    Kit, from yesterday, re oil viscosity: maybe they want people to use the thin as water oil so there will be more engine damage and repairs and you know what that means? Another new car, most people don’t bother to replace an engine, very expensive.

    1, They don’t want engines to wear out too quickly, because that would be bad for the car company’s reputation, but they don’t want them to last forever either. As with oil change intervals, I bet the big companies have done many thousands of hours of dyno testing to determine how much difference oil viscosity makes in the life of engines. Like with the oil change interval data, it seems that they are very VERY secretive about it, as you won’t find any articles published by SAE, or anywhere else about it.

    #12 (G.A.Branigan). You can go even further than 5k on full synth. I typically go 7k between changes on my Lexus LS430 (as well as my 22 year old SC400) without issue.

    Heck, if you switch to Amsoil, you can go 10k to 25k (depending on the formula you choose) and just swap the filter out half-way through the cycle. Amsoil is used in package delivery fleet vehicles and city buses expressly to reduce the down-time associated with frequent oil-changes.

    I remember the original Aston Martin Lagonda. At that time it was a futuristic looking vehicle.
    I hope Andy Palmer goes down market like Mercedes and gives us an affordable Aston Martin, especially an AWD CUV.

    If Sergio Marchionni is looking to raise money, doesn’t Chrysler still own the “American Motors” brand name? American Motors that brought us the nameplates like Eagle, Hornet and Ambassador. Someone might be interest in buying the name like Magna or one of the other domestic or foreign Automotive OEMs and or suppliers. It might be worth converting it into cash to aid in fueling his five year plan.

    My first car was an ’86 AMC Renault Alliance (family car hand-me-down). As I recall, it actually won Motor Trend’s Car of The Year that year also. Because I distinctly remember a white on clear “Car Of The Year” window sticker in the rear window.

    Woefully under-designed front suspension, however. A year didn’t go by when both CV joints weren’t being replaced…

    9, ….and Citation, K cars, and the ultimate Vega, the 1975 Monza. It started with the Vega engine, but most had various small V8 and V6 engines.

    ahhh the old oil change debate. It seems we are often looking for the one right answer and maybe there isn’t one. How often to change and what to use I would think varies depending on use, climate and vehicle. That said I’m sure most people change their oil far more often than necessary, the law of diminishing returns would certainly come into effect here.

    Remembering the times: The Vega was mid ’70′s, no one was making that great of a car (all were scrambling for emissions), the Citation was early ’80′s , still crawling out of the non-fuel injected era, still scrambling for emissions/safety/fuel mileage. So, looking back, some of the alternatives might have made more sense (but isn’t that mostly hindsight). I had an ’80 Citation X-11 (four cylinder/four speed); admittedly not the best vehicle I’ve ever owned, however to it’s credit, pretty good handling (X-11 had something to do with that), pretty darn good gas mileage (broke 30′s on the highway; back in the 55 mph days) and man it had a lot of room for a smallest type car (and bonus, mine had the hatchback; liked that a lot).

    I had an ’81 Citation 2 door hatch, also 4 cylinder 4 speed. I didn’t have much trouble with it, but I didn’t have it long. Even for the time, those cars didn’t hold up very well. I haven’t seen an X car on the road for years, but I occasionally see an Omni or Horizon which ended production at about the same time, and they weren’t great cars. The Citation hatch was very utilitarian, though.

    My Skylark gave me decent service for a few years but when it would overheat at any time and the mechanics could only replace the switch that controlled the fan motor over and over and over again with the same results, it was time to say good-bye.

    Automotive News reports Cadillac has signed a lease to move to 330 Hudson Street in Manhattan. This area is near the West Village though the specific building is hard by the approaches to the Holland Tunnel. A cool location overall, though I wonder how management expects workers to commute. Go a couple blocks north or east and you hit happenin’ NY, especially for evening life. NYU is northwest a couple blocks. You don’t want to drive around here at rush hour. But if I recall, there’s a major advertising agency a block or two north of Caddy’s new digs. Pretty bold.

    I find it interesting that Cadillac would want to move to Manhattan, where there is absolutely no reason to even have a car. From seeing the NYT auto section, though, it looks like a lot of filthy rich Manhattanites have places in New Hampshire or upstate NY where they go for weekends in cars. They would spend more than most people’s income, just to park their cars in the city.

    VW and the UAW jamming a union down the workers throat in Tenn, is BS. if they wanted a union they would have voted in not OUT. In the long run it will not be a choice as the thugs will start to give non union workers problems and intimidation will rule. I don’t think the last UAW VW plant worked out to well or too long so we will see.

    27, The workers were fed quite a lot of misinformation by Corker and others before that last, close vote. While, as a salary employee with GM, I sometimes had issues with the UAW, it seems that there there is still a need for unions, as worker’s pay and benefits go downhill.

    Yes, I realize that things didn’t work out so well at the Westmoreland VW plant, partly, but far from entirely because of the UAW.

    For all the innovations and technology Chaparral used it didn’t translate into many wins. They seemed to be 1st in using them ,but not winning with them. Wings, Ground effects and fans. They were always great looking cars though , well maybe not the 2J so much LOL.

    Love HtG’s insight on downtown New York. Being a lifetime “Midwesterner”, it is interesting to here about things like the type of haircut you need in certain areas ;-)

    I totally believe that Cadillac’s move will help the brand. Getting that “New York State of Mind” is exactly what it needs. I think that too much “Made in Detroit” is not good for a premium luxury brand. They need some “Attitude” LOL! :-)

    I’m not sure reviving the New Yorker can be done. They kinda ruined it after using a K-car and adding a padded top and a bit of bling to call it a New Yorker.

    If they do it right, it could work, but they got no platform to work with, I don’t think the current 300 platform would work, but you never know, look at Caddy turning the ATS into the CTS and they did it right.
