  1. G.A.Branigan Says:

No matter how ‘green’ ev’s may be,all vehicles start with a load of ore, from a mine somewhere.Add in the transport of the ore,the refining process etc.It ain’t so green anymore.Once again,no free lunch.

  2. Chuck Grenci Says:

John, great responses on all the EV versus ICE comparisons. Also, did they ever open back up that rare earth metals mining that was in California (lithium included); wonder what CARB has to say about that (mining).

  3. Wim van Acker Says:

Truck crashed into autonomous shuttle: “It wasn’t the shuttle’s fault and the driver was cited.” Why would we start doubting autonomous vehicles because a truck driver crashes into an autonomous vehicle??? I would draw the opposite conclusion.

  4. Chuck Grenci Says:

#3, Wim, what has to be evaluated is whether a human driver of the vehicle that was crashed into would have also crashed or could have avoided the crash; not so simple to just declare it wasn’t the autonomy vehicles non-fault. I don’t know the particulars but it still leaves a black-eye on the bus’ performance (at least in the public’s eye).

  5. Wim van Acker Says:

@4: check the image of the accident. And: do we expect that autonomous vehicles are always able to escape from any bad human driver?

  6. Chuck Grenci Says:

That wasn’t my point and I wasn’t trying to cast any dispersions; what I was trying to say is that the accident needs to be investigated and evaluated or there was no reason to not put the bus back into service immediately. Cooler heads prevailed and the operation is being reviewed before another try.

  7. Dave Thompson Says:

the autonomous bus accident reminds me of Buckminster Fuller’s car the Dymaxion that was in an accident near the beginning and got a PR black eye

  9. Lambo2015 Says:

That jeep wrangler dash looks to be full of electronic gadgetry. I wonder how waterproof that stuff is, as you know someone will install a snorkel kit and drive their jeep through a stream.
I also wonder if that is the standard dash or if there is a base model that is more for the people that plan to actually go off-road and get dirty with the doors off.

  10. Bob Wilson Says:

Did the Las Vegas shuttle blow its horn? Was it unable to back up? Did it flip the bird?

  11. BobD Says:

On John’s comments that charbroiling meat in urban areas is now the largest source of particulates, does that mean CARB will start issuing “green credits” for us salad eaters out there?

  12. Michael T. Says:

    Hello John,

I am Sorry You do NOT Believe that Elon Musk Will Add the Solar and Wind Farm to The Giga-Factory. And On The diesel Engine Front … Elon has already been Converting over the Super Chargers to His NEW Power Packs and Solar around the World (removing the diesel Engines and going Green). Please remember that When the First Super Chargers (2012) where Installed Tesla Did NOT yet Offer a Power Wall Solution as they do NOW. See the Following Article “https://cleantechnica.com/2017/06/10/elon-musk-says-tesla-supercharger-locations-will-use-solar-power-soon-elontweets/”
Also Please See this Article Showing that Some of the Updated Super Charger Station where the Only Place with Power (IE Charging EVs) during a Black out see the Link below :

So As You can Clearly See Elon is doing what He Said He Would once Again … oh ye of little faith… Changes are a comin’

    Michael T.

  13. Micahel T. Says:

    Hello John,

Here is my second post … Please NOTE the Solar and The Wind Farm have been part of the Gigafactory Plans from day one. Please see the Release Picture when the Building was First Started.

Nothing happens over night … But Elon is Moving faster than any of the ICE car Companies ..Lets Just Hope He can Keep up the pace … and change the world …. He has Done a lot already …

  14. Terry Says:

It is obvious that very few people who comment on EVs read both sides of the argument. The only read what they want to hear.

  15. John McElroy Says:

#7. Buckminster Fuller is one of my heros. I got to hear him speak at Dow Chemical (they were a big backer of him) in the mid-1970′s and was entranced. I always thought his Dymaxion car got a raw deal

But two years ago at the St. John’s Concours I ran into the guys from the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville who built a replica Dymaxion from blueprints, photos and drawings. I asked them what it was like to drive it. They said it was dangerous as hell, and that you didn’t want to take it over 45 mph!

  16. MJB Says:

    Love the new Wrangler dash.

  17. MJB Says:

Unfortunately this crash will result in another black eye for autonomy because it is being touted as a technology and that’s good at AVOIDING accidents.

  18. Lambo2015 Says:

#15 Yea seems like they may have had in the program for the AV bus to stop when encountering an obstacle but probably didn’t go as far as to suggest reverse to avoid being backed into. Don’t know the details so that’s a guess.

  19. RickW Says:

A “DSG” Transmission was mentioned during the Volkswagon Gulf topic.

Did I hear that correctly and if so what is a DSG Trans.????

  20. Kit Gerhart Says:

#17 DSG means “direct shift gearbox,” VW’s trade name for dual-clutch transmission.
