daily, I’m John McElroy and here’s the news.

Last night Lincoln opened up its new design center to members of the media. The whole idea is to convince the world that the Ford Motor Company is serious about rebuilding the Lincoln brand, and the company trotted out some of its top level execs to show how important this is to them. Interestingly, the Design Center is the first design studio dedicated to Lincoln since the 1970’s. It will house the design of all Lincolns models, including both interior and exterior design. It also houses the color and materials people as well as the engineering design staff. Ford knows it’s going to take years and a lot of money to pull this off, but the Design Center certainly represents an important first step.

Last month, Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby took a leave of absence after suffering a stroke. Now they’re dumping him altogether. Volvo just appointed current board member, Hakan Samuelsson, as its new President and CEO effective immediately. Volvo says it did not like its lack of progress in China, and that’s why Jacoby was sacked.

Nissan just introduced its all new Sentra and here’s a good overview of what the car’s about.

This seventh generation Sentra is gets better fuel economy thanks to an all-new 1.8l, 4-cylinder engine, a CVT and three different drive modes. But even with all the upgrades in the car, Nissan knows it’s a challenge to get the word out.

Nissan tells us that its dealer body is very excited to finally have what they feel is a great one-two punch with Sentra as well as the new Altima to go up against the other compact–midsize competition. If you want to check them out for yourself both are in dealerships now.

But even with all those improvements, Nissan still has a battle royale on its hands with Toyota. And now we’ve learned that the Prius is the number one vehicle in California. Toyota sold over 46,000 Prius’s so far this year, accounting for a quarter of all Prius’s sold in the U.S. Toyota now has the Prius v, Prius c, and a plug-in version, which has also helped boost sales of the hybrid.

Hyundai teamed up with a company named Broadcom to install an ethernet system in its vehicles. The goal is not to allow the consumer to communicate faster it’s to make the vehicle communicate faster. The idea is to be able to integrate multiple systems of the vehicle into one network. This would allow a less complex electronic system, at the same time allowing greater electronic capabilities. Not to mention a whole lot less wiring which could mean a large reduction of weight. And we all know manufactures love that

Hey Formula 1 fans. No more F1 on Speed. NBC picked up the racing series for the next four years. Four of the races will be broadcast on NBC while the remaining 16 will be on NBC Sports Network.

    Although I will never buy one,the Kia Soul ‘rat’ commercials are just plain fun and show imagination and excellent execution,imho.I find it hard to believe that most don’t know the brand.

    I say Romney because unless the CAFE standards are eased, car and truck prices will have to go up significantly in order to comply, and if prices go up, that will have downward pressure on auto sales.

    I know who I’ll vote for in November, but know not enough, to vote for an ‘automotive’ president (nor should that be a major reason to pick one). Some contributory factors may be at play (i.e., other manufacturing, jobs, etc.) but feel the question moot as presented.

    I say Obama, because he’s not going to slap up the Chinese, killing our sales prospects. On the other hand, Ann Romney may be replacing her fleet of Cadillacs.

    I really think Ford is doing good things with Lincoln. However, I believe the naming of its cars should reflect the brand’s heritage. Imagine if Lexus dropped ES, LS, etc. It wouldn’t make sense.

    10 I can’t say I’m surprised that so many people don’t know from KIA. I’ve been frothing at the mouth in expectation of the Surface RT tablet from Microsoft. I almost ran into a wall when Google announced a new ARM based chromebook, yesterday. I’ve learned to settle down, an accept my oddness.

    (again, please don’ ask me about sports, especially tomorrow, when I’ll be glued to my computer screen to watch the Petit LeMans)

    I am surprised that you did not ask about the DC Comics special edition Kia models that they will be coming out with. I am still scratching my head on that one. The brand police at DC Comics must be fast asleep at their desks to approve this deal. Why would they want to work with any foreign car company to make special editions based on such American iconic characters as Batman or Superman? Maybe someone needs to tell them that Gotham City is NOT located in South Korea. I can see this one blowing up in their faces.

    I am going for Mitt. Obama complains that Mitt wanted to take Chrysler and GM to Bankruptcy, but what did he do? On top of that he stole hundreds of dealer businesses from good people and shared that wealth with his supporters. Those that want change and keep electing these snake oil people should have their head examined. When you keep doing the same thing, you get the same results.

If that guy comes in first we all agree on letting our last piece of automotive pride go the wayside, cause thats exactly what he’d have done! He (and I guess all of you) would be perfectly happy with Hyundai instead of Ford, and Honda instead of GM. Take it further Airbus instead of Boeing…BINGO! your OUT of the game! The people who voted for Romney to be the man for the auto industry are the same ones who will believe he has a GOOD job for them! Question; what job? One in a transplant at 73′ wages with no benefits!

    If Romney had been prez 4 years ago, GM and Chrysler would have died and been liquidated, with a loss of tens, or hundreds of thousands of jobs. The only chance the companies had for survival involved “bailouts,” as it were. No private funds would have been available to support a “traditional” bankruptcy.

    In the case of a country like Cuba, the govt run entity survives because there is no competitor, no matter how poorly it is run or how bad their product is. This explains why Soviet era cars were so crappy while their military equipment was as good as any.

    General Motors and/or Chrysler could not have been restructured BECAUSE THE CREDIT MARKET WAS FROZEN and there was no financing availabe. They would’ve been liquidated or sold, {gasp!} to some foreign corporations. Chinese, perhaps.

    Yes, Mittens said they should go through bankruptcy and, yes, Obama took them through bankruptcy, but they could not have gone through a Chapter 11 restructuring like Romney wanted BECAUSE THERE WAS NO CREDIT AVAILABLE TO THEM. The Federal Government acted as the lender of last resort and, as the party taking the biggest risk, had a seat at the head of the table to look after their “investors” best interests.

    I guarantee you that if Obama hadn’t done what he did, GM and Chrysler would’ve both gone down, Chapter 13 liquidation.

    The suppliers that depended on their business would’ve tanked. Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, et al, would have been left without the majority of their suppliers and their production lines would’ve ground to a halt overnight.

    Thousands of dealerships would’ve gone out of business and tens of thousands, if not millions would’ve been out of a job and the economy of this country would’ve gone straight off the cliff and into the abyss.

    And Obama would’ve been burned in effigy all over this country for “doing nothing” to save Detroit.

    If you despise the cost of the GM/Chrysler rescue to the U.S. Treasury, you haven’t a clue about how more expensive the alternative would’ve been in lost tax revenue, welfare, food stamps, unemployment, etc.

    Luckily, you can avoid the Cue infotainment stuff on the ATS.

    Unfortunately you can’t avoid it on the XTS, the car Cadillac offers as a replacement for the DTS, a car that had an average driver age of about 70.

    I was simply discussing the auto industry bailout. What led up to the financial crisis is probably not relvant, particularly on an automotive-centric website.

    I agree that it wasn’t a terrific idea to ask a political question on this site. Our politics are not what bring us here. It’s better we share our passion for the automobile and as little as possible about anything else.

    Yeah, Porsche and a few others gave us the Beetle under orders from the Fuhrer, and a few hundred, or thousand engineers gave us the Volt under direction of Lutz.

    Probably Nissan wants to keep Sentra styling more “conservative” than some of their other products, given the market segment. Aren’t about half of the world’s Sentras used as taxis in Mexico?

    Mexico is a mish-mash of taxis, from old style Beetles that were still being built there till a few yrs ago, to SUV’s, mini-vans and Town Cars, depending on where you visit

    There’s a Toyota Tundra from approx. 1:04 to 1:10; don’t know if it’s towing or not. (I could be wrong on the tow part). Apologies if speculated too much (but something was going on for those few seconds of video with a big “TUNDRA” commercializing what otherwise was a nice historical event).

    RE: Which President is best for the auto industry is one question that doesn’t really concerm me, a buyer.

    It should be followed by another question: What President is best for the suto buying public?

    In the past, the auto industry has faught everything from safety issues (GM faught air bags) to gas mileage requirements and many things inbetween, that have not benefited the buying public. So always supporting the industry is not always benefiting the buying public. (Look at the improvement in gas mileage these past few years. When forced, the auto indursty can accomplish mileage results we are all amazed at seeing. A President supporting only the auto industry would not have set future requirements as high as they are now.)

    The toughest critic or teacher is usually the one from whom I learned or accomplished the most.

    Licoln with a design studio, Last time they tried to save Mercury they came up with a California Studio just for them,a year later they had a new concept!! a MERCURY MARAUDER CONVERTBLE that was shorten 2 ft from the sedan.     It is politics and incompetence in both political parties that delivered the housing crises as they forced loans to those who could not afford them to be politically correct…this led to huge recession.

    And large changing EPA regs driven by the false claims of global warming and oil limitation have forced and will force large price increases in cars that hurt car sales.

    And our horrible energy policy that forces us to pay large gas prices and feed dictators that hate the USA with much cash. We have more oil in USA than Middle East! This has caused high gas prices that is killing our industry. The environmental left is selling the global warming hoax to control mankind and technology…all in the name of sustainability. The same wackos claimed in the 70′s that oil would run out by the year 2000! It is about control. Go watch the movie 2016 and you will learn the real Obama…he wants USA to be a “equal” nation among the world…not superior in any way. So financial wealth redistribution is the way. Europe socialism is collapsing many nations there. USA not far behind with $16 trillion in debt, $1 trillion plus in annual deficits, out-of-control spending, clueless federal reserve that is printing $$ we don’t have and making inflation go up constantly….and debt interest about to nail us. Entitlement spending is through the roof! Result is downfall of USA and that HURTS all of us and the AUTO INDUSTRY.
    Romney is not the savior but he will put the brakes on Marxist Obama ways and help re-ignite energy industry, lower gas prices, and repeal ObummerCare. Those 2 changes alone will help the auto industry. $2.00/gallon gas prices will GREATLY help pick-up, large sedan, and larger SUV sales. Those are the vehicles Americans love and want. But at $4.00/gallon gas and high inflation on food and other items Americans can no longer afford them.
