    It seems that car companies replace platforms more often than they need to. Chrysler’s big rear drivers are still competitive, especially for their price, with a 20-some year old platform.

    Once the platforms are changed/modified to allow the finished vehicles to be sold in most of the world, the need to replace would not be needed unless some new major technology/safety invention forced a new platform to be designed.

    Honestly I think autoshows in general are in jeopardy. The technology is changing much more rapidly and the internet is making distribution of that technology new models more readily available. Folks from the Detroit area dont need to wait until January each year to see whats new. A simple google search and they can find more information and videos than any autoshow would provide. As many people on this site mentioned before the amount of concept cars and hype also has declined in recent years. Times are a changing.. IMO

    So the Ram hybrid system is basically a start stop system? Doesnt sound like it offers any assistance to acceleration or MPG while driving. Just instead of using the starter they have a much smoother restart using a belt driven 48V starter. Is the additional weight and cost of an additional starter and battery justified by the fuel savings which I would assume is only city MPG?

    Engines produce their highest levels of emissions during start up. Do these start-stop engines require new EPA regulations?
    Does the 48V system also provide any assistance in preheating the converters?

    I presume you’re referring to the An-124 Ruslan at the 5 min mark. It’s similar to our C-5 Galaxy. Your photo is of the much larger An-225 Mriya of which only one was ever built to carry the Soviet Shuttle Buran.

    #5. Lambo, cold starts are where high emissions come from. It takes the catalytic converter a couple of minutes to “light off.” But once it’s hot, emissions don’t spike with stop/start. most stop/start systems don’t operate until the cat has hit its operating temperature.

    5, 7 Even a Prius, at least the gen 3, runs the gas engine a couple minutes at cold start, to warm up the cat. It seems to do this “no matter what,” even if you only go a short distance at 5 mph in a parking lot, which it could do on battery only.

    @Lambo – From FCA about its 48 volt system, called eTorque, in the RAM: “eTorque adds up to 90 lb.-ft. of torque to the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and up to 130 lb.-ft. to the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8″

    #9 Thanks Sean! I did hear him say that during the interview he just seem to gloss over that as an advantage. Any information on how that extra torque will be applied? Is it made available only under a hard acceleration? Only available from a stop? Available all the time? Battery capacity has to limit it to some extent which was not mentioned.

    Not sure why they didnt just use the same system on both engines providing the 130 Lb-ft to the 3.6L. I dont think anyone would complain about an extra 40 lbs of TQ.

    Electric motors have maximum torque at zero rpm, so I would expect the extra zip to be mainly at low speed, just off idle of the gas engine.

    I’m curious about the mpg of the mild hybrid Rams. It seems like quite a bit of extra complexity, unless it beats the other non-diesel trucks by a couple mpg in the city. We shall see. I haven’t been able to find EPA ratings yet. At least they aren’t on fueleconomy.gov yet.

    Kit: The current rear drive Chrysler platform is from 2005, making it 14 years old. The 300M from 1999 was front drive.

    Its possible that 48v does not boost mpg but rather cut emissions in the cold-warm start up phase where the catalytic filter cannot offer the cleaning needed. I am not aware that alternators generate big parasitic drags, since they have been refined for decades. Maybe larger batteries being fitted to cope with extra power demand from in-car touchscreen and safety sensors and alternators are struggling to deliver?

    The Paris motor show has recently focused on low/zero emission car launches. VW inc probably feels that it needs to launch its new EV Golf/Audi Etron alternatives at Frankfurt where Germans can see that VW is making up for the dieselgate scandal. Ford has no EV not even rumors and Ford sales in the EU are weak even as demand is rising. China is also crucial to show EVs, where demand will soon skyrocket, so why not Beijing vs Paris.

    #12. I thought the current rear drive Chrysler platform was a variation of the previous gen Mercedes E class platform. That would make it 8 – 10 years older.
