    I looked at the link for the 8 series and even the PDF with the details given in that link, and there was no mention if this is based on the 7 or, like the 6 series, on the 5 series platform. If based on the 7, it is easier to justify the price and it is not a total RIPOFF like all these luxury vehicles based on a smaller model’s platform and selling for even more than the larger models.

    There is a lot to say about survival of a company, and with the depressed sales of motorcycles (not just H/D), shouldn’t a company be allowed to explore different avenues to weather the storm. It is not like something like this hasn’t happened before and for those that remember the AMF takeover that saved the company to fight another day. Granted the AMF bikes were not up to snuff but when you are drowning you don’t turn down a helping hand. This time, it seems, Harley Davidson is being somewhat proactive in their continued business model. And I do acknowledge that AMF almost killed the company until the employees bought the company themselves but they (AMF) were a lift boat in the early years of that acquisition.

    3, etc. Between my getting older, drivers getting more distracted, vehicles getting bigger, and soon, autonomous vehicles on the road using operating systems that crash regularly, I have probably bought my last motorcycle. For most of the reasons above, except my age, fewer young people are riding. Harley needs to go where the market is, like Marlboro started marketing heavily in Asia as smoking decreased in the US.

    As far as Harley in the US, they may need to go in a different direction to sell bikes to the younger riders, but it’s hard to compete with the great, high tech machines available from other manufacturers.

    At first, I thought the 8 series gran coupe would be a hatchback like the 4 series gran coupe, and would be intended to compete with Porsche Panamera. Reading the linked article, though, it looks like it is a sedan. It sounds kind of pricey to me, but it will probably depreciate nicely, for those who might want one in a few years.

    If this helps Harley survive great. As long as they don’t stop building bikes for the US here. Once that happens they will have walked off the plank. Millenials don’t really seem to care about much except the next smart phone. They don’t even want cars so bikes is pretty much a lost cause. Much of the powersports industry is seriously hurting. Is also blamed for the slumping attendance at motorsports events. It just isn’t their thing.

    6 I think the idea for this ’4 door coupe’ was to have no direct competitor from either Merc or Audi-Porsche.

    It is much larger than a 5 series but a bit smaller than a 7.

    If it is as rare as the 850 coupe, I expect it to depreciate much LESS than the much more numerous regular sedans. This is true of M-B coupes too.

    PS so does anybody know if it is based on the 7 platform?

    4 no idea. These are smaller than golf carts but have different styling (small real cars with roofs and sides)

    In addition to “baby boomers” not buying new Harleys, in the US, the company has to compete with the many like-new used Harleys being sold by older people who are giving up riding.

    Harley marketeers in the US should check out the Can-Am Spyder. I know a couple Harley riders who no longer feel comfortable with an 800+ pound two wheeler, but who bought a Spyder as a replacement. Harley should be able to compete well in this market, if they had a good product that was price competitive.

    8 The “8 coupe” has a 2 inch longer wheelbase than a 5 series, but 7 inches shorter than a 7 series. The overall length is about midway between a 5 and a 7. It’s probably a trade secret what it is really based on.

    11 In the case of the 6 they always said it was built on the 5 platform. I think they have to disclose that (in germany they even had to disclose the HP and Rolls Royce, who played coy in other markets pre-BMW, and said “adequate” (barely!), in Germany they had to cough up both the HP and the torque.

    11 The Grand COupe 8 is over 200″ Long, which puts it almost exactly as long as the regular length 7 series and more than half a foot longer than the 5. It is even wider than the 7, at 76″, but less tall, at 55+ “.

    13 The 7 series I was referring to in #11 is the long one, which is the only one they now sell in the US.

    It looks like BMW wants the 4 door “coupe” to be the “bargain” of 8 series. The 2 door is sold only with the V8 and AWD, with a base price of ~$112K.

    14 The V8 has 523 HP, a vastly better performer than the bargain 350 or so HP 6 (when even the previous LS460 had close to 400 HP and the Hybrid, more than 420 HP combined). DOn’t know why they did not offer the 2 door with the 6, if it was much more affordable it would sell much more than the 8.

    3 HD could help the bottom line at least for the dealerships if they abolished the snobby policy of only servicing HD bikes. Recently picked up a nail on my Honda and was willing to remove the wheel myself and pay HD for a tire and service to mount and balance it, because they are closer to me than the Honda dealership. I was told unless its a HD they wont touch it. So with that attitude when they struggle I don’t really care.

    The people I know bought the Spyder over the HD trike partly because of price, but one of them just liked the way the Can-Am drove better. For performance and handling, two front wheels seems to be better, but a Harley style trike is certainly more traditional.

    Is that just your dealer or H/D policy (I would think some Harley dealers would perform outside/generic work but I could be wrong). In any case that is a sad state of affairs.

    Most trikes were adaptations of a standard motorcycle frame and adding two wheels to the rear (I know you know this, just reiterating). The two front-wheeled trikes are inherently more stable than the old-school trikes and thus I think that is how they made in-roads.

    19 Its actually HD company policy. The service manager at the dealership I called is a friend of mine. He said he would like to help me out but the companies policy is HD only. I suppose they stay busy enough fixing HD bikes.
