    I put Bridgestone Blizzacks on both my daily drivers and it made a huge difference last year. The cars always felt sure footed and only slipped when I really pushed them to. If you live where there is a lot of snow I’d recommend them to everyone. I have FWD and can only imagine that on AWD these things would be hard to beat.

    I recall some years ago when Ferrari was victim to the industrial espionage of McLaren and one of their own engineers. That led to a deca-million dollar fine as I recall. Sure hope the Mercedes engineer doesn’t rat out the prancing horse.

    So whatever happened to those smog-eating radiators (I think they were Volvo) that would help clean emissions from just driving around; maybe they were cost prohibited but that might produce better results than the incentives for ‘electrics’ that don’t sell (very well).

    Interesting that China has tax incentives to increase car sales. Has anyone seen the reports from Bejing and the smog levels? It’s crazy. I’m sure it’s America’s fault. We buy so much stuff from China that more people have jobs and can now afford things like electricity and also cars. Next year’s Green Summit should be held in Bejing.

    Also, I’m rather disappointed in Red Bull’s knee jerk reaction to the teams F1 fortunes. Racing is cyclic. Look at all the teams that dominated series only to fall into a rut. Guy’s it’s not all about engines. F1 is fortunate to allow innovation to thrive even under their tight rules, and other teams catch up or built a superior product. Vettel moves to Ferrari only to finish 3rd. The limited engine development the series enacted around six years ago benefited Renault/Red Bull for four straight championships.

    The Millennial study is interesting, but when you think about it, the results are pretty logical. A lot has changed in 30 years. Not only are there more choices in transportation available to them, but the cost of driving/owning a car is much higher than it was 30 years ago, even adjusted for inflation. And there are many more expensive things the average Millennial considers “must have” items these days. Thirty years ago, no one was spending $750 on a smartphone or $500 on a good laptop. Ditto for iPods, tablets and video game consoles. Combine that with the longstanding population shift from rural to more expensive urban areas where more mass transit options are available and its not too surprising that they don’t find a need to own a vehicle or a driver’s license and choose to spend their money on other things.

    Hey Chuck, glad I am not the only one that remembers those Volvo smog-eating radiators! You would think that Geely would own the rights to those since they now own Volvo, and would be using them as a marketing tool to sell more Volvos and Geelys in China. As I recall, it was a special coating applied to the radiator fins. I don’t recall a cost, but also don’t recall anyone saying they were real expensive either. Perhaps the Chinese people just don’t think they can make a difference as they drive through the thick blanket of smog in several of their largest cities.

    People are moving to larger cities and like the downtown area’s best. There is no place to park and to expensive if you find some where to park. They rent a car whenever they need one.

    To clarify, it is the marketing partnership between Infiniti and Red Bull that has ended. Red Bull IS using the Renault/Infiniti engine in 2016, its branding rights have been purchased by TAG Heuer.

    China needs to replace their coal fired power plants with wind, solar, and nuclear, rather than giving tax breaks on cars. The power plants are probably mostly responsible for the smog.

    7 Exactly. The U.S. population is becoming increasingly urban, and cars and big cities don’t mix well, especially the largest cities which have decent public transport available.

    1 Winter tires were invented for RWD cars, like my first car, a 1957 Chrysler. When FWD came along, with the ~60-40 weight distribution, there was less need for them. Of course, any car will both go, and stop better with winter tires.

    I remember in college meeting kids from NYC who didn’t have licenses. Unicorns, I tell you. I was burning to learn how to drive, at least a guy that grew up in the Village had an excuse(dude did a 360 driving home in the family wagon one year. Smartest guy ever, he missed everything)

    I don’t remember the smog eating radiators, but I thought I heard somewhere that as efficient as the emissions controls are on modern vehicles, driving them in high-smog areas did have a net reduction of pollution (less pollutants in the exhaust than the air intake). Can anyone verify that?

    I am not surprised that drivers fear winter ice and snow. I recall driving from the North to Florida in a winter storm one year and it took me an entire day just to get thru the state of Virginia. I had decent tire tread on an Audi with a Torsen center differential but I saw literally hundreds of cars strewn to my left and right that have skidded off I-95 as I continued my drive.

    My first 40 years of driving were spent in the great white north. My first car came with winter tires, called snow tires at the time. Those were the only winter tires I ever had. My first cars were RWD, and later ones FWD. No AWD. Driving on ice and snow is generally not fun, but if you starting driving on snow and ice as a teen, you seem to get good at it. I had a few minor scares, but never crashed, and only went off the pavement and got stuck once in 40 years.

    I suspect a very experienced driver who never experienced the “slick stuff” until they are 60 years old, might not handle it so well.

    So Chinese buyers are buying SUVs ,because they think the air in them is cleaner? Even despite the fact that the vehicle will use more fuel and increase the pollution levels? Well now that’s a special kind of stupid.

    17 Whatever the vehicle, they need really good, and complex cabin air filters to remove all of the pollutants from the air. There may still be a lot of blue smoke from 2-stroke mopeds.

    #16. You’re definitely onto something there.

    Bottom line, if you’ve grown up driving on ice and snow, then you are so accustom to it, that it becomes second nature. Not saying there is therefore no ‘need’ for snow tires, but the need certainly is far less for that guy than for the poor fella who’s just been introduced to driving on slick roads.

    Actually, they shouldn’t need complex filtration. Just filters that meet MERV 17 (or greater) requirements.

    The MERV 17 filter would take out the particles and very fine droplets, but not the ozone, NO2, etc. It would help a lot, though, in highly polluted areas.

    2 Winter tyres -most reviews say winter/snow tyres are better than just assuming AWD will save you no matter what the weather.
    3 US buyers are buying millions of new trucks with only slightly better MPG due to low fuel prices. How is that much different from the Chinese limited view of the future. We all thought lead in fuel was a good idea at the time
    4 Kids have higher college fees, urban car usage is way harder with so much traffic and many older used cars had very poor MPG and safety features. Also is there not enough cars on the road as it is?
