    I was going to call the Autonomous off-roader oxymoronic but I think I’ll go one more step and just call it fully moronic.

    With all these electric introductions (in Europe especially) do I predict much more government involvement dictating EV’s (with or without incentives; perhaps just edict of compliance).

    A. Dark mood in Frankfurt. So the Germans “are deeply worried they’re going to lose their preeminence in the global auto industry” to whom?? Genesis??? Who could it be? Could it be…. TESLA?

    B. VW ID3 have not seen the video, is this built on the Golf, Polo, or the tiniest “Up!” body style??

    C. Honda’s little EV. I suspected so, see a few shows back, and even got the price over $30k. DOA.

    D. Hyundai concept. 45, 45, 45, and to be consistent, they will achieve a grand total of 45 units sold, badged as a Genesis of course.

    BMW and M-B maybe be following Tesla’s lead, and setting up shop in China. Almost half a X5 production from the SC plant goes to China, but with trade wars, that is likely to change. The Germans might just move more production to Mexico which, these days, seems to have a more stable business climate than the US.

    4 The ID3 is on a new EV-specific platform, which is rear drive.

    I saw the pics of that blue-green EV in the link, tried to guess at its dimensions, it seems to be between the Golf and the Polo, if I were to bet I’d say its closer to the Polo.

    The ID.3 looks cool and should sell well.

    Note, however, that the ranges are exaggerated – it appears VW only reported the city range, and highway ranges are much lower. See the autoexpress.co.uk review, where they report “a 77kWh battery. This allows the ID.3 to travel between 242 and 342 miles”. So true WLTP range is likely under 300 miles, with EPA range being another 10% or so lower than that.

    It may still be the first non-Tesla EV to have range competitive with the 2012 Model S.

    7 Re the price of the ID.3, the show translates the base price of the cheapest ID3 with the smallest battery, given in the link as 30,000 Euro, as $33,000, assuming an exchange rate at the current very low $1.1 per euro. Usually it is $1.20 a euro, which makes it $36,000.

    This is pretty close to the base model 3, which is a much bigger vehicle, and has better performance. In Europe, the ID3s small size may not be such a handicap, and if the $36,000 includes the hefty VAT tax (23-24% for most items), then it should sell.

    Wow todays show full of EVs and a hydrogen vehicle. Yet, still not interested. So VW is offering a warranty of 8 years and 100,000 miles on their battery. Does that mean it can be degraded to only get 20% of range and considered still useable? Or it needs to be completely dead and not take a charge to be covered? Would be interested in knowing what that warranty looks like. Even still in a day when ICE cars can easily get 200k miles and last 16 years (twice that of the battery) it seems the depreciation on an EV has to be high. At least around that 8 year mark.

    The ID.3 is ~168 inches long, about a foot longer than a current Polo, and about the same as a Golf.

    The base price of a Model 3 in Germany is listed as 43,390 Euro in Germany.

    Another interesting thing to consider with EVs, is I wonder if manufacturers will update the service batteries as technology changes. In the case of buying an 8 year old EV will their be a replacement battery available with 8 year old technology or will they provide replacement battery packs that have kept up with any improvements they make.

    If someone develops a battery that gets twice the range in say 5 years it would be nice to know you can get that in your older model or will it only be available in the cars made after that technology is released? I suspect OEs will only offer replacement batteries with the same old stuff it was sold with. Maybe aftermarket folks will make it available.

    10 Looked at the Tesla site in German, and the price should include the VAT. I would guess that the E 30,000 base price for the ID3 also includes the VAT.

    The Model 3 is far bigger than the Golf/ID3 at over 180″ long it is a foot longer, and possibly wider too.

    from the german tesla link, there is also an “Umweltbonus” or Environmental Bonus of 4,000 Euro listing the qualifications (I think they include cars that are under 60,000 Euros) to get it. Like a discount.

    12 The Model 3 is 2 inches wider, and 4 inches lower than the ID.3. The ID.3 has a big advantage, though, in being a hatchback. Yeah, I know, I repeat myself on that.

    10 The Polo did not look a foot shorter than the Golf, so I checked it and it is 160″ long, while the GOlf is less than 168″, or two-thirds of a foot longer.

    The Model 3 is 184.8″ long, or a foot and a half longer than the Golf. A far bigger vehicle, one or rather two sizes bigger. Also its width is 72.8″ while the GOlf’s is 70.8″ or 2″ or 5 cm narrower. Their heights are almost identical, 57″ vs 56.8″

    14 The hatch design may fly in Europe because of the constant need to parallel park the car downtown. Suburban owners who take mass transit downtown will still choose the Model 3.

    However, if the Bolt and the Leaf are any indications, the hatch design and the small size of the ID3 will be the kiss of death for the US and hopefully VW is aware of that and, like the Japanese, tries to sell in the US vehicles that the US consumers need and want.

    Visually, SUVs of different “sizes” do not look that different to me. For example every time I see a BMW X1, before I see the badge, I think it’s an X3. I was given a ride in a nice X3 this morning, and the interior looked compact to me, the X1 would not be much smaller inside either.

    15 Yep, I was seeing the dimensions of the Mk 5 Polo, which was ~156 inches long.

    CR shows the height of the Model 3 and Golf to be the same at 57 inches. Wikipedia shows the ID.3 as 61 inches tall. They could be wrong, but the article seemed to generally look pretty good.

Glad to see yesterday the last 4 missing crew members were recovered by cutting a hole in the ship. Thought I read that it was carrying Hyundai’s but didn’t give a count.

    17 The current X1 was downgraded to the Mini Countryman platform, while the X3 is still longitudinal engine. The X1 would have better packaging efficiency, but the X3 is a much better vehicle.

    Part of Nissan’s issue is the entirely ridiculous and ham fisted way Saikawa and his gang handled the entire Ghosn affair. Something that should have been handled discretely or administratively was turned into a full blown tabloid show that only served to damage Nissan’s reputation. It made it seem like the company was just in by crooks or back stabbers or status seekers…or a combination of all.

    Yesterday I caught the season’s premiere of Jeopardy and I mention it mostly for the car category they had, “Motor Trend Cars of the Year”. All three contestants, one female and two males, did terrible in that category. On the contrary, while I did not know the answers, when I read the clues they were all rather obvious.

    Contestants failed to guess the “pioneering” car who got it in 2004 (the Prius), the Ford who got it in 1958 or so (Thunderbird), the Corvette in 54, and others.

    When I am at home, I like to play along, and keep score. Before the final question, I was ahead with 36k, and the contestants had 29k, 7.5k and less than 1k respectively.

    None of us got the final Q (which was the name of.. Goliath’s town, a ridiculous question I bet not even 1 in a million people know), so I remained ahead. Of course it is far harder to play standing up, with floodlights on your eyes, and annoying producers to talk in your earpiece and tell you what to do, than comfortably sitting in your couch.

    24 It was Corvette in ’84, the first year of the C4. Yeah, the contestants weren’t very up on cars, and that was a crazy final question.

    Not only do the contestants have the lights and the rest to deal with, but they need to hit the button very quickly if more than one contestant knows the answer, which is often the case.

    Passenger volume of the Model 3 is 97 cubic feet. Passenger volume of the VW Golf is 93 cubic feet.
    Not very different in terms of actual, usable space. The sedan body style is not as space efficient as a hatchback, so I am not surprised that these two cars are so close in interior room.

    29 Mainly, the cargo space is much more accessible with a hatchback. My Camry hybrid no doubt has more passenger volume than the Prius it replaced, but the Prius was much better for carrying cargo. The Camry is quieter, quicker, and generally more comfortable, which is why I bought it.

    As far as Golf vs Model 3, the Golf is 17 inches shorter, and 2 inches narrower than the Model 3, so it does pretty well in packaging efficiency.

    32 It looks like the Defender 90 (102 actual wb) will compete with two door Wrangler, but at twice the price. The Defender will have a nicer interior, though.

    Sure, they got that “buzzer” and they are not allowed to answer early but only when Alex has finished reading each clue. I am against that, I think they should be allowed to answer immediately whenever they get it.

    39 The rental fleets can use these cheap EVs as daily rentals, most business trips when I rented a car I rarely did more than 50 miles with it on business, the rest was sightseeing etc.

    34 I actually surprised the 84 Vette won considering I believe it was like one of the lowest HP Vettes ever made. They were pumping out over 300 Hp on the base 350 and 370 HP with the LT1 until 1971 when it dropped to like 270 and kept dropping to 200 in 72, 190 in 73, 165 in 75. Then they started the climb back up in 77 but even by 1984 it was only 205hp and didn’t get back over 300hp til 1992 Not counting the ZR1s.
    The 350 didn’t get back to 350 HP till 2001 but when it went to 6.0L in 2005 (only engine available) and broke 400HP. So it must have won for the new design cause performance couldn’t have been it.

    42 The C4 would have won because it was a big advancement, chassis-wise over earlier Corvettes, and I have heard people say that it was the first ‘Vette to be much more than a factory built kit car.

    Of course, the Motor Trend car of the year winners is very checkered, with such winners as Vega, Mustang II, Volare/Aspen, Renault Alliance, and other less than stellar choices.

    43 Some of these choices were affected by advertising, or lack thereof, in the magazines who give the awards, esp in the past. This would explain the awards to the Genesis G 70 nobody is buying.

    Yesterday I saw my first C8 up close, in red, but did not look at it carefully, was driving by.

    as for the X3 I got two rides on yesterday, I hate to think how the interior of the X1 looks, if the X3 has a nicer one. This is not a luxury vehicle (the X3). Not even close. It is near-luxury and a bad one at that. There are acres of ill-fitting plastics that are not even good quality plastics, but hard rubbermaid plastics that look as if they are soft, but when you touch them they are not. I did not even notice the seats, if they were leather or not. The wood looks like an afterthought, a small square near the shifter and two long narrow pieces in the door handles.

    COmpared to my E, and also to my old 7, that X3 had a seriously inferior interior.

    My ex-wife had an Alliance when we met. It was a simple, honest little spud and was a fairly enjoyable econobox to drive. The rear suspension was fairly clever and the packaging was good.

    Shame it wasn’t a better built vehicle. It had no business being Car of the Year, IMO.

    46 A co-worker had one, and it had almost continuous problems with not running. Other than that, it was ok. It rode pretty well for a car its size, when it ran.
