Excellent having David Welch on again! Very much enjoy his perspective.
Pretty sure CVCC was the innovation Honda NEEDED in 1975 to make emissions without a converter, in 1975 forward.
The CVCC was also a VERY BIG help to bring HP and very good driveability for those times when, after 1974 emissions tightened a lot. Nissan added CC’s in 1974-5 just to make emissions (barely).
My step Mon had a 1975 CVCC Wagon that was a really great drive, AND efficient (30 mpg on highway, excellent for that time!).
