Extended range EVs solve a lot of issues for car buyers. No range anxiety. No charging anxiety. No problem towing or hauling heavy loads. But will consumers actually buy them? McKinsey interviewed 30,000 people to understand what they think. Patrick Hertzke, Partner at McKinsey, goes over the results.
The question I have seems impossible to find information about. How is the gas mileage when the battery is discharged? The only information available is for the no longer made i3 REx. I wish there’d been some information about gas mileage of newer EREVs in this report.
Interesting that ‘ability to fast-charge’ is seen as an advantage. I’d suggest that many of those respondents don’t have a good sense of the cost of DCFC, and specifically cost vs running the combustion extender.
Depending on the total weight of the vehicle (& therefore electric efficiency) and efficiency of the extender system (mpg on generator), fast charging may look less advantageous.
